By Smokey Go To PostIt's about that time to move on from a 2600k, tbh.I'd say it kinda depends on what your reasoning for an upgrade is in the first place.
Want to play at 144FPS or more? Then drop the 2600K.
Want to play at 1440p or higher? May as well stick with it.
Want to take advantage of newer technology that you can't get on 2600K compatible motherboards? Then upgrade that ish.
2500K on the otherhand, that's had it's day now. Needs to be taken round back of the shed and put down.
This video from Hardware Canucks claims that it still isn't the time to upgrade your 2600k.

It's really impressive what Intel accomplished with Sandy Bridge. It is lasting as much as a console by now, but going through two different generations.

It is equally disgusting how little progress has been made by them since then, though. At least until AMD got their shit together enough to push them again.
Sure 2600k is still "ok", but really, if you are a moderate to high usage pc gamer, it's about that time. Especially with Coffee Lake and it's gains. But I suppose if you're at 1080p or below, yes it'll still be fine.
By Kibner Go To PostI think only a GPU upgrade would give you additional frames.
Yeah I was guessing that’d be the case.
I’m avg’ing 60 frames on newer games, 1070 is still a pretty hardy card. 16 gb ram seems to help as well (Gsync monitor is a must too)
Guess I’ll wait till next year to upgrade both in one go.
By FreezerGeezer Go To PostI think my PC is finally starting to inch towards death. The majority of the build is quite old, the CPU is a 2600K and the rest except the GPU is from the same time. The GPU is a 970.New GPU's from Nvidia aren't suppose to drop till at least spring from what I've heard.
Has there been much talk of new GPUs on the horizon?
By Zabojnik Go To PostSince it doesn't look like you're ready to fully upgrade, nor do you really need to with those specs (4790k is very much still a capable processor for gaming), I'd say 1080 GTX is your best bet, if you can get it for decent money. If you can find a used one for 100€/£ less somewhere, even better. [...]
By Laboured Go To PostYeah I was going to say 1070/1080. If you want 4K/60 as well then you can only really go for 1080ti.
By Kibner Go To PostAs for the guy looking to have a computer that does 1080p/60fps for three years, the 1080 is probably what you want. I'm not sure how the 1070ti stacks up to it, but the 1080 or 1080ti are probably going to be necessary.
I wouldn't bother about upgrading from that CPU for a while, yet. It won't really result in fps increases for you.
As for 4k gaming, well, nothing is really ready to do that at 60fps right now. IIRC, an SLI setup of 1080ti's does respectable but still not ideal. And also way, way, way out of your budget.
By Smokey Go To PostThis needs to be clarified. You can get 60fps at 4k now, HOWEVER, in most cases you'll probably have to dial back a few settings. If you are willing to do that, a 1080Ti is perfectly fine at 4k.Thanks all, much appreciated! 4K was definitely more a "nice to have" than an essential, I'm perfectly happy playing at 1080p at the moment, and by the time I'm ready to invest in a 4K monitor and capable GPU, they'll likely both be more reasonably priced.
I was leaning towards a 1080 but wasn't sure whether it was best to buy now or wait for Nvidia's next card (1180?) since the 1080 isn't "brand new" right now. I'll definitely hold off a few days at least to see how the 1070Ti stacks up benchmark and price wise, and then likely decide on a next card from there. Maybe the release of the 1070Ti will drop the price of the 1080s a bit as well.
It may or may not be a wise idea to wait for Black Friday sales. I'm sure some other posters would be able to tell you if those video cards can typically be found during that sale or on the following Cyber Monday.
I think it depends on how fast of a frame rate you rant if you want to upgrade your cpu/gpu. I have a home theater pc hooked up to my 4k tv, and it is powerful enough to run games at 60fps for nearly everything at 1080p, many times at 1440p, and once in awhile 1800p (customer resolution I added). If you are going to game on your 4k tv sitting 8 feet away, you can pick a lower resolution than 4k (ie 1440p) and have the nvidia gpu scale the image to 4k. The picture is slightly more soft than native 4k but honestly it's not that big of a difference. Hitting native 4k is tough. HardOCP recently produced an article showcasing a playable 4k frame rates for Vega 64, 1080, and 1080ti here:
https://www.hardocp.com/article/2017/10/09/amd_radeon_rx_vega_64_4k_video_card_review/1
It's pretty revealing. The only card that can consistently hit around 60fps and over at 4k is the 1080TI and many times it's only at medium settings. Native 4k 60fps + is still a workout for current gpus.
Back to the cpu and gpu I'd look at your target frame rate to decide what to do. If you are gaming at 1080p or 1440p at 60fps a 2600k and beyond is fine with a 1070 class or better gpu. If you want to run at 120fps plus that is where you really need an 8600k/8700k and 1080 or 1080 ti.

