So far so good. Played 3 hours and left it off at the beginning of chapter 2.
A couple of notes:
- This game has far more western RPG gameplay elements and structure that I typically see in stuff like Elder Scrolls or MMOs. It's not a bad thing just didn't quite expect it. I think FFXV is handling those aspects quite well.
- The NPC dialog is terrible and I don't wanna talk to Dave or Cindy ever again ugh.
- It suffers a bit in failing to explain the advanced items and weapon upgrade capabilities. I quite like Ascension.
- The story transition to chapter 2 was kinda badly executed. The cutscene felt more like a trailer than a cohesive story break and would've benefited from being a real 5 min cutscene. How they handled the character reaction to Insomnia falling was pretty terrible.

that cutscene was from the movie reilo. I think it was only added after the patch too
Why do games insist on tacking on turret sections, are they ever fun?!

Intend to just spend 15 minutes doing one side mission.
Do 2 sidemissions, 3 hunts and a spot of fishing. Yep, that's an open world RPG.
Haven't fast travelled yet, 16 hours in. What weapons do you guys have equipped? I'm going for greatwsword, shortsword, spear and magic. Would like to keep that Royal Arms version of the greataxe equipped, but it seems that just having it in one of your slots reduces your defense to 0.

By Ciaran Go To Postthat cutscene was from the movie reilo. I think it was only added after the patch tooThat's fucking dumb. I hate this splitting of videogames into multiple media and this is the reason why. That cutscene just useless, but it would've been more useless if it wasn't in there.
that feed a cat, fish, and sneak past a giant bird shit was straight out of naruto filler arc
I kind of threw that criticism out the window when I read it but goddamn if it aint true

By Kuma Go To PostI take it magic is shit in this game?
I don't know that I'd call it that...my biggest issue with it is the way the magic is controlled. What I've seen so far is they are basically craftable grenades.
By Kuma Go To PostI take it magic is shit in this game? Not at all. It just isn't very spammable (at least in the beginning). It is the absolute best and easiest way to take out groups of stuff.
e: Phaze has it right in that they are probably best used as grenades
yeah Dark don't do side quests.
I'm a fucking prince who just lost everything and this guy is having me deliver onions for him
@Reilo. Watch Eurogamer's video summary of the movie, it's essential. The universe and factions seem quite interesting but they're pissing them away in the game so far

By Kuma Go To PostI take it magic is shit in this game? It's utilized like a grenade like others are saying, but you can combine it/power it up in such a way that suits your playstyle. The toughest thing I'm struggling with early on is when to use it. It's kinda trickier to pull it off in Active vs Wait mode. It also kinda sucks that you have to "fuel up" by finding magic sources near camp grounds, but so far they're abundant in the world and not some Destiny bullshit.

once I'm up against a difficult foe, I wait for Ignis to show me their elemental weaknesses and then I mix them up accordingly.
By Ciaran Go To PostMy advice is not to mix them all up before handMakes sense! What's the best way to trigger Ignis to do that? So far it seems random, maybe I'm missing something obvious.

By Hitch Go To Postedit: got it, just supposed to bypass twitter's own Embed function and use the direct linkIf you quote a post with an embedded tweet, you can also see the bbcode-style tags the forum uses for them. Video and images work in similar ways. In this case, it's (social) (with square braces instead of parentheses). Useful if your browser is having issues with the embedder at the time or you are just a really fast typist.

Haha. I should make that not do that.
By reilo Go To PostYeah, not being able to use that or other symbols (like less than sign) can be kind of annoying. I should submit a ticket to add a "code" black formatter or something that just displays all characters as is in a monospace font. Like "code" or "pre" blocks in bbcode forums.

!!! Didn't work when I tried it months ago, iirc. I either did something wrong or missed the update that introduced it.
Pretty sure it's always been in there. It's in by default via the Python BBCode library we use.
Not sure why it didn't work for you back then. I should expose it to the embed buttons though!

@Hitcher and anyone past chapter 3
it fucking annoys me that we run into the villains and we converse and hangout casually ffs. Not sure why either one of us isnt going for his sword....If I were Noc or one of his friends I would rip their throats out. This will kinda lessen the impact of fighting them eventually later on, the wrong kinda build up if you will..

In case anyone didn't know, you can hit the auto-sprint button just as you are about to run out of stamina and your guy will do a little dash and have his stamina maxed out instantly again.

