For your situation, I think the bar itself is fine. Keep in mind that if there is another HDMI revision, you won't be able to take advantage of it with that integration. Also, if there are new sound codec technologies, you are at the mercy of Sony releasing firmware updates for it. Basically, it's not a speaker system that you will be able to keep a decade down the line if you still want to keep up with the latest and greatest.
But if that's not an issue, that's probably the cheapest way to get an above average sounding HT system with Atmos support.

Here is a review of the 15 inch version of the front-ported sub I linked earlier.

lol check out that driver excursion at 10:50
e: i've said it before, but i have the sealed version of the sub in the video and it is powerful enough to make my couch feel like a bowl of jello, even without actually being loud. it's stupid.

[04.30.77]
1. Apply the HDR Game mode.
[04.31.10]
1. Add the HDR Game mode to improve the input lag
2. Improve the video tearing issue in HDR 4K input and Game mode setting
[04.31.15]
1. Improve the Judder issue in 60hz motion.
[04.31.20]
1. Improve the TV reboot issue while playing MLB CP contents.
[05.30.03]
1. Added notification pop up for when app is no longer supported
2. Change in background image of no signal screen
3. Change in Amazon HDR mode
I downgraded to 04.31.10. Still a noticeable brightness difference between say HDR Bright and HDR Game Mode, even with the exact same PQ settings. Actually looks the same as before tbh. Wondering if I need to go to 04.30.77.
After playing 2k18, Madden, and Horizon the majority of the evening, I'm thinking my HDR Game Mode is fine, and I need to re-examine my expectations for HDR. I'm thinking it's all about punchier colors and brighter brights, when that's not necessarily the case. I switched back and forth between HDR Vivid and my HDR Game Mode for example, and while Vivid had the punchier colors and brightness, it lacked subtle detail in the overall picture. Everything was just 'pop' if that makes sense. I also changed the color gamut from Wide to Normal, which on the LGs, normal *is by default* wide. Pretty happy with the picture now tbh. Horizon looks pretty amazing and is one of the best implementations of HDR.
HDR is about more colors and bigger differences between bright and dark. That is what you need to look for to make sure it is working right.
The overall picture dims a bit when my KS8000 goes into HDR mode, but when there is supposed to be something bright on the screen, then ow.

I think it's working right. I also chalk it up to gaming HDR at the moment. In movies it's on point af, but it's pretty inconsistent between games.
Also going to go back and read what you said about the Sony bar, I was in downgrade mode last night.

Just be aware it probably isn't something that is going to be just as good ten years from now because everything is integrated into a single unit. You may be able to bypass the HDMI spec stuff if you (years from now) put a receiver (or pre-amp) between the soundbar and PC.
Also going to go back and read what you said about the Sony bar, I was in downgrade mode last night.
If a new sound codec like, say, Atmos 2.0 comes out, you may be screwed at that point. That's the only "future proofing" thing I would possibly worry about, but it should honestly just be a tiny, tiny factor to consider.
Just cuz I found it earlier and on the off-chance someone may need it, a 5-port HDMI 2.0b (the latest spec) switcher: https://www.amazon.com/SMARTOOO-Switcher-Switch-inputs-output/dp/B01MDR9Y2I
Note: it does not support ARC, but that is not a problem for my setup
e: I would have needed to buy this in order to have a PS4 Pro, XBox One X, Switch, Steam Link, and Chromecast Ultra hooked up to my TV, but my TV now has an app for Steam Link so that may no longer be necessary.

Officially decided to keep the OLED. Today is end of my return period. Gonna head up to BB and buy warranty plan.
My eyes adjusted quickly to 65" from 55" and now feels "normal". Now I'm wishing for a 75" screen or so, especially for games. Threw that out there to wife yesterday . OLED 70"+ are 10k+ right now, but not in #2020

i'm actually looking for higher resolution--shit still isn't crispy enough to me, I think 6k/8k will be the sweet spot in terms of fidelity
its crazy that the ps4 pro is already outdated--the mid console reboot didn't really do a thing for the lifelines of this console generation

PS4 Pro did the opposite for me. Combination of checkerboard 4k + HDR has vastly improved the IQ and performance for me. I posted it in the Gaming thread, but Battlefield feels playable for first time ever to me on console with PS4P.
I imagine Xbox One looks bad and outdated on a 4K set tho. One X can't get here soon enough.
But I def see now where the bigger the screen the better. It's great for movies, but for games 70"+ would be perfect from my view distance.
im probably just salty about battlefront 2 being 1080p in beta
overall i have been impressed with checkerboard

So after being informed by dark10x (from Digital Foundry) that 04.31.10 that I downgraded to has issues handling motion, I moved back up to 04.31.20, which was the original firmware I was on
HDR Game Mode still looks great. I think my original problem was basing the difference of standard HDR vs HDR Game Mode using Madden 18 where it is noticeably darker for whatever reason. My other games don't have THAT drastic of a difference, so I'm going to chalk it up to something with Madden. GT Sport has the best implementation I've seen of HDR and it looks incredible in HDR Game Mode.
Watched some Youtube 4k videos and they looked really good. Hopefully YT HDR support gets added to the app soon, but even standard 1080p videos looked good.
What doesn't look all that good is 720p. Fucking ESPN, ABC, and Fox bringing everybody down. How they continue to broadcast in this archaic resolution is beyond me, it looked bad years ago, and worse now.

