I started with the GeForce 3. :v
Wait, actually, it was just software rendering, iirc. First started playing games on something that had a Pentium @ 133 MHz before jumping up to a P4 3.0 GHz with the GeForce 3.
Then I had whatever ATI laptop chip came in an Alienware laptop circa 2003. I got a gaming desktop after that and had the ATI card after the legendary 9800. Then the GeForce 8800 GTX. Another ATI card I can't remember followed by a GeForce 670 GTX and now my current 1070 GTX.
I remember finally getting a DX 9.0c card (or was it 9.0b?) and all my roomates were shocked and awed that the water in WoW was now transparent!

Oh shit...I did too o_o. Forgot I convinced my mom to buy a new computer that had a Geforce 3 in it. It was some Dell tower with a Pentium 4 iirc. Before that I was playing BF1942, CS, and others on a laptop with an external kb&m and a VGA output to a bigger monitor looooll gawd
By reilo Go To PostI bought the TNT2 so I could play Max Payne. Good ole' days.Nah, those days sucked. Remember having to pick which sound driver you wanted to use within each game you played? Actually having to worry about IRQ conflicts? Gunked up mouse balls? When FPS's didn't even use a mouse? Games coming on a set of floppy disks that weighed almost as much as a textbook? That shit was awful.
The joystick and flight stick peripherals were top-notch, though. So many good choices.
By diehard Go To PostI actually used a Mac and didn't have to worry about games. Was blown away by the 3dfx Voodooftfy
By diehard Go To Postman i played the best gamesThe Mac did have Sim Ant, which absolutely ruled. Also, Myst and Mario Teaches Typing.
My i53570k and pascal Titan X are kind of "slaying" 4k right now. And by slaying I mean 30-60 fps with minimal AA, max everything else but ambient occlusion (worst graphical option of all time).
Kind of shocked. Doom 4 runs so well. The real test will come tonight when I play the Witcher 3 for the first time.

Turn hair works off, and drop it to a mix of med high. Should get in the 50s - 60s.

I did a wrestling move on my wife and ended up stepping on my laptop (why was it on the floor? Because I'm out of town and it was by the bed charging and there is no end table in the guest bedroom.
So now I have dead/stuck pixels that I can only see when the screen is black. They appear like the white stuff when you touch the screen with your finger. Screen does not even seem to notice when I poke at the pixels...nothing happens. My brand new $1500 laptop that I've owned since October, lol.

Hopefully you have a warranty that covers it.
I think Lenovo's warranty will basically cover everything short of opening up something other than the battery, ram, and disk drive compartments.

The first videocard i ever bought was one of those "accelerators" on the market in 1997. It was a Diamond Monster 3DII which i used with some Trident 4mb(!) video card my tower came with.
Looking at something like this for 2017

Placeholders for Skylake-X and 1080ti or next Titan variant.
Would reuse my current Air 540 and its fans, RoG Swift, PSU, and some storage. I've 3 hard drives. 1 is HDD and the other 2 are SSDs, one 160GB (from 2011) and the other 750GB (850 evo). Want to completely get rid of mechanical HDD in the next build. Would bring over the 850 evo just for some extra space, and retire the other two drives.
At least this gives me a ball park figure of what to expect, and is an early template. May even go mATX since I don't plan to SLI anymore, but that would also require a new case. Can probably offset some of it by selling off the X79/4930k.

is there even a game that takes full advantage of 8 threaded i7s let alone a 16-threaded?
hows that 540 working out for you, Smokey?
im debating getting that or the Thermaltake Core X9.

Yeah my 4 series i7 still rules and will keep chugging along for a good 4 years.
I'd never buy a 6 series.
Better off buying the best 5 series one.

Yeah, 1k is way too much for a CPU for the rest of that build. Maybe if it was trying to feed three or four 1080s...

