It's always time to build.
Indeed, there's always shit coming round the corner.
While it's very difficult changing up CPUs and mobos because it's a pain the arse, upgrading other stuff is simple as and when you want to.
Haven't upgraded my mobo and CPU since 2011.

By Dark PhaZe Go To PostFirst thing that's made my eye twitch in a while in regards to possibly updating the PC:

Saw Durante hyping this over on ResetEra
Not sure if I'm getting this particular model, but 8k via foveated rendering, wireless, and 200 degree FOV is what I'm looking for in Oculus 2/Vive 2.
Hopefully this turns out great but I hear they are having problems getting 90hz refresh rate so I wouldn't recommend preordering it.

Yea, i'll wait for gen 2 of Vive/Rift. With foveated rendering we should actually be able to get better fidelity than what this thing is doing.
By Kibner Go To PostI think only a GPU upgrade would give you additional frames. You don't think an i7 with hyperthreading won't give more frames?
By Mantequilla Go To PostHi all, what would be a good upgrade from a i5-4570? I’m also rocking a 1070 and I mostly game at 1440p.i5 8400, new motherboard, and new ram or the 8700k if you wanna ball out.
By DominicanPower Go To PostYou don't think an i7 with hyperthreading won't give more frames? With a 1070 @ 1440p? Not at all. A 1080 would be a much, much better upgrade.
By DominicanPower Go To PostYea, I forgot about the res. Gonna need a 1080tiHe would need to upgrade his CPU if he wanted a steady like 100 fps. But since he was using a 1070 @ 1440p, that's not a big issue.
CPU mostly more important when maintaining very high fps on lower resolutions such as 1080p. Also very handy for emulating.
By Mantequilla Go To PostHi all, what would be a good upgrade from a i5-4570? I’m also rocking a 1070 and I mostly game at 1440p.You really wouldn't stand to gain much. Possibly better minimum frames rates, but your max frames won't change much since you're heavily GPU bound with a 1070 running modern games at 1440p.
A GPU upgrade would make a noticeable difference though.
Just to take it to a daft extreme, even a Pentium G4560 can match frame rates with an overclocked 7700K when paired with a 1080Ti, if you're playing games at 4K.

By NinjaFridge Go To PostI just want RAM prices to drop. The 8GB i bought last March is now more than twice the price I paid for it, nearly triple in fact. I don't need more RAM but I got that itch.
The set I bought back in July has gone up £20. 70 quid up to 90. Been meaning to sell it for about 80 for a small profit and to cover the cost of the 16Gb set I picked up a month ago (16Gb of 3000mhz for £120, was damn steal considering the current prices).
Haha, cool video HottestVapes. It's good that someone out there showed how those high-end CPUs aren't necessary for single-GPU, 60 fps gaming.

CPU's seem really misunderstood by most when it comes to gaming PCs. Especially lately with all the 4K hype.
Personally, I wish the 4K fad would die off already. I don't think I'll ever upgrade from 1080p, couldn't stomach seeing my FPS half itself for the sake of extra pixels.
Edit: Perfect example right here.
Guy thinks you need an expensive CPU to compete with the X1X in 1440p-4K gaming at 30FPS (####ING THIRTY EFF PEE ESS).
Guy proceeds to double down on said statement.
Guy then agrees that the GPU is more important but it'd be stupid to put a cheap CPU with an expensive GPU.
Like God damn, I'm surprised he hasn't drowned in his own irony because that's exactly what the X1X (and PS4Pro) are, shit CPU's paired with pretty good GPUs. Not bashing the consoles, like, just the absurdity of that guy's mental gymnastics.
By Kibner Go To PostIt's not a fad and is going to slowly become the standard like 1080p over 800*600.
Aye, eventually. I just feel it's being forced before it's time. The tech hasn't really caught up to running 4K games at a respectable frame rate for me, and even if that happens within the next year, it still won't be affordable.

I probably should have made this thread in gaming, but I wasn't thinking straight.
I'm trying to compile recommendations for a console style PC. If anyone here has any recommendations, I'd appreciate your advice in this thread:

Is upgrading simply a case of switching the components around, while leaving the OS on the HSS/SSD? Could do without having to do a fresh install of Windows.
Thinking of getting a new GPU, and stretching to a CPU if the current one can't keep up. Would like to be able to play PUBG without bushes looking like people from 50 metres. If I could play at 4k it'd be a bonus, at the moment I've got the GPU and OS running at 1080p since the PC can't handle gaming at 4k, and the games I play fuck up when I try setting them to 1080p while everything else is 4k

Yes. Some people go crazy with driver uninstalls and what not, but I never have and it works fine. Just plug that bad boy in.

Depends. Upgrading GPU, then no.
Upgrading from one Intel CPU to anther Intel CPU, probably not really needed.
Upgrading from Intel to AMD or vice versa, you really should but you don't have to.
My general rule of thumb is that if I have to change the motherboard, I should probably reinstall Windows.
By Laboured Go To PostDisIt suits you. Thinking of changing cases later this year, probably H400i or Evolv Shift.

The rival chip manufacturers have announced a partnership that will see Intel produce a chip that combines an Intel CPU with an AMD graphics chip. The resulting chip will take advantage of a new process that should allow Intel and AMD to bring more robust graphics power to lightweight notebooks.

A decent ITX motherboard for Ryzen. That could be what gets me to drop my current motherboard and case and downsize.
The Logitech G613, the wireless mechanical keyboard, regular price $149, is now on sale at Best Buy for $69.99 for black friday

Speaking of keyboards. I've just switched from a Blue Oetemu board to a MX Cherry Red board. I miss the clicky blue switches, but I love how quiet the new board is in comparison.

The Logitech keyboards actually use their own Romer-G switches. I really like them. I think they're similar in feel to the Cherry red switches on my Corsair mechanical keyboard.

It's a nice set up you've got there. Never ever heard a bad thing about Logitech gear. I went with a Steelseries Rival 310 mouse, and kinda wish I got a Logitech mouse instead. Could never go wireless though. Don't know why, I just like my wires.
I'm finding these red switches sort of, mushy. I think it's just the lack of click as I got really used to my old keyboard. A nice solid click when you press a key down just feels right to me.

The G900 was the break through on wireless mice tech. In testing it had the same performance as wired mice, and it can become wired as well (for charging or if you just want to make it wired).

Ah
It's routinely on sale here in the states, it's $74.99 right now for example.
If you want a solid and affordable wired mouse, take a look at Zowie. They have a bunch of different models, but they are all just different sized and styled shells using the same sensor.
I'll probably stick with the Rival 310 till it breaks, but if I do go for a new mouse it'll likely be this
It's beautiful.
It's beautiful.
Only thing I do miss on the G613, is the backlighting. The Logitech 810 was RGB, but I'd often set it on low white at night. Not having it at all here is an adjustment, but I understand why they left it out (battery purposes).

I'm getting a popping noise through my speakers but it seems to only happen in Chrome. Can't replicate it in other browsers and I didn't notice it in Wolfenstein 2 or when I listened to some music I have saved on my external HDD.
By DominicanPower Go To PostThe keyboard that I have is RGB.
I looked it up last night. Few different models, but I'm guessing your has blue switches? Noise aside, I think blue switches are genuinely great. The feedback from the click just feels right.
