Probably a stupid question, but do PCs last longer if they're fully powered down when not in use, or does regularly shutting them down and booting them up put more strain on the components?
By Hitch Go To PostProbably a stupid question, but do PCs last longer if they're fully powered down when not in use, or does regularly shutting them down and booting them up put more strain on the components? It used to be the latter, but with spinning / moving mechanical parts like HDDs mostly gone and with modern electronics I'd say it doesn't really matter one way or another. Your components will sooner fail because of something else.
Yeah. Everything should be good for five years, minimum, unless you are pushing things to their limits constantly or get a lemon part.
Maybe pumps for liquid cooling or fan bearings wear out more quickly and need earlier replacing.

Fans on GPUs tho, maybe not. Heard a lot more stories of those failings after a year or less. The RX 470 I bought before Christmas for a build had the fans replaced twice for instance, and I’ve read a fair few stories about it happening. Seems anecdotally an issue with AMD cards and Gigabyte cards in general, the spares are readily available via eBay too.
As for pumps, the biggest killer for those just seems to be mistreatment. Letting them run dry, or in the case of DDCs, overheat.
Not sure on the overall life span tho honestly, I’d assume anything past three years of heavy use it probably pushing it. Could be totally wrong tho.
Ready to blow £300 on a D5, ZMT tubing, 10 new fittings and two new alphacool radiators. Talked myself off the ledge.
I can hear my pump at idle, and that's mildly annoying, but at load I don't hear it at 20%. My temps are good, so the rads aren't really an issue beyond being a pain to drain. Right now, my biggest irks are the PSU, and what I can only assume is coil whine from the GPU.
Gonna flip the PSU around so it's getting fresh air instead of intaking from inside the case. See if that cures it. The coil whine though, can only cross my fingers and hope the next GPU I buy doesn't suffer from it.
Also going to find a solution to better decouple my DDC from the case. 4x rubber washers on the screws likely aren't cutting it. Might try wedge some foam between the whole reservoir and the case.

How long does the battery last?
nephew says "every couple of months" he probably plays 2-3 hours a day i think?
Might go with this (no personal experience though) if i wanted a really inexpensive wired mouse https://www.amazon.com/Anker-Polling-Programmable-Ergonomic-Computer/dp/B07HFX399R
looks like like my kind of ergonomics. Even the most basic logitech gaming mouse is like $30. Maybe someone else has an opinion...

It is a more expensive than the options Diehard posted, but still not too expensive for a quality mouse. Good sensor (a step below the best of the best), good ergonomics, good buttons, five programmable presets, 1000 hz polling rate, totally customizable sensitivity (I recommend staying between 400 and 1000, though), and settings saved to the mouse so you don't need special software installed.

I gotta add some RAM to this machine, it's running buttery smooth, but Chrome is a PIECE OF SHIT. I can't believe how much better Firefox is at resourcing with multiple tabs open. Chrome literally takes up double the RAM per tab. What in tarnation?
Funny enough, FB Pages manager has some new beta shit going on and crashed Chrome LOL.

Really considering going with the Aqua Computers D5 Next.
It's just a D5 pump, same as any other apart from it uses SATA power instead of molex and has some really neat features built in. OLED display, water temp sensor, a simulated flow meter (not 100% accurate in overall flow, but it'll flag a warning if there's zero flow). Some other little bonuses too, built in fan hub, RGB strip connector, built in RGB of course...
Seems like it's the play. Only £25 more than a regular D5.

By Laboured Go To PostProbably cheaper to just not use Chrome tho innit.
Yes, but the labor of moving all my passwords and bookmarks over is such a chore... :(
Besides, extra RAM never hurt anybody. :)

I can see why people love RGB. The lights on this mouse pulsate through the spectrum.
Great clickage
Great glidage ( i dont even have a mouse pad)
great scrollage
has a bunch of extra buttons, default side ones for next/previous page in browsers.
All for $12, hard to imagine what the elite mouse experience is like.
thanks uncle diehard.

My next PC I'll be looking to get as much rgb as possible
Ram, headset stand/holder, mousepad, desk etc.

Think I might have the least RGB out of the main lads in here.
Mouse, keyboard, motherboard, cpu block. Monitor too I guess but the strip on that is used as an ambient light. Don't even have an RGB GPU :(

Since you're toying with the idea of going all out on overkill watercooling and going with an ITX build at the same time, I present you this.
https://dicecases.com/#home
It's a case designed with watercooling as the primary focus, but you can tailor the size of it to your needs. The top and bottom can be enlarged to support up to two 280mm radiators, as thick as 45mm with 25mm fans. The distroplate can be ordered to fit a D5 or DDC. Side panels can be glass or vented. Lot's of options overall with it.
Quite tempted by it myself.

I know you have looked at gaming laptops recently. I have a USA friend who needs a laptop that can handle FF XIV (I think basically any kind of discrete graphics would do), is reliable, and comes in at under $1,000 USD. Is that feasible?

Don’t buy the same one I got my girlfriend, the Asus Zephyrus G. Nothing but trouble.
Should definitely be doable to get something decent for a grand though. The Asus one was on sale for £930 when I got it, and issues we’ve had aside it does run pretty much any game well enough. Fortnite, Apex, Forza H4, etc. can’t imagine FFXIV would be more demanding than those unless it’s heavy on single core performance, or just heavy on the CPU in general.
I really recommend checking out this channel on YT, there’s a lot of laptop reviews on there ranging from budget models to the stupidly high end leg burners.
Does anybody know of a CPU cooler that's similar in design to the Noctua NH-C14S, only bigger, with more cooling capacity?
So basically a low-profile type cooler with the tower positioned horizontally, which allows you to place / hide the fan underneath the fin-stack.

I know of a few, but hard to say if they perform better than the C14S.
The closest competitor is the the Be Quiet Dark Rock Top Flow, but compatibility with different motherboards is spotty and the installation isn't great. Performance between the two, from what I've seen, is similar.

By Kibner Go To PostThat is a somewhat bizarre heatsink design. Interesting…It's the only good way to get 140mm fans on a heatsink in a case with restricted cooler clearance. Quite popular for the NCase.
Also, thanks for the laptop advice!
By HonestVapes Go To PostThat is precisely the aesthetic I have in mind for a potential project I'm thinking of, only I wouldn't mind the heatsink sticking out of the case. In fact, it would be a desired feature. Obviously a standard (dual) tower CPU cooler would tick the sticking out box, but it would look terrible.

Nah, just an idea I'm toying with for a living room HT + gaming PC I might one day get around to building, either in a (heavily) modified existing SFF case or one made / 3D printed / CNC'd from scratch.
