Ta, matey. They seem pretty good, I had a look at Scan's custom laptops too but they're about the same price. Also had a look at a prebuilt, for a grand. Saw it in a HUB video and they seemed pretty happy with the price/perf of it, Acer Helios 300
Also debating whether to go balls out on it. Like I've got an end game PC on my desk, so I feel wrong palming her off with a 1060 laptop.
By rerixo Go To PostELMB sounds awful but maybe I just need to see it in person. Think I'll get that LG monitor while I wait for the ultrawide 4k hdr dreamThe potential gains are not insignificant, at all. The main problem is the loss of brightness. If your monitor backlight isn't bright enough to compensate for black frame insertion, the image gets too dark for comfort. That's why I never use it on my Bravia. The increase in motion clarity is otherwise quite noticeable, as is unfortunately eye strain. But we're talking 60hz flickering vs. 144hz+, which I imagine takes care of that for the most part. I wonder how many pros use it, though they're mostly gaming on TN monitors, where motion blur is less of an issue to begin with.
ELMB + gsync/freesync is an interesting tech evolution, but also kind of a useless one, because you generally want to disable VRR in competitive reflex-based games anyway to get rid of the potential input lag that VRR brings, however minor. Nobody cares about an additional 1-10ms lag in single player games, not when you put it against the benefits of free/gsync. Motion blur isn't a problem either, unless you're rocking an extremely shitty VA panel, so no real need for ELMB there.
At the moment I'm leaning towards recommending my bro gets either the monitor with the best black frame interpolation mode, which I don't know which one is yet, but it definitely isn't the aforementioned Asus (not quite bright enough, apparently) ... or he just forgets about ELMB and gets the LG, which doesn't have black frame insertion, but does everything else slightly better.
By HottestVapes Go To PostIt’s good af packaging thoThat it is. Unfortunately they fucked up and sent me a 40x20mm fan instead of the 40x10mm I ordered. Already modified the Pi4 case to accomodate a taller fan and arguably improved on the design in the process, so I'll gladly keep it. The newest Pi gets hot as fuck, goddamn.
If Noctua choose to rectify their error by sending me the 40x10mm also, well, even better.
By HottestVapes Go To PostAfter owning one myself, I’d only go back to a DAN sized case with mid range parts, which is a shame because they’re really easy to build in and great looking cases too.I had in mind a Noctua themed Dan A4.
The downside is there’s a real trade off between noise, temps and performance. You can only pick fwo, acceptable temps and performance at the expense of noise, acceptably low noise and temps at the expense of performance (I.e. undevolting, underclocking, etc.) and so on.
If you decide to go with it, go for a Cryorig C7G and swap the fan for an A9x14. The stock fan is loud af, and really turbulent against the side panel.
The Alpenfohn Blackridge isn’t worth the hassle, too many compatibility issues. Especially on AM4 boards but even some Intel boards have issues with it.
The L9i/L9a is only worth using with a fan duct.
The 645LT AIO is worth using for i7/R7 CPUs. I wouldn’t at all recommend a 9900K/3900X though. It’s a good little AIO, I’ve used the 545LC and I was impressed with it. The only downside is it makes the build fairly harder to put together. Cable management really matters with it too.
GPUs tend to hold up really well in the DAN, the main limit is just that you can’t go thicker than two slots. Other than that, had no issue running a 2080Ti in a DAN case beyond the noise being too much for me. It ran a bit warm too, but that was due to the stock cooler more than the case.
Generally, stick with EVGA or FE/Reference models unless it’s a blower. Definitely don’t go with a blower card.
Ultimately, if I'm not satisfied with the thermal or noise performance I could always change to another small form factor enclosure. This like a transitional phase for me anyway.

Oh mate, you'll be fucking sound with a DAN case then. Get the Silverstone AR11 and get an A9x14 for it because the stock fan isn't good.
The AR11 performs like a C7, but it uses screws instead of clips for the fan, so the Noctua fan is an easy replacement. Absolutely perfect combo for the 9600K, I used the same on it in a DAN case not too long ago.
I think I'm pretty set to throw the initial budget out the window and just buy a ridiculous laptop. Flutter, help me.
I'm either going with this specced out with a 2060 https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/defianceV-rtx-17/
Or this specced out with a 2070 https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/recoil-III-17/
I'd assume the thicker Recoil III has better cooling, so going with a 2070 seems a good idea, but I like the thinner aesthetic of the Defiance VI. Either way, I don't think a 2070 MaxQ offers much over a regular 2060, so I don't think it'd be wise to go with? It'll be all for naught anyway, I already she's going to just use it for GTAV and watching Dance Moms.

By Kibner Go To PostI say go with the one that is least likely to burn her legs.
That’s sound advice, but winter is coming up and it’d save on the gas bill.
I've always kinda wanted a Razer but the price is high and i keep hearing concerns about their quality control / reliability.
If their headset, keyboard and mouse products are anything to go by, I would avoid Razer completely.

