I'll be massively surprised if he doesn't at the very least get the crap chewed out of him Monday morning.
Round 7 and we are of to Montréal for the FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX HEINEKEN DU CANADA 2018 on the circuit Gilles-Villeneuve.
Semi street track with walls always nearby and therefore little errors punished hard. Long (back)straight & lap is 60% flat-out, but the track also has a lot of "chicanes", which require good braking stability and a car able to handle the kerbs to use them as much as possible. Mercedes/Lewis have been dominant in hybrid area, but I wouldn't rule out Ferrari this year. Doubt Renault will bring enough extra power for the RBR boys to be competitive in qualifying, maybe the hypersoft can help them in the race on Sunday, but short pitstop time would not help them that much if others need to stop one more time.
As always in Montréal, it's power update season and Ferrari is according to the Italian press bringing 10Hp to the Canadian party. Could help Sebastian this weekend and strangely enough, he has had a very good year imo (better than last), he needs it due to some bad luck so far. And by the time I was done looking for pictures, Ferrari talks about 5/7 Hp and fuel efficiency. ;)
Mercedes in the last minute cancelled their upgrade engine, because some part was massively;y off, whooping 0.02 mm :P. It was rumoured to bring single digits extra Hp, so just behind the Ferrari update. I expect a "wining" Lewis and a Valteri who does not care to much about it, should be their for the next race.
Honda is promising the biggest step and their update to the combustion engine (ICE) is rumoured to be in the high 20ish Hp. Which would close the gap to Renault and make the decision the RBR top has to make before Austria, Renault or Honda next year, easier. (although feeling it is already decided in favour of Honda). It should help Toro Rosso's fight for a entrance in Q3 easier and expect them to be there a bit more frequent.
And lastly Renault, they promised +- 20 Hp, but closer to this weekend Abiteboul is getting more and more vague, so not even sure if and what they will bring..........what's new ;)
Was good to see some pictures of a happy Kvyat in the paddock, even though I still have to get used to seeing him in red. Hope a journalist asked him what he felt about his RBR successor and his mistakes ;)
Talking about Max, race 7 and he still needs a clean weekend. FP1 starts in about an hour.
FP1 results
Mercedes looked good, RBR on Hypers not to bad , Ferrari looked like a Ferrari on a Friday ;)
Williams struggling with their balance rear, hammer did not help ;)
And Fernando being Fernando, even in FP1 , see Spanish media cut of the part were he went on to the grass a bit later ;)

FP2 results
Mercdes looks to be avoiding the Hypersofts and only did use the US/SS in FP2. Fer/RBR did their fastest laps on the hypers, Daniel had some tech issues (no long run). Long run Lewis looked fraction faster than Max and Valteri. Ferrari little further behind, but that's more than often the case lately on Friday.
Alonso, on the US, looks like he has a car to fight for best of the rest (Force India long run was probably best), but its scary close again in the misfiled and slightest error will cost you Q3.

By Spengo Go To PostSomeone tell Max that the RB14 is not supposed to be quick in Montreal.add some quali boost mode and knowing it was Mercedes 1st run on Hyper I get the feeling he will be close but not close enough. Amazing though 3 teams within a tenth and in the midfield there are 5 different teams within a tenth, so quali should be great.
And superslomo's are amazing, Lewis just hitting curb fraction to much and everything "shakes".
Pretty annoying to again and again see them compete well every weekend until Q3 and then the reds and silvers flip a magic switch and presto.
The Marmot strikes back!
There's no way Williams are finishing the race tomorrow with those brakes, everytime Stroll is on screen there is big puffs of brake dust from the start of the session.

Gasly the one out (did he do 2nd run ??) and both McLarens lucky to scrape through to Q2
Was about to wonder what the over/under was for Stroll finishing tomorrow ;)
as expected fer/merc on US
And both McLarens slower than Charles and p14/15, shocking ! Hartley/Magnussen the other two
Renault update for the main team must be working and Force India again good on stop and go (Baku) track.
Vettel very good and pole, Bottas top found pace when he needed it en Max closed his eyes exit last chicane (looked close), but well deserved P3 and right way to stop the silly questions. That party mode, sector 3 is what's costing them.
Lewis messed up both Q3 runs, cannot remember the last time he did that and Hulk & Ocon beat their teammates and best of the rest this weekend. McLaren might be looking a the gap to RBR, but Renault performance shows that they are just "all talk" these days, they need to make something happen in Woking quickly and not just look good on a Friday.
and the full results:
Interview Gasly, engine issue reverted back to old PU, so that explains gap with team mate.
was about to say all clean, but here's Hartley airbone
looks like someone closed all available space, Stroll?

By Spengo Go To PostLooks like Stroll lost the rear there, which crushed Hartley into the wall.yeah looked like that to me to
Perez/Sainz
Time for coffee and hopefully the last bit either because of tirewear or pitsstop gets a bit more exiting
By Spengo Go To PostRace is over now I guess.we thought the same in China ;)
But yeah this track is amazing to hotlap on, but races unless something silly (rain/SC) end up more boring as you would expect looking at the track lay-out.
And just as I type this
nice way McLaren to end Fernado's 300th race. :(
Karma.
True, but changes are necessary, I don't mind cars ugly af but at least some on track action, this is boring af.

Football would be better if we ban Mourinho, but you can also accept the odd boring draw. So I do not see it as dramatic, but fast cars will always create a big wake (dirty air), so you can improve it a little, but never completely fix it. Lets hope 2021 they will go as far as possible without slowing them down to much.
RBR boys on the wrong tires at the start did not help either, they would have been closer if they could have pushed in the 1st stint. But they probably expected to be p5/6 on the grid and then you have to try something different, just did not work this time (ok, 1 place at start for Daniel )

By Spengo Go To PostCome on Max, final push for some excitement at the end.one tenth, not on TV, but hey we waved the flag one lap early :( See now they did not count the last lap, must be rules "once flag waved" finished??
Vettel great controlled race, Bottas ok until error, lost a bit after that and Max being Max.......for once this year ;)
DannyRic good start and gained place by Lewis error, Lewis looses points to Vettel and Kimi....did he do something ??
Renault best of the rest, and on to Paul Ricard, hope racing is better than the look of the track ;)

I'm excited about Paul Ricard.
Count back 2 laps, so It also means the two fastest laps by DannyRic were not counted, what a fuck-up.
They are very lucky Valteri did not run out of fuel a little earlier and Max passed him in the non last lap , that would not have counted.

For some reason I completely missed we have an F1 thread here. Almost at that three races in 15 days part of this season, good times! Also very happy that Max finally had a flawless weekend from FP1 all the way up to the podium after the race.
Also attended my first ever F1 weekend this year in Barcelona. It's quite the event to see in real life. Despite the fact that the engines have changed a lot over the years it was still quite an impressive sound. The Formula 3 cars on the other hand though, what a beautiful noise.

First time is amazing, remember going to a testday on older Spa. Walking through the woods hearing those engines :wow:. First car that I saw, I thought it would crash in to the busstop chicane and then it hit the brakes, still could not believe what I just saw.
And we already know it, but can somebody give those RBR boys a decent engine :please:
