By rodeoclown Go To PostThe pricing on the OnePlus 8 is crazy. $699/$799 for the regular and $899/$999 for the pro.
I don't think I could stomach flagship prices for a phone with a camera that mediocre.
It's because of the snapdragon 865 chip and the external 5g modem that most mid to high level phones are so expensive atm. Was going to upgrade for 5g but with those costs and with everything that is happening in the world I might as was well wait till 865+ phones or what the later iteration of that chip is with modem integrated. Might be autumn but I can probably wait till early next year.
By /sy Go To Postis a 4k display on a smartphone a meme?I would say so.
i might just get an SE if apple cant be bothered to put touch id in their high end devices. still using the 6s but the battery is shite
Unless Apple can figure out TouchID to be seamless within the display, I doubt you will ever see it on a high-end Apple Device again.
doesn't the tech behind in-display fingerprint reading already work pretty well? rumours were saying we'd see it in iphones this year but haven't heard any updates in a long time
a touchid sensor should have been in the apple logo on the back as a stop-gap solution anyway

It's probably not quite ready yet, they might be decent but they need to be seamless.
They'll never do the touch sensor on the back. I don't fault them, it's wonky af on the Pixel 2.

They could have it on the power button on the side. Works great on the S10e. A sensor on the back is fine too, don't know what reilo is on about
It's "fine" but it's cumbersome because it's not as easy and straightfoward to use like a more accessible sensor on the front for your thumb.
Besides, most of those non-front facing sensors were put in other places because of patent law and not because of a better experience.
If you think it's better to have TouchID anywhere but the front screen within reach of your thumb then you're lying.

What way are you holding the phone that it's more cumbersome to use a rear sensor? If you're talking about waking the phone up without lifting it then yeah I can agree with that but a sensor on the power button on the side solves that without having such a big chin.
By Kidjr Go To PostGetting bored of note 10, is the samsung ultra any good?
That...seems like a side grade. The camera , and I think larger battery, is really the only thing that makes the Ultra different than the S20+
By reilo Go To PostIt's "fine" but it's cumbersome because it's not as easy and straightfoward to use like a more accessible sensor on the front for your thumb. The front-bottom on the phones was fine when they were 4-inch phones. With the large ass phones, reaching the bottom is way less comfortable than the power button

Ah sad, was hoping for it to be notchless. It looks much smaller in the notch though.
I'll still upgrade because Apple has went away from making the phones thinner and thinner in order to support better battery life. I think the 11 has 4-5 hours more battery life than my XS. I imagine the 12 will be even a bigger difference so it's worth upgrading for that alone.

Magic Leap Inc., the augmented-reality startup that raised more than $2 billion from high-profile investors including Alphabet Inc. and Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., is cutting about half of its workforce as part of a major restructuring, according to people familiar with the matter.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-22/magic-leap-is-said-to-cut-half-of-jobs-in-major-restructuring
About 1,000 employees will be affected, the people added. The company is planning to wind down its consumer business and will instead focus on its enterprise products, the people said, asking not to be identified because the matter is private.
The decision to abandon its consumer ambitions represents a dramatic retreat for a company that was at one time seen as the future of at-home augmented reality.
Next phone coming down to either the Samsung A71 or Pixel 4a. Is the pixel supposed to be better because it seems like the a71 has it beat?
Looks like the Pixel has a better processor. I'll wait a couple weeks.

Family Link is a bit shit. The idea and some of the features are great but it has an all or nothing approach that is super annoying. My nephew has lessons on Classroom and there is a link to a youtube video but it wont play on YouTube Kids which is all he has access to and afaict there is no way to allow the regular YouTube app through Family Link. So I have to change the birthday and hopefully it will allow him to access the full app but I think you lose all the control you had before.
Sooner than expected, Apple has announced a new 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Magic Keyboard. It features optional Intel 10th Gen processors and starts at $1,299. In one sense, it is a minor spec-bump upgrade for the existing lineup of 13-inch MacBook Pros. But it also represents the end of an era: Apple no longer sells any new laptops with the much-maligned butterfly keyboard mechanism. The only shock is that they didn't up it to 14".
Only took them 5 years to roll back from an absolute train-wreck of a keyboard, hilariously shit devotion to the butterfly set all to keep some laptops a few millimeters thinner.
Odd to go with Ice lake on only some models
Apple really needs to develop drivers for Intel WiFI. Could just not be even bothering with the move to ARM.

I can't justify 499€ for a phone anymore, mid-range phones have gotten too good. I've been very happy with an Android One phone (nearly two years old at this point), and will likely replace it with another, or the SE (when the price drops), when the time comes.
By NinjaFridge Go To PostIt's actually the two things I have been missing on the Poco F1 so I am glad those are back.
An IR blaster and NFC? You have my attention
Sounds like the Pixel 4a is delayed until June. Sucks.

Goddammit:
Google is taking one of its biggest steps yet toward permanently phasing out Google Play Music in favor of the company’s newer YouTube Music service. Beginning today, you can finally transfer your entire Google Play Music library — artists, albums, songs, playlists, purchased music, personal uploads, and recommendations — over to YouTube Music with just a few taps. This is a crucial process that some subscribers of Google Play Music have been waiting for before they’re comfortable making the transition that Google wants to see.I already switched once before because of Rdio (RIP to the gawd) shut down. Now I gotta switch again. This is dumb, I really dislike the Spotify UX.
YouTube Music will be your only streaming music option from the company later this year when Google Play Music is fully shut down.
It's really dumb they are killing it for the trash-heap that is YouTube Music. It also makes no sense with their entire Play concept, which is where you get apps and movies. Are they gonna kill movie rentals and move it to YouTube as well?
Starting with Android 10, YouTube Music replaced Google Play Music as the bundled music player on new devices.I'd be so mad 😂
My XZ1 Compact is no longer receiving updates so rip.
Kinda confused about my next iphone. Max spec iphone se is $550 but the max spec iphone 12 is $750 and Apple charges tax.
The S9 I'm typing this on is solid but too big for one hand use so I need something else.

“We have recently discovered that a fraction of a percent of ads consume a disproportionate share of device resources, such as battery and network data, without the user knowing about it,” said Marshall Vale, a product manager on the Chrome team in a blog. “These ads (such as those that mine cryptocurrency, are poorly programmed, or are unoptimized for network usage) can drain battery life, saturate already strained networks, and cost money.”
Google says Chrome will block ads at the following thresholds: 4MB of network data, 15 seconds of CPU usage in any 30-second period, or 60 seconds of total CPU usage. Only 0.3 percent of ads surpass those thresholds, but the ads that do “account for 27% of network data used by ads and 28% of all ad CPU usage,” according to Google.https://www.theverge.com/2020/5/14/21258899/google-chrome-block-resource-heavy-ads-loading-august
Thank god. Even websites like Tom's Hardware just kill my phone and basically crashes Chrome for me because of these shit ads. My phone gets really hot from how badly it drains the battery reading an article. Classic sign is when it fails to outright render halfway in.
