Thanks smokey,
you've saved me days of research.
also, what do you guys think of open case designs?

Do you have pets, children, or a dust problem? If the answer to all of these is "no", then I don't think you will have a problem with them.
well then. that's a big no.
I do like smokey's case. the Carbide 540.
and I always like Fractal's simplistic approach with the XL.
looking for a full tower that can handle water cooling solutions.

Why AMD is besting GSYNC on selection and price:
Hint: It's not just the cost of the proprietary module.
...The website 144HzMonitors lists 20 available G-Sync monitors, versus 85 FreeSync monitors, the latter showing more combinations of screen size, refresh rate, and resolution.
Why the disparity? The conventional wisdom is that Nvidia’s proprietary G-Sync hardware module raises the monitor price due to licensing fees, but that’s not a satisfying explanation. Nvidia is still far and away the market share leader in graphics cards, so you’d think that most monitor makers would create G-Sync variants of their FreeSync displays and at least give GeForce users the option of absorbing the module cost.
As I started talking to monitor makers, a more complicated picture emerged. The real reason for G-Sync’s limited availability is as much about design and development concerns as it is about the price of the module itself...

Switch Behavior
- Linear: the keystroke is consistent and smooth
- Tactile: a bump in the middle of travel, usually around the actuation point
- Clicky: a bump in the middle of travel accompanied by a sharp “click” sound
Cherry MX Switch Types (more switch types can be found at this guide)
- Cherry Red: linear
- Cherry Black: linear; requires more force than Cherry Red
- Cherry Blue: clicky; heavy like Cherry Black

I'm such a nerd for keyboards
Sitting here looking at 4 of them in my room right now
Of course...I can't use them atm ;_;

Wonderful write up Kibner. The people at my last job were all about mechanical keyboards. I might have to dive in at some point.
By reilo Go To PostWonderful write up Kibner. The people at my last job were all about mechanical keyboards. I might have to dive in at some point. Thanks! Depending on need and budget, I can help you with some recommendations. I know you work with Unix a lot, so why not a keyboard that was designed by and for heavy Unix people?
It also comes in black, is Mac and Windows compatible, includes DIP switches for configuration options, and never requires you to leave the home row for any key, including functions keys, navigation keys, and numpad (iirc).
;)
Oh, it also uses Topre switches, which are my personal favorite. They are capacitive so there is no "buckling point" you have to force your way through but you still get physical feedback without that extra pressure on your fingers or with loud feedback.
cool guide kibner, I really want to make the switch, but I don't want to spend the money without trying out the different types of switches. need to find somewhere that will let me try them.
I think my next rig will be something like this

By reilo Go To PostNice rec. I'll look into budgeting for one early next year.If you are serious about that, it really is a great keyboard but is not worth the money for everyone. I like it for being a tiny, portable keyboard that uses Topre switches and doesn't require me to leave the home row.
If you just want a mechanical keyboard, perhaps one with Topre switches, there are cheaper options. They just aren't as small, use different switches, and/or have a layout that requires you to leave the home row to reach navigation keys.

Linus had a server style rigs where he had he and his wife's rigs on racks in a storage room and used thunderbolt to route the monitor, mouse, and USB ports to another room.

So this happened twice today and once yesterday. All of it was while I was playing Overwatch which I've never had an issue with before but also Overwatch is the only thing I played today and yesterday so it might not even be that. My comptuer as a whole just randomly starts moving incredibly sluggishly for long periods of times. Not seconds but several minutes. My framerate in game is still its usual 60-70 FPS. I drop out of the game completely and my desktop is in the exact same way. I can move my mouse around but it takes about 30 seconds for anything I click to react. It does this for a while and then after around 10 minutes or so it stops.
My CPU, Memory, and Disk usage is low during this. My temperatures look fine. I have nothing else running in the background that could system hog if I were even having system usage. My disk drive is far from full, I ran malware bytes and found nothing, I updated my graphics drivers. I'm really not sure what's causing this.

Like, I have had some hdds do similar things before. It started with weirdly long response times and, over the course of days/weeks/months, would randomly choose whether to be recognized by windows or even just straight up blue-screening.
Windows is on my SSD but none of my games are which makes me think its my SSD since my in-game FPS stayed the same. Is there a quick, easy way to move my windows stuff from my SSD to my HDD?
A hdd failing won't really affect fps much. It will cause hangup, pausing, and crashes, though.
Not sure how you can get another windows install on your system. Might have to Google that.

Can I just copy my SSD contents onto my HDD, reboot into bios with HDD as my primary and turn off the SSD?
By data Go To PostCan I just copy my SSD contents onto my HDD, reboot into bios with HDD as my primary and turn off the SSD?Nope. There are hidden boot sectors and shit that aren't copied over. You basically have to do a new install on the hdd. This may require you to partition it (which the install process will help with).
You should also get a few HDD and Memory diagnostic tools and run those first. Figure out what the problem is.
By reilo Go To PostYou should also get a few HDD and Memory diagnostic tools and run those first. Figure out what the problem is.Windows has some built in. Can't remember what they are called, though.
Happened agian. Ran the diagnostic tool or whatever in windows to clean it and optimize it but it happened again.
Use this http://gsmartcontrol.sourceforge.net/home/index.php/Downloads to see if there are any SMART errors on the drive.
If the drive was failing that hard i would expect there to already be events. Might be a more complex problem. Maybe start with the easy things and check all your cables?
By Slayven Go To PostAnyone have an RX480?in the market?

Nvidia continuing to fuck up their drivers wtf

Security Bulletin: Multiple vulnerabilities in the NVIDIA Windows GPU Display Driver kernel mode layer (nvlddmkm.sys) handler for DxgDdiEscape and a vulnerability in the Linux GPU Display Driver kernel mode layer (nvidia.ko)
Might be time to seriously look at AMD. Never used them before but heard they've made huge progress from their shit driver days by revamping that entire division

Yeah, I didn't. I said graphic settings can be one click if you would like.
Ok.. I got a GTX 750ti.. I can get one more budget upgrade in before my child is born.. Any suggestions on a resonable upgrade to that card??
By blackace Go To PostIs the GTX 1050 Ti the only clear bang for your buck card out there?I guess it depends on your budget for bang for buck. This guide has a few options, though: http://techreport.com/review/30606/the-tech-report-system-guide-october-2016-edition/4

People have been shitting on AMD for a second tho is it a good card?
The 480? yeah for sure, great for the price.. especially if you can get a deal.
1050 ti is good but the jump from a 750 ti might not be totally worth it. See if you can't swing a 1060 if you want to stay team green.
IMO right now the best deal out there is the R9 Fury for $239 after rebate.

Thanks! I ended up with the 1050ti the price almost doubles for the 1060 and I don't play a lot of high end stuff... but just wanted something to last for a couple of years like my 750.
As long as it looks better than the PS4 I am good. lol
AMD cards are insanely priced even sites or stores have them at all

A pretty neat article chronicling 6 generations of Geforce cards along with benchmarks. From 40nm Fermi (2010) to 16nm Pascal (2016).

I got in the game with the 580. Have had all of these cards, unless the Titan variant was present, which started at the 700 series. Sold the OG Titan X which was apart of the 900 series. Waiting on Voltaaaaaaa
