And Monaco tires, hyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyper
Mercedes testing additional rain lights for the FIA in todays Barcelona test.
What’s the expected life span of the hypersofts? An entire race?
By Spengo Go To PostWhat’s the expected life span of the hypersofts? An entire race? It's Monaco, so not a lot of tire wear and if the reds will last a couple of GPs ;) Bit surprised some teams did not even bring one extra harder compound to test race pace (tire pressure), but then again even if you get it wrong and pace sucks, no overtaking in the streets of Monaco.
And something that is still hanging in a cloud of gossip and rumours and something I would normally laugh of (like this weekends Mercedes/Pirelli tire conspiracies), but has picked up pace and it has now been reported on by reliable F1 sources, Ferrari has allegedly been at it.
Rumours out of the paddock suggest they have been using their ERS system (battery) above the normal KWs (resulting in extra HPs). If found out to be true that would be terrible for the sport, as we are not talking about grey areas, but blatantly cheating and therefore a illegal car. So lets hope it will stay at just one of those paddock rumours that turn out to be nothing.
Marc Priestlty explains it in his weekly paddock video:
it's that racing weekend of the year again, with Coca Cola 600, Indy 500 and for F1 the FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DE MONACO 2018 in Monte Carlo.
Even though races are mostly boring, other than the start and pit-stops, it is still amazing to see them go this fast through the streets of Monaco, like they do since the 50s with not that many chances. No room for error, 100% concentration as an error is looking at you around every corner. And the speed, specially the swim bad chicane, is just mind blowing quick and with the new hypers no doubt we will be even be faster than last years pole-time.
And afters years of complaining by the teams, we finally have new pit-boxes. Not sure if they added enough space ;)
Slowest track on the calender, narrow, twisty, bumpy and no long straights should even the field just a little. Ferrari won last year, mainly due to tire struggles at Mercedes and will be there or there about this year. If Mercedes can get the tires to work better (more evenly), I expect them to be really fast, maybe even ahead of Ferrari (more mechanical grip). Question mark for me is RBR and mainly because they struggled this year with getting temperature in their tires. So will have to see FP1/2 to see if they manage that, if so they will fight for pole on Saturday, because that car look to have both mechanical and downforce in abundance.
Even though multiple F1 drivers have their residence in Monaco, it is Charles true home race as he was born and raised here. Must be strange to drive so fast through streets that you as kid played on. Slowish start to the season, but he has shown some of his talent in the last couple of races and curious if he can show some more this weekend.
Oh and lads, Firday is party night in Monaco, so Free Practice sessions are on Thursday, aka now ;)
They are behaving so far, just slightly brushing barriers, other than naughty Max (reprimand?) and Alonso no driving (brake issue?)
RBR fast out of the box, Mercdes close (Lewis) and Ferrari needs some pace. Hypers looked bad at the end of the session (25 ish laps), so that might be advantage RBR (look better after their tires) , even though it will be 1 stop race and others pitting will force everyone to pit.
Grosjean just got away with it, bump kerb almost send him straight through.

RBR looks to have the single lap pace to put it on pole, but Ferrari often finds more time during the progression of the weekend. Mercedes complained the most, but lets see FP3 on Saturday morning. Renault looked best of the rest to me, as McLaren boys did their fastest time later in the session.
And long run pace, who cares its Monaco ;)
Mercedes were right to be worried about Monaco. Hope RBR can actually convert this pace into good results with both cars for once. It's only Thursday but 0.5 clear is incredible, and their car just looks absolutely planted here. Should be fun.
By Spengo Go To PostFerrari could crush Red Bull dreams in a few hours if they manage the balance.nah, they just need to keep it out of the barrier, which seems impossible for Max this year ;)
Same as two years ago, although this time probably the Renault just put him of.
By Spengo Go To PostHaha, new track record by 1 thousandth by Daniel.Hope so, looked like Sainz just put him off, so if car is ok I think mentally he should be able to put it away. Although confidence knock in Monaco is not what you want just before the Q session starts.
:(
Not sure if the car will be ready for Max.
results FP3:
RBR fastest this weekend if others don't find anything in the next two hours. Merc0edes struggling, similar to next year, so they need a mega lap to be in contention.
And Toro Rosso low speed traction, like Bahrain, put them in the mix again......its going to be close between those cars in Q and clean lap or not might make the difference.
By Spengo Go To PostDoubtful that max will make quali nowmore issues than they expected and their goes your poleposition and your entire weekend.
as expected, those we clean laps gain few tenth and are through, Hartley main victim and Leclerck nice lap for p9 !
Mercedes not making it on US, so they will have to go to the Hypers
playing Starcraft is always the right thing to do ;)

I'm going to play StarCraft or something.

DannyRic, with Max gone it was a case of taking the present, as far as that's possible in Monaco ;) and he did !!!
Vettel/Lewis behind him, curious how bad the Merc tires are going to be, seeing that they were trying to get through on the US in Q2 and failed.
Ocon and Force India (did not expect that), best of the rest, but so close less than 2 tenths to Gasly on p10.
And the full Q session results:
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostHAHAHA Flavio only cares about the girls coming back.a few lol
He clearly banged a few.
Lets see if there is some action at the start and if I can stay awake after that and be fit for the Indy 500 ;)
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostStill one of the most disturbing pictures ever.hep, not gonna argue with that
if DannyRic leads after 1st corner its going to be a easy win, so lets hope vettel/lewis has abetter start.

Yeah, I think they had a kid together.
And he dated Naomi Campbell.
Danny Ric keeping the pace slow is helping Max.
tnis pace should be good enough, just hope it doesn't get worse :(
and gasly is doing stellar job on those old hypers

And apparently we are going to Miami, 10 year deal.
Not sure what RBR is trying to do with Max, as when he pits he is last again, unless some others will do two stops

By Spengo Go To PostHave Mercedes forced the Ferrari and Red Bull into a 2 stop? If so Bottas is in prime position. If I was Bottas I would two stop, not going to loose a place and if others (DannyRic pace) struggle, maybe something will happen.
What an amazing track, Ocon is lapping one second quicker than DannyRic and Vettel still cannot get close to a wounded RBR.
4/5 laps and Ocon sits on tail of Bottas, wtf

charlescharlescharles :(
Leclerck behind us has a problem, you could say that ;)
VSC kills of last bit of drama :( , but hey DannyRic win....so glad car made it
hope I did not jinx it ;)

Glad DannyRic made it, but at the same do not want to now how big the gap with the others would have been. Also showed again that RBR could have been seriously hurt by Max his FP3 antics, today he behaved ;)
Vettel picks up few more than Lewis and fantastic drive by the youngsters Ocon/Gasly!
By Spengo Go To PostCrikey.yeah the guy in the pit in the Auer (Orange Merc) accident was taken to hospital with legs broken. And to top this weekend weird of, Indycar pace car crashed before the race start :P
A few broken legs no doubt.
