By DY_nasty Go To PostHappy to see your getting traction either way though man. I know its been a LONG road just to get a foot in the door - and the last two years have been hell for teachers everywhere.Man, it was tough just getting the degree and everything, but getting into the field was kinda blind luck, too: I happened to meet an important person from school administration and they helped me get two different jobs. The school I was at my first year couldn't bring me back, but I got hired at a different school fairly quickly after and they told me afterward, "You came highly recommended by so and so, so it was basically yours to lose."
I'm just glad to have all honors and up next year because I'm tired of spending all my free time at work writing referrals and calling parents.
Wells Fargo hands out the title of VP like candy. You can literally be an entry level employee and get it. It means shit.
By Lunatic Go To PostNot going to lie the title of director is becoming more common these days as well.Yea seems to be so in certain industries especially. Not very common in software, yet, thankfully, which is what I am gunning for right now.
Companies around here used to hand out titles to everyone because higher ups are allowed to do more overtime. I think it stopped when a company got busted for having a janitor as VP of cleaning or some shit.
I recruit about 3/4 VPs a month for pretty much the same ten companies in the US so feels really vommon. SVP feels like what VP should be - companies will try not to hire at that level externally (rrather promote within)
I'm taking a vacation this weekend but I'm really, really close to dropping this job, leaving DC, and figuring the rest out later

Currently in the process of negotiating a 30k USD raise. May not come in until the end of the year but I'm hoping for sooner. Basically the banking institution I am employed by can't run effectively or efficiently without me as I'm a key employee who can perform anything given to me at a high standard. The Resident Director has been lobbying to the Managing Director and they in turn asked the Global Head of Wealth Management who is receptive of it. The Head has asked for argument to justify it. So this evening I presented to the Resident Director a case study based on the Cayman Islands cost of living, inflation and the current market salaries for what I do for the company. Could tell this was a test as it came to my desk at 2:30pm with EOD being 5:00pm.
I would be so happy if I even get a 15k raise but I am worth the extra 15k on top given I have been approached by other companies looking for my skills. I like where I work just it's so damn expensive here I need it to better support my retired mother and a mortgage.
Just want to say this never came from me but from the RD asking for better pay for me. I'm not one to involve myself in internal politics. I just keep my head down and perform.

I think my biggest issue with my office is that they KNOW their onboarding and inprocessing is shit - but they don't want to acknowledge the problems it creates.
I had to taxi across DC for some bullshit reason and back, they say "omg you should've called us - that's horrible", then immediately after they look at me crazy when I say I have no access to Outlook and was told by support to use the web app.
"Just use outlook its so simple" *leans over me, tries, and hits the same roadblock I did* "You have to keep trying until you get a solution"
Didn't even argue. Just looked at her and said nothing. Called my lead afterwards and took off early.

I feel you man, On boarding really is everything. I took for granted how good my old boss was at being a manager. Knowing my shit coming in, plus the platform he gave me to take off is the main reason I skipped a lot of steps at this company.
After a year into it I’m realizing that everyone else just gets thrown into the fire and spends the first 6 months floundering around and then another 3 months fixing all the fuckups they made. I do a lot of my job in isolation and on the road but since I moved I’ve been in/around the home office for 3 months now and boy there is just no sort of process and procedure at all. Got a meeting with the VP after holiday to pick his brain and see if he sees what I see, and if not I’ll be out of there in the spring. He has me on a upper management track but I don’t want to stay through all of this if he doesn’t really see the issues I see.

I told my lead straight up - I don't know if its intentional or not, but I've not been put in a position to succeed. Today was just some extra shit, but even before that she put my name forward to head up some collaborative effort as if I had some sort of previous experience, access to appropriate tools, or had any kind of attainable goals.
I'm not gonna argue or stress over shit like this anymore. I'm just going to leave lmao

To your last point though, valuing yourself correctly isn't "involving yourself in internal politics."
Companies across the globe rely on people keeping their head down to get away with paying folks less than they're worth.
Applied to some jobs in NC today.
Not even going to be picky. Just need to go so I can stop hating where I'm at.

Welcome to the suck.
So my school application finally went through. I was supposed to go last year but CUNY fucked around and took too long to approve
Going for computer science
Anyone know anywhere cheap to get some Microsoft office keys since I’m gonna need all that for school. I’d rather not use the web app cuz they weren’t as good last time I used it

Try and ask your school’s IT department/software center for access if they give it. I used Microsoft Office through my school when I was there.
Also, congrats!

By JesalR Go To PostGood luck dude.So I got a call out the blue from my MD today and she said I'm getting a 3.5% cost of living increase immediately. She then went on to say that her boss, the head of international private and institutional wealth management, is in agreement that I should have a considerable salary increase that's in line with what I'm worth. So honestly I'm expecting at least 20-30k USD increase as that is the current market.
To your last point though, valuing yourself correctly isn't "involving yourself in internal politics."

That increase would be really helpful as I can support my mother and myself at the same time. My mom's situation has been my primary concern everyday as Cayman is incredibly expensive to live in when retired. I really just want her to have nothing to worry about in her retirement as she raised and supported me well into adulthood.
I like where I work as I have no set starting work time, my own office with an amazing view, and colleagues who value my opinions and expertise. Additionally the company covers all pension and health insurance contributions fully so my contracted salary is my net take home.
Anyways I'm just happy that over the last 2 years things have been working out. I'm incredibly lucky to be in this position.
I'm digging these quarterly bonuses from this new job. A year's worth of bonuses total up to about an extra 6-7% of my yearly pay.
By Kibner Go To PostI'm digging these quarterly bonuses from this new job. A year's worth of bonuses total up to about an extra 6-7% of my yearly pay.
Mine has this as well whereas my last spot had profit sharing. When the profit sharing bonuses hit it was usually large, to the point I pretty much equaled my salary in bonuses, but they were dependent on Firm performance.
Here we get the quarterly bonuses with a cap. Once you max that out a few times, the cap expands another 5k, until it gets to a certain amount and then the “extra” over that certain amount gets split up and distributed to you over the next 4 quarters (in addition to normal bonus) .Then there’s performance multipliers based on firm performance, but it’s not profit sharing.
I think I prefer the quarterly method too as it’s based on your own performance and more consistent, but profit sharing when things are good is whew
Finally got word about funding for a project I worked on 6 months ago, looks like it's not happening. Bummed, but trying to think about the future
It's just hard to sit around and wait for half a year and have no idea if what you've invested in is going to pan out or not, and have no real control over the outcome

Been offered a job in the civil service in the legal/compliance field.
I'm delighted coz it's the area I've my qualifications in and because it's a grade promotion from my old level. Feels like I'm starting to get somewhere with my career.

Hi. Long time since I been here. Im unemployed for a good while. I moved to the UK this year. So new place, new life. I live with a roommate tho. Now I need a job. I graduate this month after what shoulve been 2 year stint at a CUNY community college, turned into a 4 year chapter of existential depression. I need help I don't have much job experience. My CV is trash. The responses I've gotten from jobs I've applied to are rejections. I may just have to get into an apprenticeship. I did Computer Programming btw.
