By Punished* Go To PostIt's really been 2021 that I've started watching wrestling and it really amuses me that Dr Britt Baker's entire gimmick from what I've seen is that she's a dentist.
As the boards biggest AEW fanboy I'll give you some backstory.
It's being quite the journey. Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. was the first female wrestler to be hired by AEW. Brandi Rhodes has wrestled, but she's an EVP.
Britt was a babyface when the company started. And was pushed a being a wrestler who also had a day job as a dentist. Some thought that commentary was pushing too hard on her being exactly that. Personally I didn't feel that was the case. As usual, the Internet overreacts and people were booing or outright not reacting to her because of that. You could go as far as saying fans were rejecting her because in the first 3 months of Dynamite: October 2019-December 2019. For a new company that was touring, that was critical time to establish people on the roster. It was not looking good for her as a babyface by the time the calendar turned.
The change happened in January 2020 when AEW went on Chris Jericho's cruise ship to the Bahamas. On the first or second show she cut a promo on Tony Schiavone. She brought up him being a barista. Sidenote: After WCW died, Tony didn't go to WWF/wwe, he did commentary for a Braves affiliate and then worked at Starbucks as a barista. He was not in the limelight. He was out of the wrestling industry. Local people would see Tony Schiavone working as a barista at Starbucks and feel bad for him. Again, the Internet got a hold of that and it was like, "damn, that's what Tony is doing now? that sucks." While being a barista he did a year or so for a different wrestling company called MLW. Tony Khan saved him from that place and Tony eventually joined AEW in 2019 as a commentator when they starting touring with Dynamite.
So yeah, Britt got a lot of heat on the Jericho cruise and from the AEW viewer fanbase for talking shit about Tony having a common service job in the past. in the weeks and months that followed, they because a 2-person act. Tony would be the exclusive interviewer for her. At times she would give him a coffee cup with his name on it, many times misspelled as a rib. She would make fun of how he dressed, his teeth (which she could fix) and other snide remarks.
One of the more important promos she cut that solidified her as a heel and someone that had the audience in her hands was during a February 2020 Dynamite in Texas. Once again Tony was interviewing her and the crowd wasn't having any of it. Instead of being flustered she pivoted and cut a promo on the out of shape fans and their "chubby whataburger faces." At that point she had nuclear heat was a heel that fans despised. Search YouTube for that video and the reactions. Some of them legit loved it, while others booed, but since this is wrestling there's a level of respect for that kind of creativity, even when you're getting ripped as a fan.
Unfortunately for here and everyone in the world, the pandemic came a month later and AEW couldn't tour anymore. They had to go to Daily's Place on March 18th, 2020 in Florida when everything shut down and got two weeks of shows there. When Florida really clamped down, they were forced to go to Atlanta and filmed a months worth of shows there in April. No fans except for the wrestlers in attendance. That gym is the one run by Cody and QT Marshall.
That April taping run was very important. In a match against Hikaru Shida, Britt had a bloodied nose. That was an iconic moment for her. A bloody broken nose, smiling for the camera and still wrestling. Fans started to like her and think of her as a prospective hardcore legend for doing so.
In May 2020 AEW was finally able to go back to Florida and made Daily's Place their official home for the pandemic. If you saw the video at the end of Dynamite last night, that was footage of the 15 months they had been there due to the pandemic. May was also the month where she had a knee injury that kept her out of the ring. Smartly that didn't mean that she was off camera. The Summer of 2020 had her and Rebel (former Dallas Cowboy's Cheerleader, former TNA wrestler, and current AEW makeup artist) become Britt's best friend. Britt was in a wheelchair talking about how she's a role model, it was her division, people in the company had conspired against her, etc. She was on TV weekly and became a sympathetic character.
She officially got back in the ring in September 2020 and people were impressed that she was actually a better wrester after having an extended period of time off. Around this time a limited capacity of fans were allowed in Florida and she was getting really good reactions.
Fast forward to Thunder Rosa's arrival in AEW and those two had been going back and forth for months. Britt saying that even though she wasn't the AEW women's world champion, she's the "face" of the division and an outsider doesn't deserve to be there. Their matches culminated with the Lights Out main event for the St. Patrick's show in March of 2021. Hopefully you saw that one. It's a classic hardcore match and one again, Britt was bloodied and it made for another iconic image of her with her face covered in blood. Britt definitely know how to find the camera and make sure everything is capture.
As vaccines got out there and restrictions passed, there was the increase in fans in the building. That saw Britt doing another promo, I think it was late April or early May where she got the crowd to do the "D" "M" "D" chant like Austin 316 and that has stuck with fans. Later in May 2021 she became champion by defeating Hikaru Shida and here we are.
Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D. is your face of the women's division as a heel that the fans love. With them going back on the road they may have to turn her the other way and make her a face again. Touring is going to be very interesting to see the reactions that everyone gets.
Summary: She was the first signing. Wasn't getting over as a babface. Sort of rejected by the fans. Turns heel on a cruise by making fun of a sympathetic announcer's previous job at Starbucks. Get's nuclear heat by ripping on Texans and their fat whataburger faces. Gets bloodied while wrestling, remains attractive while doing so. Has an injury, yet remains present on TV. Becomes a fan favorite. Has a hardcore women's match on TV. Gets even bloodier while still being attractive. Finally becomes champion.
Good write up Rath.
I've been watching a load of old WWF on YouTube and I gotta say: WCW looked like it sucked.

