By Kabro Go To Postwas looking at those asus brands?I've never used one so I can't say anything about their monitors. Asus video cards have always been about average in reliability and customer service, iirc, but others may be able to speak to that more.
are they any good?
they seem to be reasonably priced well.
Now that I think of it, I have an Asus sound card and motherboard. The hardware for both has been fine and running for around four years or so now.
The software, however, can be very buggy and they generally don't keep it up to date through os versions. That shouldn't be an issue with their monitors, though.
I've never had to contact customer support.

Considering getting a 1060 for $200 and settling in at 1080p tbh
Missing my PC something fierce right NOW. I dunno if I wanna drop the $$$ on a 1080 when I know for a fact I'm going in on a complete system rebuild for Volta launch.

all cuz of bf1 huh
I'm enjoying PC, but its probably the best time its been in a while to save up for volta. So much good stuff on console going on this holiday. Easily enough to last a while.

Already know
I dont have much faith in a 1060 at 1440p, but who knows. I'm not familiar at all with the "mainstream" versions of cards. I'm confident it'll do all right at 1080p though. My thinking is when I do the system rebuild, the 1060 would be the perfect backup card, and in thr mean time I could still use my PC and get some gaming out of it.
This is cool and good: http://www.eteknix.com/steam-controller-api-adding-support-dual-shock-4/
Valve is adding support to Steam to let users use the Dualshock 4 with the Steam Controller API. Means you can use all the fine adjustments and mapping options that the Steam Controller API uses.

if I have a monitor with two inputs, one windows pc, other macbook, and I have my mouse & keyboard plugged into the monitor via usb, would the mouse & keyboard work with whatever is the selected input? so I could switch between mac and windows easily?
By ReRixo Go To Postif I have a monitor with two inputs, one windows pc, other macbook, and I have my mouse & keyboard plugged into the monitor via usb, would the mouse & keyboard work with whatever is the selected input? so I could switch between mac and windows easily? Not that I'm aware of. That is a USB hub that needs to be plugged into a machine to carry data to it, otherwise it is just giving power to connected devices. You want something called a KVM switch.
A "software KVM" will work. Something like http://symless.com/synergy/
oh okay thanks, will look for a KVM switch. I wasn't sure if usb data could be transferred via hdmi.
By diehard Go To PostA "software KVM" will work. Something like http://symless.com/synergy/oh this looks insane, didn't realise anything like this existed. will look into it further, thanks!
Just want to pop in and say thanks to you guys.

By Kabro Go To Postsomeone educate me on Solid State Hybrid Drive.Depends. They work by caching files you frequently use to the solid state memory on the drive. This is done automatically as it learns your file usage patterns. Anything that isn't in that cache will not see a speed increase from a normal HDD. Files that it pulls from that cache are faster than a normal HDD but nowhere near a SSD.
do they read/write faster than conventional HDD?
e: a hybrid drive will never be slower than a HDD
Doing a little research shows that the next Intel-E chip, Skylake x, is scheduled for Q2 2017 or sometime around Computex 17. Sounds like a great time to upgrade from my crusty X79/4930k. Although tbh I don't really need to....
Gonna do some house keeping on my rig since it just aits there with no GPU. I need to dust. I need to take fans out and clean them. Going to go away from push/pull on my H100i. Probably need to apply some new thermal paste. Do I get a 1060 or just day fuck it and go 1080. Want some new, more quiet case and radiator fans.
Fuck.

I think I will finally upgrade my cpu when those came out. I use an i7-3770K and it is still good for just about everything I play. Horizons 3 is pushing it to its limits, though.

Based Basin. That's when I plan to upgrade my PC as well. Gonna be the perfect time to retire my tired old 2600k. 6-core cometh.
Although I still haven't ruled out Kaby Lake (non-X) completely.
My first world problem is I've been on 6 core for awhile now. I'm not gonna upgrade to a new platform, only to pay xx for another 6 core chip. That leaves 8 core+ SKUs and Intel jacked those prices because AMD is garbage comp.

Posted some when I first got it doe...
I have been out of the CPU game so long, I'm not even familiar with what's on the market. All I know is that I need an i7 and as many cores as affordable for dev purposes.
By Smokey Go To PostCop the 10 core for 1.8k…I said affordable and I ain't in the 1%, my man.
By diehard Go To PostWhat is your budget? does frequency matter much? ECC?I'll probably be getting one of the midrange yet-to-be-released chips, so like $300-400.
I'm in a situation where I think my RAM is going bad. I'd get blue screens every now and then with a message about memory management. For some reason that got me thinking about the type of RAM i have. Didn't realize it's the same shit I was using back in 2011 on my first P67 system. It's rated at 1600. My Rampage IV Black Edition mobo supports up to 2800...
So I need to fix this. Thing is DDR3 is old and pricing reflects that. Found some Gskill ripjaws @ 2400 for $110. I'm ok with that.
Want to get rid of the Corsair fans in my case ( 3x120mm front, 4x 120mm on H100i, 1x 140mm rear) and replace with Noctuas. Going to go from 4 radiator fans down to 2 as well. The Noctua fans (6) alone came up to $115 lol. I'd carry them over to my next build tho, so not too bad.
Decide what GPU I wanna go with them I'm gud.

Settled on some TridentX 32GB RAM. Didn't dawn on me that I was using slow af RAM from 2011 , or I would've rectified the situation some time ago.
Going to out my gen1 Samsung 4k monitor up for sale too. See if someonr bites.

Especially with DDR3 where latency is a bigger issue, iirc. Like, if you were getting 57 fps before with 1600mhz, 2400mhz ram may be able to get you up to 60 fps.

By diehard Go To PostSkylake is pretty sensitive to RAM frequency.
Correct
I don't think it matters too much for DDR3. Its more that I upgraded everything but RAM during the various stages of my rig, and I want to correct it. My wife does a lot of editing so this would help her and satisfy my first world problem.
By diehard Go To PostSkylake is pretty sensitive to RAM frequency.Dammit, my unfamiliarity with CPU gens after Ivy Bridge strikes again!
e: with that said, I always buy the RAM with the lowest latency. Those chips usually support pretty high frequencies as a matter of course because it's what OCers buy.

Can't wait to get this together with my S7 note. yolo as they say, it's pretty badass to have flaming hardware.
he'll probably get a second card in addition to a replacement for free knowing their customer service
Evga says they will pay for all damages caused by this issue and they will provide cooling pads for free from their site for you to install, or you can send the card to them and they'll do it for you.

The Intel 600p has a 72TB tbw endurance rating which seems pretty low. I'm not to familiar with SSD's so can anyone that is tell me how poor that is? Is it even worth buying or is bigger deal being out of this than it actually is?

Is it even worth buying or is bigger deal being out of this than it actually is?I dunno, but I found this article from a year ago:
Again, this mechanically translates to a faster and more durable drive. Drives 250 GB and smaller are rated for a total 75 TB written before they crash, and those larger are rated for up to 150 TB. Both of these are numbers that will never be breached by 99% of SSD users, and one that stacks up well against the competition.
Also, for what it's worth, I've had my Samsung 840 for several years now and it is at 20TB written. I don't run any games off it, but I do have all my applications, including dev tools and Windows, installed on it.
