I had a 212 cooler before, was a good basic one that let me get my i5-750 up to about 3.2-3.4ghz without much effort. Using a Noctua DH-14 now on my 3570k.
Newegg has this GTX 1070 on sale for 399.

I wouldn't get the EVGA 1070. The whole VRM overheating thing. I know they are trying to fix it , but I dunno if I'd take that chance.

Don't need no Titan X to play Overwatch breh.
Got my Gigabyte G1 1070 yesterday. Still can't max 1440p in Forza Horizon 3 in Surfers Paradise but can get close on high. Get 60fps in Hitman on Ultra though, card peaked at about 58c too. Very happy with it.

Sis wants to get the AlienWare Aurora for Cyber Monday, the price will drop to $999. Thoughts?
Of course I've wanted to build her a much cheaper, efficient gaming computer (I've built my last 3 and the most resource intensive thing she'll play is Guild Wars 2/Diablo 3) but she's hung up on warranty issues.

Can I get some options? To piggyback on my last post, I hear the Alienware Aurora may not drop to $999, and so just in case I found these two options:
Inspiron Desktop Gamer Edition (Intel)
Inspiron Desktop Gamer Edition (AMD)
Which looks better by specs?

Probably the intel.

By Kibner Go To PostProbably the intel. Thanks man. I wanted to build her a SSD-HD rig with an i5 processor (she doesn't need an i7) and I hope the Aurora drops, but if it doesn't the Intel is a good fallback with more HD space and I know she likes that.

EDIT: found some issues with both, now I'm just waiting until tomorrow and hope the price drop hits.
Fuck it, she's going for the optional configuration for the Alienware Aurora. I read too many sketchy things about the XPS line and she already been burned before with them.
Don't forget to select the keyboard and mouse to get some free ones. Also, deselect the Office package if she already has it to save $100. And to get the extended warranty since that was something she wanted.

And to get the extended warranty since that was something she wanted.Yeah she checked those, but she's being stubborn and selecting Office and other things that cost more that she doesn't need. Not listening to me at all, nevermind that I built my last 3 computers and can get Office/Windows/etc for free and all... fuck I could've built a more compatible rig for $500 cheaper.
Seeing good things about the Aurora R5 on YouTube. As long as I can install the DVD and 2nd hard drive w/o voiding anything (confirmed with CSR) I'm good.
Is this the thing where they pay to update it? I haven't paid attention to that stuff since I don't bother with it.
By reilo Go To PostIsn't Office on a monthly pay model now anyhow? For 365, yeah. For the installed software you pay once.

That Aurora you linked comes with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2016, which you don't pay yearly for.
By MS Store Go To PostWhat's the difference between Office 365 plans and Office 2016 suites?
Office 365 plans include the complete suite of Office applications, plus other services that are enabled over the Internet, including extra cloud storage with OneDrive and Skype minutes for home use. With Office 365 you get the full, installed Office experience on PCs, Macs, tablets (including Windows, iPad, and Android) and smartphones. Office 365 plans are available as a monthly or annual subscription. With Office 365, upgrades are always included with your subscription.
Office 2016 suites, including Office Home & Student and Home & Business, include applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote; they are available as a one-time purchase for use on a single PC or Mac. The applications are not automatically updated; to get the latest version, you must purchase Office again when the new version becomes available.
Gotcha, pay to update.
Welp wish me luck. I still don't get why she's skittish about the issue when I'm going to have to dig into the system anyway, but it's her money to waste.

By The Frankman Go To PostGotcha, pay to update.Pretty much. I have at least gotten my friends over that fear by offering to help guide them through building their computers to show them it really isn't scary. I typically also help guide them through part selection since they often don't know where to start.

After that, they still come to me with questions like "why won't it boot up" or "why am i getting blue screens now" and such, but they are comfortable working with their machines and picking out parts for themselves, at least, so I don't have to really help them that often. Most actually did their next computer build completely on their own, which I was really proud of!
Are you supposed to buy thermal paste separately or is it supposed to come with the CPU or one of the other components?
By FootballFan Go To PostAre you supposed to buy thermal paste separately or is it supposed to come with the CPU or one of the other components?depends on the reseller.
By Kabro Go To Postdepends on the reseller.I see. Currently in the process of building a pc, I have most the components in boxes but thought I'd check and open a few, noticed there wasn't any thermal paste included with anything

just reading from various 3d forums that Maya utilizes Directx 11 to drive the viewport when modelling. in other words, its gpu driven.
and when compositing, After Effects does a poor job of utilizing all logical cores; benchmark shows single threaded yield higher scores.
The only time I'll be maxing all 24 cores on my xeons are when I'm doing simulations i (liquid, destructions etc) and software based rendering in maya. So basically when rendering, modeling, 4k raw playback in Premiere, its the gpu that will be the biggest player, not the cpu.
shiet, that means i'll have to build a new rig from scratch.
Ive heard some good things about the 5820k and 6800k as a possible candidate, but
those chipsets only take DDR4, and I'm gonna at least 64GB Ram.
I'd like to stay with DDR3 to save cost.
my priority is GPU>>>Memory (speed isn't a concern. DDR3 is sufficent)>>CPU
what's the fastest i7s that works with DDR3?
i read somewhere that the 4790k as a possible candidate.
maybe i should post a PCPartPicker first and go from there.

As mentioned on FB....you'd be investing in an obsolete platform while still paying the intel-E tax.
Put that towards Haswell-E/Broadwell-E machine and DDR4

there's going to be a tech leap with scorpio/volta that raises the floor and ceiling and result in some serious power at good prices

I was planning on getting 64GB of DDR3 ram, but i suppose i can start with 32GB of DDR4 ram for now.
Smokey, seriously, you should be a fucking computer salesman.
you can use the funds to start a youtube tech channel and eventually pay for that ferrari.
Ultimately you know your workflow better than me, but from my limited knowledge of what you do, I wouldn't get anything less than a 6 core. That 4790k is really fast, but you're dumping money into a platform that's already obsolete, and it's a quad core. The intel-E is built for people that do the type of work you do.