Yea...it's absurd how bad the average sport game looks these days. Even the HBO broadcast of Game of Thrones had me scratching my head a little. Broadcast is getting left in the dust technology wise and the issue seems to be getting worse, not better.
I think I may be the only one here who is watching/buying UHD movies, but Amazon is having a promotion - Buy 3 UHD movies for $49.99. Over 100 to choose from.
I already had 10, just copped 6 more with the promotion. May use this to fill out the collection some more later this week.

still...embarrassingly don't have a 4k player smh.
I've been waiting to see news of Halo 6 to determine if I'll bother to get an xbox one x or not

Cheapest stand alone player next to the One S. Light on features, but gets the job done. Might dip <$200 during BF.
Also there's this site that tells you if films are really in 4k or 2k.
Majority of the UHD films are in 2k and touched up for 4k, but combined with HDR, the overall package is worth the upgrade. Hoping as time goes on we'll be getting more "4k native" movies similar to gaming.

Really interested in what LG does with OLED in 2018. They are using a tick-tock model, and 2017 was a "tick". 2018 should see redesigned panels, High Refresh Rate, HDMI 2.1.
Im going to go dark when it gets revealed.

The darkness is powered by LG’s OLED.

i really hope sony makes a follow up to the z9d. only led id seriously consider as a main tv outside of oled. it's outstanding and they consider it higher end than their own oled.

I already own a lot a Blu-Rays and don't see a point in upgrading my whole collection. Just some standout films which would perform better in 4K.
Might need to cop Braveheart.

I'm up to 16 now, myself. But I pretty much stopped any kind of living room entertainment once I realized how bad my old TV was, which was like 5 years ago. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Even though the new one has a decent transfer, that first one though. Crank that sound up.
Apparently Sony is having 25% off on it's TV's for one day. I heard it on radio and somebody brought it up on other site.
Yo, if anyone comes across a mixer with at least two optical in and one out for an affordable price, please let me know. Something like this, but not, ya know, $600.
LG OLED65B6P for $2799.99
Oh lord. Temptation...
Pre Edit: It looks like the C7 is the 2017 model and is $200 more. Hmm. I need to wait a bit longer.

Yeah I wouldn't pay that much for a 2016 model now. But definitely go for the 65'', it's nice.
I also came across this video yesterday which may be relevant to this thread, I know it is to me
So I've been on Samsung 46" LEDs for long enough, a new gaming room is on the cards with our new house rebuild ATM. Any recommendations for 55+inch 4K HDR setup? I'm looking at TV, 4K player and surround speakers to go in at the same time. New game room is 7m x 9.5m and I'll have my gaming PC and X1X in there to hook up. Not looking to break the bank for the new setup but I do want a great image and setup for mates coming over, I also do an annual LAN party so solid split screen or quad screen would be nice. Bit of a movie buff too so want something that caters for games and movies alike.
i hate how game interfaces, such as subtitles or mini-maps are still tiny even on my 42" hdtv. would getting a larger tv, like 60-80" inprove this? looking for an older large, cheaper tv now that 4k/hdr are around.
Look to TCL for budget 4k HDR TVs. Best value out there. If you want more options, check out rtings.com for some great reviews.
What level of surround sound are we talking here? 5.1? Atmos? Receiver choice also factors into if you want Atmos or not.
Rythmik Audio make fantastic subs but not exactly budget. I linked their cheapest one (12 inches, 300 W) and it is still $540.
Your X1X will play 4k stuff so you shouldn't need an additional player.

Thanks for rtings.com, haven't seen that site before. Happy to use the X1X as my 4K player, totally forgot about that. I'm thinking a Sony or Samsung will provide better quality than TCL? I have a few sets from the previous generation and my Samsung is light years in front of my outdoor Hi Sense etc. I feel like for the size unit 55, 65 or 70 etc that going with a better unit is wise yes? Surround I'm not a huge audiophile TBH, basic surround will do and I'm likely putting headphones on most nights to not wake the kids. I'd say surround for movies when we're all watching is preferable as for gaming I have some decent headphones I go to for that purpose.
Sony and Samsung provide a slightly better picture at double and triple the cost of TCL. You can check out what rtings has to say about all of them and make your decision based off their very thorough reviews.
As for surround sound, see if there is a Best Buy or other audio store around you and let them demo their units for you. I know Magnolia inside of Best Buy has a room dedicated to doing just that.
A lot of sound stuff is subjective and what I hear won't be what you hear, so a place that will let you test them like that is invaluable, imo.

So, right now I don't know which set to choose for my new home: I have a 2K budget, and I can get the LG C7 55" for 1800 €, or, I can get the Sony X900E 65" for 1500€.
Basically, I wanted to go balls deep into OLED, but on the other thread of another forum, everyone said it would be better to go for the bigger size. Thing thism Rtings seems to be pretty sure the way to go is to get the C7 since it tracks better on everything as image quality, response time, etc... other than brightness.

OLEDs won't reach the same brightness of an LED just like LED won't reach the same darkness of OLED. However, the general image quality of an OLED is better than an LED, partially due to those deeper blacks.
OLED cannot get as bright but i don't think it's that big of a deal. My OLED gets used in daytime all the time and it's fine, and my backlight isn't even at 100%. The other PQ aspects of OLED more than makes up for lack of comparative brightness .

True. I love my S8 and I have been using OLED screens since the S1 :)
Still not sure about the size. I'm going to stay away from the TV like 2.5 meters.
Another thing. If i get a soundbars should i get one with HDMI passhtrough like an AV receiver or just use ARC to pipe everything ?
