thanks guys. moving is not fun although most of the hard stuff (selling and finding a house are done) but moving 850 miles away right now with gas prices what they are is.....not cheap.
By reilo Go To PostIs work not covering moving expenses?they are but the quotes we are getting are over and in some instances way over the moving expenses they said they would cover (which is there standard and I bet if I pressed on it cause of gas prices they would give me more). Luckily the local company that did our last move in town said they the would do it and their quote was much more reasonable. But we were getting quotes 25-30K from national moving companies.

I'm ready to say that pride is the only thing keeping me from going back to NC
Thinking about using fraud investigation as a leap pad. I will literally never be able to pursue other shit as long as I'm in DC

Man I don’t think I could ever go back to NC
Idk if Atlanta will be home forever, but I just wasn’t able to be happy and thrive in NC.

By domino Go To PostMan I don’t think I could ever go back to NCI don't want to speak for you or anything, but for me? It felt like I was stuck when I was there. Maybe a handful of people I grew up with turned out sane and even less successful. Plus all my family saw me leave 😂 I'm struggling with the idea of being available even now that I'm not a 12 hour flight away. Coming up and going back feels like defeating the purpose even if I'm better off.

I know what I need and what I want NC checks a lot of boxes. I'd love to get to Tucson or Tempe. Even thought about Alabama and Kansas lol...
I keep trying to get overseas too but COVID just punched all that in the mouth
By Kibner Go To PostJust don't tell anyone you moved. The job I was looking at was in Hickory, NC.
Its in the middle of nowhere. Which is excellent.
My issue now is convincing the state to pay me like they mean it.

And I couldn’t be content with what the latter looked like. Just basic experiences, narrow mindsets, limited career potential. It just seemed like the only thing to do was to get married, have kids and just keep doing the same shit and I wanted much more out of life. I felt like I was shortchanging myself.

Besides, what else would be the point? Austin, Denver, Boise, etc didn't end up the way they did because people accepted doo doo local rates. I'm trying to be part of the problem from the other end for once.

You got off the wheel which is more than most can say. If you ever considered going back (years from now) you know that the terms would be wildly different as well.

I imagine NC is of similar scale.
I swear on everything - I refuse to panic and be alarmed just because someone forgot to plan lmao
I refuse.

Finally start the new job tomorrow. Earlier wake ups, business casual and all that jazz, but I'm genuinely excited. From everything I've heard about the place from the outside and inside, it's not the kind of spot to put its people through the ringer, so hopefully that holds true
Jesal fuck reminds me I need to drop you a dm for your help.
On a seperate I am sooooo glad I made the decision to invest in external training because fuck me I'm awful at it. Knowledge transfer can be one of the hardest things when you've been doing a job so long it's instinctive.

I'm with you on the training thing. I'm relatively good at it if I have time to prepare, but most often you end up just last minute having to throw some KT together

Cheers lads. Good first day, everyone is real nice, but it's a hugely different vibe to my last few jobs. Need to get used to the business casual lifestyle
By JesalR Go To PostCheers lads. Good first day, everyone is real nice, but it's a hugely different vibe to my last few jobs. Need to get used to the business casual lifestyleSounds great, hope that the first impression lasts.
What's the business casual lifestyle? Are you more used to a more formal workplace?
I've been massively disappointed by my company lately, so I had a couple of interviews and one of those wants to make me an offer this week. I'm a consultant, so would rather not be one anymore if I was to chose, but this other company seems very nice. The assignments are longer, more project based and you work more in a group which could be fun to try.
But I'm going on paternity leave after the summer for 6 months. The economy is going into the shitter, so I'm afraid of me not having a job when I come back. Here you have to have a 6 months trial before you become fully employed and during that 6 months period it's really easy to let people go.
Need to think about this a little bit.
By rossonero Go To PostSounds great, hope that the first impression lasts.Nah, I've been much more used to the fully casual lifestyle at pure tech companies. This is a little bit more buttoned up, which is fine, I just need to get used to it.

Yeah, 3 times. So we will see what they say in the meeting.
Maybe I don't need to worry, the manufacturing industry is still going very strong despite the shortages and the inflation.

once i didn't take it seriously..... guy offered me a job on the spot after a presentation. and the other time got me the instructor job i loved until covid fucked everything up

both were research jobs so no interest really.
Well the offer was weird. They have no problem with me starting in January 2023, but the starting salary would be 2,5% smaller than what I have now. They talked about the great benefits (not that much better than my current) and how the salary development is faster with them than other companies.
So be it, but no way am I lowering my salary when switching companies. So will kindly tell them today thanks, but fuck no.

Fuck em

My school district is dishing out 4.5% raises and $1,000 retention bonuses for next year. I'll actually make less money, though, because they gave several thousand in retention bonuses this year. Also part of their big pitch for 22-23 is that we're no getting two district-approved "mental health" days. Hooray?
For all my hard work, though, and by virtue of actually renewing my contract again, I have been rewarded with two high level classes (honors/AP split) for next year.

By Old King Rob Go To PostThe only reward for hard work is more workOh, totally. I had three AP classes this past year and they were gigantic headaches because, while the kids are generally good and compliant, people bother the fuck out of you. At least when I was teaching core classes, nobody cared, nobody ever said anything to me, I never heard from parents/admin, and when I called home to tell a parent their kid acted out or failed, they were usually like, "Yeah, I know."
I had one parent send me incredibly condescending emails roughly every two weeks because his student had an A- in my course.
I imagine AP parents are the worst
Like their kid is gonna be doomed to McDonald’s for the rest of their life for having an A- instead of an A

My biggest pet peeve right now is people contacting me out of the blue, asking me to reapply, then throwing my resume in the bin all over again lol
that's a colossal waste of everyone's time

I know its been a LONG road just to get a foot in the door - and the last two years have been hell for teachers everywhere.

I think it's time for a job change. 15K minimum salary increase I'm looking for to combat this fucking inflation. I guess after I pass this CAMS exam I will be in a good spot for a change.

By Perfect Blue Go To PostWhat kind of job are you looking into?I'm in AML/Compliance. Started managing people and direct reporting to the directors over the last year. I honestly could do anything in the current financial services market here besides being a lawyer. I just want more money.
Also thought about fraud when I did the courses for my accounting degree. Quite liked it to be honest. I believe the cert was called CFE - certified fraud examiner or something to that effect.