How are you supposed to know which lure to use before you know which fish are in each spot?
Level 41 and still at chapter 3. Not going to continue until I get that damned Sturdy Helix Horn to upgrade my Engine Blade.

You're genuinely ruining the game for yourself at this point. You'll get all the upgrade mats naturally through doing the main quests anyway
Jesus Flutter
I'm 26, just leaving Lestellum and think I've gone too far
Main quest level jump was very welcome, from 10 going into Lestellum to 18 coming out of there. Picked up a tonne of sidequests, seen a tonne of hunts and earmarked a tonne of car decals there.
The view of the canyon on the way there is gorgeous. Hope you can take the cable car.
Not sure whether to leave the Scraps of Mystery til post-game, can't imagine that you'd ever find all of the pieces without a guide.

Here's the Notepad document I'm using to keep track of things I want to get back to btw
Dungeons-
Inside Keycatrich Trench
Hunts-
Hammerhead 22, 28, 39*
Galdin Quay 20, 28
Longwhythe 25, 27, 40*
Coernix Station 25*
Chocobo Outpost 21, 62*
Cauthus 38, 41, 44*
Lestellum 12, 22, 22, 27, 28, 30*, 32*, 38*
Lestellum west 24, 30, 31, 38*
Cid-
Glass gemstone
Cactuar needle
Dynamo
Coeurl whiskers
Random-
38 Bansdersnatch behind Hammerhead
52 Griffon north of Alstor Slough Parking
Item on top of freight container outside big building on Cnuscherry Plains
Car decal(8000) Lestellum
Expensive ingredients Lestellum
Car upgrades Lestellum garage
Chocobo race-
Gladiolus
Pears
And that's just the stuff the game doesn't track for you. Wish I could see the injured hunters and broken down cars on the map. Even if they're shit, they're named quests so I wanna get them done. Wonder how many weapons I've missed that are just lying around.
This is how I'm looking at the moment. Kinda wish there were more options in weaponry and clothing. Basically just buying whatever has the biggest numbers and sharing it out. Maybe having a flamesword will fuck me over though when I encounter an enemy who is strong against it.

torn between Airdance (Infinite Airsteps) and Impervious (negate damage when you dodge AFTER getting hit)
how infinite is infinite when it uses fucking MP guys :lol

Hmm
Talking of airsteps, I could really do with that Ascension spot that lets you phase in midair. Hate it when I'm mid combo with thr spear and that icon comes up saying that you're about to get hit by an attack you can't block, since I just know I'm about to get smashed out of the air. Non-trash enemies still do a lot of damage if they hit you with a big attack, even if you handily outlevel them. Still often forgetting to phase, and playing too aggressively.

By reilo Go To PostThis ain't Bloodborne bruh, you don't need to do that to yourself.I do this to myself on every FF. I love fighting higher levelled enemies more than getting through the stories tbh. Probably why Im so forgiving of FFXII's flaws.
For example fighting and winning against 2 Couerls was such a rush.

Anyone have any tips for aerial combat? Fighting those fucking birds or snipers you can't get to and hitting Stasis immediately is annoying.
By reilo Go To PostAnyone have any tips for aerial combat? Fighting those fucking birds or snipers you can't get to and hitting Stasis immediately is annoying.Use a quick weapon (like daggers), lock on to them, and use your warp stirke. When you hit with your warp strike, immediately follow up with a quick attack. That should make flying creatures land so your party can wail on them.
I haven't tried this, but one of the ranged machine weapons (like the auto crossbow) may cause them to land?
And there is always magic.
I fucking love it when Prompto hits a bee with Pierce. Looks like massive overkill lol
About to go beneath the waterfall, this area looks great

By reilo Go To PostAnyone have any tips for aerial combat? Fighting those fucking birds or snipers you can't get to and hitting Stasis immediately is annoying.your problem is probably with the lock-on system
try hardlocking on one of them (hold R1 or R1 twice or something) then you'll warp straight to him
I've been doing the lock-on, but for every enemy I do hit, it feels like I slightly miss twice as many. Snipers are mostly manageable, it's birds that are tough cause they evade like a mfer. Some of the camera needs work.

yeah the camera is annoying AF, but I can manage as long as I can see their healths on screen 😂 I've won quite a few battles completely blind (the forest levels whew)
