I approve of this Ascension. Welcome to the UW/4K promise land.
Ordered a monitor arm mount off a local store. Should be good quality and fairly lenghty. Really need it now though, cause this is a mess. But man. 15 min with the ultra wide in action and I am in love. Who knew you could fit this much into football manager
damn it looks good

Having gotten displayfusion properly set up, both with windows short cuts and shortcuts in the windows themselves... This is so cummy.
m8 rdr2 looks so realistic on it
By inky Go To PostTruly a productivity first monitor. It's wasted on filthy gamers.

Curious, anybody feel like their current CPU will last them for the next 5 years? Thinking about how long people kept their i5 2500K/i7 2600K, but how different the landscape is for CPUs nowadays.
Back then, 144hz wasn’t as common as it is now. Most were happy with 60hz. Which kinda elongated the useful lifespan of those CPUs for gaming. Coupled with the fact that most games were heavily singled threaded and desktop CPUs stagnated at 4c/8t until Ryzen 1000/Coffee Lake came around.
Whereas now with the way things are heading, some games are actually utilising 8+ threads. How long do you feel like the current 8c/16t parts will last before an upgrade feels necessary?
Do you think the 12c/16t and 16c/32t Zen 2 CPUs will outperform the 9900K in games 5 years from now or will the latter stay on top much by roughly the same margin as it does now?

No idea about performance of the future games. But I could no doubt last 5 years with this.
But why would I want to.
But why would I want to.
Well, I'm on a 2700 so it's not like I was expecting cutting edge performance in the first place, but I'm taking a wait and see approach. Let's see what next gen does, what's the state of PC games next year and if AMD keeps making cheap as fuck mid range processors then why not.
This might be a diehard specific question but maybe we have some other networking experts here:
Is it possible to have a 1 Gb router hooked up to a local network with 10 Gb switches and have LAN communication use the full 10 Gb bandwidth? If not, are there any solutions that would allow that 1 Gb router to always be used for internet connections while LAN devices get the all that 10 Gb goodness?
I ask because of a possible situation I may find myself in 6-24 months from now. I am really wanting to build a completely overkill NAS and would like it to run over a 10 Gb LAN connection for things like Steam cache when both me and the gf might be downloading games over that cache at the same time and want speeds as fast as our SSDs can write. I am also using an Eero router and am subscribed to their Secure+ service which includes malware protection and ad blocking done at the network level (I think it uses a special DNS server that has a blacklist of IPs).
I would like to keep the Eero unit and that subscription because it works decently well and the Encrypt.Me, 1Password, and Malware Bytes subscriptions are very useful. But if it would make more sense to go with a different router and vendor to do what I want and maybe have the NAS pull double duty as a network security device, I'm good with that, too. I also have a NUC7I7DNKE that can be used for any of this, if needed.

On a local network as long as the machines/NAS are on the same subnet and in the same VLAN, you should get a 10Gb connection between the devices that are hooked up to the 10Gb switch.
The one thing that im not sure on is the steam cache. I've never really looked into it but isn't there some sort of override being done somewhere to get files from a local server instead of steam? As long as the configuration is done on the local machine i think that should be fine.. but if it's something you have to define via routing then it might be a problem.

I appreciate the response!
Here is a link to Steam cache project (also works with Origin, Battle.Net and others): https://github.com/lancachenet/monolithic
It looks like it works by creating a DNS redirect.

Lads. I want need a new monitor. This 1080p nonsense has gone on for far too long. I have a GTX 1080. Recommendations, please.

What kinda budget you got for it? Want to go a 16:9 or 21:9?
Not sure how much more demanding 3440x1440 is over 2560x1440, but I think if you're okay with taking a hit to some settings, it should be doable with the 1080. If you just want to go with a 16:9 screen, I heard good things about the Gigabyte AD27QD

Unless you really want that premium IPS panel, there are cheaper VA 120/144hz 34" 21:9 freesync alternatives out there.
Far cheaper, if you're okay with 100hz. All you need for single player games.

How does VA compare to TN? Back in the the day when IPS started to become mainstream the TN panels looked like shit.

But since you’re trying to get me to be sensible with my purchase, I’ll look into the one you suggested and add it to the list. 👍🏾
By bacon Go To PostHow does VA compare to TN? Back in the the day when IPS started to become mainstream the TN panels looked like shit.VA is generally considered middle of the road when it comes to colour reproduction, somewhere between TN and IPS. Never owned one, but I was often tempted to go VA because of how much better the blacks / contrast is. Pixel response time used to be the real bane of VA and I still wouldn't recommend a VA panel to someone who's serious about playing competitive, but it's absolutely fine for everything else.
By Scum Go To PostZabo, pls. Of course I do. 😒You will also get about the same monitor with the Alienware AW3420DW and LG 34GK950G-W. The LG 34GK950F-B also has the same panel but gets rid of the GSYNC module, it being a V1 module limits the refresh rate to 120hz (instead of 144) and doesn't support HDR400 (which isn't a big deal though).

Alienware and Asus seem to have a bit better quality control than LG does, and they come packed a bit better (my LG showed up b0rk and it seems to be an issue judging by reddit).
Don't pay close to MSRP for any of them.
By Facism Go To PostYes scummo spend those raheems
That 10 core just isn’t going to cut it. If you’re going for over 8 cores, then chances are you’ll be looking towards either a 12 core 3900X or 16 core 3950X.
They would’ve been better off just slashing prices, but I guess that’s not an option given they seemingly can’t compete with AMD when it comes to filling the shelves with CPUs.

I'm guessing that only applies to CPU, not GPU right?
Vapes gonna be about that (?) 3080 Titan life?
By Adam Go To PostI'm guessing that only applies to CPU, not GPU right?Depends, I’m still really happy with the performance of the 2080Ti. I’ll likely skip the 3000 series and consider the 4080Ti depending on what the 4K performance uplift will be.
Vapes gonna be about that (?) 3080 Titan life?
Had it for a year thus far, so if I get three out of it I’ll be happy.
By Adam Go To PostSo you guys aren't upgrading next year?CPU ... might, might not. I'm approaching the 3 year mark on this 7700k and I don't know what the perceivable benefit of upgrading would be. Maybe a steady 240fps+ in Apex? Ranging between 170-230fps with my current setup (7700k + 1080ti), which is fine, but you know how it is.
I'm definitely starting to feel like a pleb with only 4 cores tho, so maybe that'll be enough to push me over the edge. I was hoping against all evidence Intel would somehow deliver a sensational counter and leapfrog AMD, but it's safe to say that's not happening anytime soon. Guess I'll continue playing the waiting game, see what Zen 3 brings to the table, go from there.
GPU ... almost certainly, yeah. The 1080ti, while still a fantastic card, is beginning to show its age in new titles @ 3440x1440. And I'm just about ready for that ray-traced future. Summer 2020 would be ideal.
Gonna be an expensive year between new GPU & CPU, 65" OLED and VR headset. If something's gonna get cut, it'll likley be the CPU.
Hopefully a 65'' C10 to replace my B6, and a 3080ti for me in 2020.
Going to keep an eye out for Zen 3 as well, but I doubt I make a move there.
