Anyone know if there's a site and spreadsheet on this year's crops of 2023 laptops?
Looking for 7945hx 64gb ram and 4k resolution (1600p is fine too).
Primarily gonna use it for vfx work. And some light gaming too perhaps.

By HonestVapes Go To PostI’ve been on 11 for a while now and honestly, it doesn’t feel any different from 10.Might be fine in and of itself, but I've never upgraded Windows version without something fucking up before. Maybe it's easier these days?
Also, need to figure out the TPM nonsense, because it says I can't upgrade as is
By JesalR Go To PostI've heard the support is better on Win11, but zero part of me wants to upgradeIt's definitely better, AutoHDR is pretty great, and if every game supported the system-level HDR calibration tool we'd be golden. Alas, not every game does (yet) and even then developers continue to find new and wondrous ways to fuck it all up.
Haven't had any issues with Windows 11 in general, everything's been working alright. I remember having to enable software TPM or however it's called in the BIOS, but that's about it.
Yeah the TPM thing is probably just a bios toggle for most people. For me, I had a bios update that turned it on automatically, although updating bios can be more of a hassle if you have some personalized settings.
The bios update added a rebar option so that's the main reason I did it, but when it comes to updating windows I will always prefer a clean install.

I've never not clean upgraded to a new version of Windows. It's gotta be where 80% of the issues people are experiencing stem from, other than the unavoidable year 1 bugs, which is why I also always wait 6-12 months before switching. Has been working out great for me.

I utterly cannot be bothered with a clean update though. Is there anything in 11 that genuinely makes the upgrade worth that effort?
Gaming-wise, Auto-HDR and DirectStorage support (when games actually start implementing it) are pretty cool.
I tried going with Win 11 but I was getting horrible stuttering in Destiny 2 that for the life of me I couldn't fix.
Looks like the 4060 should only be used by people targeting 1080p:
It is starved for memory bandwidth, which is why the 3060 beats it in some benchmarks.

Some forward progress. PSVR2 doesn’t negotiate the correct modes with a DisplayPort source, so there will need to be intermediary hardware to get it working, but that’s pretty exciting.
Also, the LTT video about coolers meshes with my experience and expectations. It's easy to get competent cooling but the reason why you go above and beyond is noise levels.

Noise levels and sometimes, just because it looks cool.

I'm getting the PC gaming surround sound itch again, but I'm completely out of the loop and I've no idea how I would go about combining the audio interfaces and studio monitors I already have with additional gear in an effort to create a coherent audio setup that works with multiple sources.
Time to start googling and drawing diagrams.

Randomly bought a foot rest off Amazon, and my comfort level and posture really leveled up. Not sure why I never thought to get one for my home setup. Makes a huge difference.
By Celcius Go To PostDo any of you use a UPS (uninterruptible power supply)? If so, what kind?Yes, I have used APC and CyberPower. APC is better but they kept sending me units with awful coil whine which I have been able to avoid with CyberPower. I highly suggest only using UPS's that output an actual sin wave and not just a simulated one in order to have the greatest compatibility with your devices. I use the CP 1500 PFC LCD and it's different power variants for all my devices.
If you need more battery backed ports, you might want to get a PDU. DO NOT use a surge protector as that can fuck with the UPS. Supposedly, power strips without surge or other forms of protection are safe to use with at UPS, but I have always used PDUs just to be on the safe side.
By Adam Go To PostHow much of an upgrade is an 850x over a 970 Evo?Looking beyond the specs its unlikely to be anything noticable unless you are doing something specifically heavily reliant on sequential I/O.

Just wondering since I snagged the 850x 4 TB on a price error and am kind of lazy to upgrade atm
850x is $283 on Amazon right now
Tempted to buy even tho I don’t need it, but I did want a 4tb on my next build

I ended up buying a couple 2TB Inland SSDs from Microcenter when I built my current machine. Cheaper than competitors at the time and no worse than them, either. They use phison controllers and are the Microcenter house brand.
One is pcie4 and the other pcie5. Got an extra pcie4 one for the PS5, too.

Chatted with diehard about this maybe a year ago but it looks like there still isn't a good KVM switch that supports. My usecase is that I am tired of switching between my work MBP and my personal MBP:
Power Delivery w/o the need for an external power adapter Dual monitor at 4k@60 (or to be future proof, 120hz?) USB-C
Every single one of these CONS is a no-go:

You need to connect up to two additional power adapters to get Power Delivery on both USB-C ports.
Power Delivery is available only on one port.
No Power Delivery on USB-C ports means added wire for charging your laptop.
No Power Delivery on the USB-C ports means you cannot charge your laptop while using the switch.
Power Delivery on only one USB-C port means you cannot charge all devices simultaneously.
No Power Delivery on the USB-C ports means you cannot charge your laptop while using the switch. One of the devices supports PD but only for ONE device! What's the point? You were *so* close.
I think I came across a recently announced monitor that has 4k OLED or mini-OLED, high refresh rate, KVM, and PD. I might be better off waiting for that.
Yeah, sadly I have heard the same thing that getting a monitor with a kvm switch and PD is the easiest solution.