I think there are a few. I know in BF1 the more cores the better. Want to go 8 core because I'm already at 6, and planning to have it be an all purpose machine with all of the editing and video stuff my wife does. May even be able to get the 6950x by framing it as something that will really, really help her workflow๐

1k 8 core is too much for any CPU, but thanks to AMD here we are. I doubt it will be any different with Skylake X even with AMDs new CPU. I've been on a 6 core for going on 3 years. Really want all the new options of the newer platforms, and I'm not side grading to a newer 6 core.

By diehard Go To PostSocket 2066 won't be out for at least another 6 months so he has time to think on it anyway
Yep.I don't actually plan on upgrading to Broadwell-E. We're on the backside of Socket 2011-3, and I'm not trying to get caught in it. That's what happened with my current rig.
SLI is in a weird place of it dying a little bit, but possible mGPU support for DX12 coming (we'll see). I can see why you would want to avoid it.
Man, there's hype over AMD's Ryzen CPU.
If the 16 threaded version can match a 5960x I may have to jump ship.

By reilo Go To PostNo more SLI, Smokey?
What diehard said. SLI support the past 2 years or so for AAA titles has been really bad. The option for mGPU is now left up to devs afaik in dx12, and I don't have a lot of confidence that they will cater to the hardcore mGPU users.

I highly doubt Ryzen will match the Extreme Edition processors from Intel, even with the same amount of cores. We desperately need some kind of competition to Intel.

I haven't bought new shit really since my son was born. Her editing and stuff only came about in the past year or so, but if it can help her and satisfy me, that's cool.
Not necessarily PC Hardware related, but I've started to get more and more into security. Mentioned it plenty of times elsewhere on the site. Out of the blue I thought....why am I not using a VPN? Did some research on quite a few and settled on https://nordvpn.com/. Lots of cool features including a 'Kill-Switch', Double Encryption. Unrestricted internet:
From what I was able to gather NVPN is one of the few that still has access to all of those services. They've got a pretty slick OS X app too that makes it really easy to switch to any country you want. Running NVPN, uBlock Origin, and Ghostery all on Chrome on my Mac ๐ป
Curios if any of yall are running one. I look forward to being able to easily circumvent Steam unlocks from now on!
Filtered, blocked Internet is like visiting a library filled with only the books your aunt likes. Just hop on NordVPN and get instant access to Hulu, Netflix, BBC, ITV, Sky, RaiTV and much more, all from anywhere in the world. Blocked social websites, P2P file sharing service, or VoIP applications? Unblock them and get access to the whole Internet with NordVPN.

I used to use Nordvpn, and was fairly pleased. A few problems though were that they only had one Danish server (which was a huge minus, as I wanted access to Danish things while in Norway and the Philippines), and the fact that their windows app was absolutely dog shit for quite a while, and they also lacked any app for iOS and Android for a long time, which they however fixed now. Their great support, and many different cool features made up for it though. The price was also very good and speeds were good for the price as well, although sometimes slowed down a bit too much for what I liked.
Moved on to expressvpn now though, their speeds and general service is just better, but it's also quite a bit more expensive.

Probably be better off actually contributing to the thread rather than being in my kool-aid not even knowing the flavor.
Anyway, I'm going to call MSI about my laptop next week when everyone is likely back from vacation. These pixels don't bother me (too much) but it's still worth asking how much it would cost to fix if I paid for it myself.

Nearly every outlet praised expressvpn, but like you said i wasn't trying to pay the price difference. The OS X NVPN app is simple and smooth. I downloaded the Android app to use at a public WIFI yesterday. It was also simple to use.
In my experience SLI was always fine. The games you really wanted the juice for were usually AAA games that supported it. The main thing was when you got frustrated and anal thinking you weren't getting the most out of both cards--it was the case at times of course, but more often than not the FPS increase was considerable.
I would go to it again but single cards are providing enough value these days that it's kinda eh.

most of the AAA games released this year and last are lacking in support or there a bunch of issues.