I'm just throwing it out there, but my Ryzen 1600 at 3.9Ghz has been putting in work and maintaining 144hz for R6 Siege.

I had a look at last year's deals and UK wise it seemed to be £20 off high end cards, so I think I'll see what the 1070Ti brings and decide from there whether to wait or buy now.

Not much on there today, but usually any deal on a GPU gets posted there pretty quickly.
Just saw that 1070Ti's are up for pre orders, prices aren't too bad either.
Starting at £419.99 and going up to £500 on overclocker.co.uk.
420 quid for a card with 5-10%(?) lower performance than the 1080, and around £80 cheaper than a pretty standard 1080 model.
Not bad.

I'm in the market for a 1080ti and wondered if anyone knows generally which of the better custom ones are?
By Laboured Go To PostI'm in the market for a 1080ti and wondered if anyone knows generally which of the better custom ones are?
Many prefer the Asus ones and they do seem very solid, but I went with EVGA in the end, mostly due to their customer support really... Just in case something would happen to it. There's not supposed to be all that much difference in performance, avoiding the founder editions of course. Also read there was some quality problems with some of the gigabyte ones? But didn't really follow it.
By Laboured Go To PostI'm in the market for a 1080ti and wondered if anyone knows generally which of the better custom ones are?Asus, EVGA and MSI seem to have the least amount of issues. If it were me, I'd go with an Asus or EVGA. Steer clear of Gigabyte GPU's though, in my personal experience, I've had nothing but problems with them, plus their customer support is garbage.
Replaced the stock 200mm fan in my Core V21 case yesterday with two cheap RGB 120mm fans. Looks pretty nice with the front grill lit up. My temps have improved too which is a bonus.
Poor camera and dusty grill let the first pic down, but damn £20 for two RGB fans that aren't noisy is pretty good in my book.
Just a shame it's ugly af.

By Laboured Go To PostI'm in the market for a 1080ti and wondered if anyone knows generally which of the better custom ones are?Steer well clear of the MSI Armor edition. The cooler just doesn't cut it with a 1080Ti. Other than that, The ASUS ROG Strix or EVGA FTW3 are generally considered two of the best. but the best, in terms of maximum overclock potential, and thus fastest 1080Ti is the Galax/KFA2 HOF card.
Just a shame it's ugly af.
I've used ASUS and EVGA. EVGA has came though in the clutch many times with their 24/7 tech support and in general great customer service. The Strix line from ASUS is really solid tho, but their support is trash.
By diehard Go To Post1 really good monitor is where it's at.It's a necessity if you play a lot of slower games or games with downtime.
My primary monitor is fucking awesome. Which makes the shitty secondary jarring but I need something for my streams.
Right lads, I think it's between:
1. EVGA GTX 1080ti FTW3 - £767

^ The EVGA FTW3, easy decision right there. Cheaper, and EVGA have really good customer support if you ever need it.
Oh and you can get for a little bit cheaper and with Destiny 2.

By Laboured Go To PostNot bad, but what's shipping cost on OC? I can get free next day with Scan.About £9 or so, still works out cheaper, plus a free copy of Destiny 2 and some Haribo. Genuinely, Overclockers will send you some free Haribo. I don't know why, but it's a thing.

Fair play. I already have Destiny 2 but whatever. Maybe I can sell it to someone.

I received chocolate with my pc parts as well from some Danish site. I was surprised, but pleasantly surprised.
First thing that's made my eye twitch in a while in regards to possibly updating the PC:

Saw Durante hyping this over on ResetEra
Not sure if I'm getting this particular model, but 8k via foveated rendering, wireless, and 200 degree FOV is what I'm looking for in Oculus 2/Vive 2.

Been playing Wolfenstein 2 and been getting this shit in the sky.
What is going on here? Only happens in this area and game runs fine overall.

KIBNERRRRRRRRRRRR
Do people with RGB gear have it cycling through all the different colours at all times? Shit looks like a bad 80's club without the coke.
I've got a couple cheap RGB fans in mine, but I've just got them pulsing on white 24/7. Looks nice without looking tacky.
Right, let's try this again.
Getting new PC for realz this time.
Is there any reason for me to go higher than a 550W PSU if I never plan to go SLI?

Yeah that is what I would do, just for it to never really be a concern with OCing cpu's and such as well. But i've usually no idea what I'm doing, I just do whatever feels right... and a 1080ti felt so right.
If affordable, try to get one better than just bronze certified efficiency. That is typically a better indicator of quality than any other spec for a OSU.
I just want RAM prices to drop. The 8GB i bought last March is now more than twice the price I paid for it, nearly triple in fact. I don't need more RAM but I got that itch.