Due to noise or?
By HottestVapes Go To PostDue to noise or?Waste of money.
And, yeah, like horse said, the heat and noise they put out are fucking awful. Imagine having that loud PS4 Pro a foot away from you instead of like 6+. You can't actually put them on your lap without having like a lapboard or something sitting between it and your legs.
They are also heavy as fuck, which limits their portability. They are desktop replacements for when a desktop isn't feasible, is my opinion on them.
The noise is my main concern, it’s not like Noctua make squirrel cage fans I can replace the stock option with.
I’ve finely tuned my PC to be as silent as possible and as it is, I can hear the HDD clicking away in my girlfriend’s laptop over my own PC at idle. I just know whatever gaming laptop she ends up with is going to be fucking screaming down my ear.
Hands are tied tho, couldn’t convince her to go for a PC instead. If it melts her legs tho, lmao

She gonna be wanting a lap pillow or lap desk pretty dang soon if she plans on gaming with it on her lap and not on an actual desk somewhere.
For noise, yeah, they are comparable to modern consoles when their fans spin up. Except you are closer to them. Maybe even louder.

Gonna have to yolo it and see how it pans out. She’s pretty much taken over my PC as of late to replay GTAV, so if it gets off that I’ll be happy.
Though more likely is I think I’ll be palmed off with the laptop while she stayed on the PC...The fully custom watercooled NCase passion project that I spent days working on going to waste as a GTA box. Pray for me.
GMMK Compact arrived today. Took 10 minutes to pop the switches in. Feels solid in terms of build quality.

I've been out of the loop for a while and looking for an upgrade because my current desktop is getting long in the tooth. It's going to be nothing fancy, a PC for 1080p gaming. Older titles mostly, some newer possibly at medium to high settings. I'll reuse some stuff but I'll need a new

When I built it in 2012 it had an AMD7950 GPU and a 3570K. It served me well and I guess I'm looking for the current day equivalent medium to high level of performance. Budget of €600 if possible. CPU and GPU will add up to over €400 easily I'll bet.

By Kibner Go To PostI take it 60 fps, as well?Oh yeah. Don't mind dialing down the graphics a bit for that but I don't need to get over 60fps.
These purple switches feels so fucking good to use. I thought I was happy with browns, but there's no going back now. Very firm to push down all the way but they actuate very close to the top. Slight bump on actuation like browns, but less pronounced.
Hard to fully describe what these are like, almost like reds but without feeling mushy due to the firm springs. Liking them a lot.
Whole keyboard feels great, good bit of heft to it. Vibrant backlighting, and choosing white in the software actually produces a white light unlike most RGB lights that show bluey/pinkish white.

Recently decided to go for red switches since my keyboard with browns started to show some wear and tear. Had spilled whiskey on the arrow keys years ago so they were all sticky (no big deal) but then the 'E' key started malfunctioning.
Turns out I can not get used to red switches and the keyboard they sent me had a barely functioning 'F' key out of the box! Customer support is taking forever but I doubt I'll stick with the reds. Doesn't feel right.
At least it has nice RGB lights though.

I wasn't a fan of regular MX Cherry Reds. I had them in a K65 and I was so relieved to accidentally fuck the entire board up with a bottle of rioja. I'll never understand how they're marketed for games when there's no tactility to them, they just feel super mushy to me.

It's a real shame they seem to have become the defacto switch for mechanical keyboards these days. Somewhere I'm also pretty curious to try blues but I'm afraid they'll be way louder. CLACK CLACK CLACK.
Safest bet is to return to browns.

I like my reds for gaming that requires quick taps, but I would prefer silvers (still linear, but shorter travel, like a laptop almost). Yeah, they are awful for typing, though. If you have to stick with cherry's for typing, brown is my favorite. If you can get away from them, though, Topre is where it's at for sheer typing bliss.

Think I'm fully set on the the slim 17 inch laptop from PC Spec. i7 9750H, RTX 2060 and 16Gb of RAM should be sound for a few years I'm hoping.
Was tempted by the MSI GS65, looks super clean, but the specs
I know the Ghost looks nice af, but all the QC issues put me off it off it completely. Top hats bending outwards, not matching the colours, etc. For such a premium priced case, absolutely unacceptable in my opinion.
The Nouvolo Steck on the overhand, is cheaper, more easily available and despite the overall lesser build quality has fewer QC issues. Also fits a standard Noctuia L12S as standard without bending the heatpipes.
Sold out currently, but if you're interested in the Ghost S1, I'd really recommend this over it.
https://www.nouvolo.com/
Same config of top/bottom hat combo is a thing too, as well as included feet for better airflow from below. Tempered glass side panels are an option too, nice bonus if you ever plan to do a custom loop and want to see your parts.
Compared to the the Ghost, that's more expensive, harder to come by and has fewer configuration options, it's hard to recommend it.