By Lupercal Go To PostI thought AEW or TNT didn't allow them to, wasn't going to do any suprise debuts anymore?Jericho miscommunicated that on his podcast. It's more of it is a case-by-case basis and picking the spots correctly. Paul Wight coming in as a commentator and AEW ambassador was something that could be used in press releases the day of. Tommy End/Malakai Black (formerly Aleister Black) showing up in an angle to pop a full arena and the fans at home is different. Sting, showing up on that December show last year was really cool. I wouldn't have wanted a TNT Press Release about that on Wednesday morning. Mark Henry debuted at the last PPV unannounced. Andrade debuted on TV unannounced.
All of the wwe wrestlers that were released on April 15th which was days after Wrestlemania have their 90-day non-competes ending on Wednesday the 14th. If any of them are destined to show up in AEW, I would doubt they'll get a press release.
By Nelo Ice Go To Post1 hour in and Fyter Fest night 1 is on fire. AEW hurry up and come to the west coast!.I would love for them to come out to California. Would save me having to fly to Chicago or the East Coast.
Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D.
A tremendous promo.
People on r/Squared Circle and resetera are convinced that Daniel Bryan and CM Punk are both coming to aew.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that there is an internal feeling within WWE that CM Punk has already sign with AEW.
A WWE source has said that internally the belief is that Punk has signed with AEW. There are a number of things going on behind-the-scenes that would indicate that, but nobody in AEW has confirmed it, and of course, they won’t until the decision is made for them to go public with something of that magnitude.
By Punished* Go To PostPeople on r/Squared Circle and resetera are convinced that Daniel Bryan and CM Punk are both coming to aew.I saw the story on Reddit. Punk and Bryan have enough money that any potential mega deal WWE makes probably wouldn't interest them. I think Punk has said before that a good angle and story is what would have him interested in returning.
Not so sure on Bryan, but it's speculated that AEWs relationship with New Japan might be very tempting to him. He really wants to wrestle Tanahashi and Okada apparently.
There’s been far too much smoke on Punk and Danielson. They are really about to be All Elite. TK aka the Forbidden Door is saving pro wrestling.
Living Colour just recently followed AEW on Twitter and ig. Also Kenny may have slipped. Basically get on the hype train, Danielson and Punk are going to be all elite.
AEW have a pay per view in Chicago in September. If that opening riff of Cult of Personality hits the place will go nuclear.
I'm just curious how good Punk will be in the ring.
Off course he'll have good cardio, he always had that and he lives a generally healthy lifestyle.
But he's had how many operations now?

wrasslin shape is some insane shit, he's not gonna look good. he's not shawn or something
Bryan and Punk are two guys who are always gonna be linked. Punk was the biggest indie star on the circuit firing teh early to mid 00's. Then Bryan took over that mantle when Punk joined WWE. Punk was a breakthrough success in the big leagues when many doubted he could do it. Bryan followed that up by becoming a possibly even bigger star when many doubted he would ever amount to much in WWE.
What I'm trying to say is that these two are modern day greats and I hope that if they do join AEW that they give us some great years of wrestling.

I thought he ran marathons and stuff now?
But yeah, he's not going to Goldberg it but he's not running 60 mins iron matches anymore either.

vinny mac is one wild boy
So Rampage at the United Center Aug 20th and right after Darby cuts a promo that ends with "You need to prove yourself in AEW, even if you think you're the best in the world.” Punk is All Elite. Also so AEW Rampage tickets for Punk's potential debut go on sale the same day Raw is in Chicago. Rampage goes on air right as the go home Smackdown for Summerslam goes off air.

I don't get mexican beef, konnan should be livid but they seem to have this on and off relationship.
Regarding the Dominos Pizza commercial break placement story and the fallout, we now have this:
It's looking like petty ass wwe wanted to get advertisers, Domino's specifically, all riled up about the violence by calling and Domino's to complain. It was them fed to this site that ran it, which is also being retweeted for the first time by a wwe wrestler. Shady stuff has been happening.

This doesn't make sense to me. As far as character work goes Bray is possibly the best in the business. That's the stuff WWE prizes above all else in it's wrestlers and they're happy to let that go?
WWE makes a lot of money so budgetary concerns shouldn't be an issue. Unless they're doing the ultra capitalist hawk thing of firing a worker on high wages and rehiring him on half the amount.

It would be rather poignant if Wyatt joined AEW and became to new leader of The Dark Order. Following in the foot steps of Luke Harper/Brodie Lee.
But I think he'll take some time out from wrestling and probably rejoin WWE in like a year.

I missed this from yesterday. Jim Cornett has been shitting on Jon Moxley and calling him a failure in WWE. The guy is a former WWE champion and was the most popular wrestler in the company for a.good few years despite Rollins and Reigns getting pushed far more.
Also, he's a brilliant promo guy and is a throwback to the 80's when wrestlers really embodied their character. He's exactly the kind of guy Cornette has been saying wrestling is missing. He should be in fucking love with Moxley. The man is a hack.

wyatt is young enough to still have 5-8 years at a high level without being wasted by coke boy. for all I know he's gonna do his best shit ever from now on without being hamstrung by a coked up senile old man who thought BIG AMERICA LEX LUGER AND HIS GIANT BIG AMERICA BUS was gonna be a money maker.
