Matman, we better get some tunnel exhaust vids at some point. That 5 cyl is special.
I'm not really a fan of blues, but it looks great on the RS, I like it a lot more than the other options.
And yeah, the E39 is such a beast. When you're driving it fast, I swear the car just shrinks around you. Feels like a light weight sports car, and gives you all the confidence in the world. Then you can just cruise around in a comfy well-appointed sedan when you want to take it easy. The exhaust note with muffler delete puts it at a 10/10 experience, IMO. It's the first time I've had a car for over a year where I'm not already scrambling to find the next car, I'd really like to keep it forever.

By No Love Go To PostThat's a great link. And man it cannot be overstated how excellent the E36 M3 is at any situation you could ask of it. Daily driving, track car, boost monster… It's a jack of all trades, master of all. Shame that the new BMWs aren't as soulfully crafted.Per the bolded, so true. It's a really really underrated platform and car. It makes a bit of sense, as it's bookended by the most overrated M3 (E30), and the most quintessential M3 (E46).
That reminds me, you also own the best BMW ever. The E39 M5 can't be beat, everyone should be scrambling to get one before they're all gone and E30 M3 priced. I love mine to death. I've actually considered buying a 2nd one just because I know they're going to go way up over the next decade.

alright yall im in the market for a vehicle since i sent my car to the great junkyard in the sky
used, preferably under 60K miles, preferably 2010 or newer, 20+ MPG, $16-18K budget (not SLAENT Elite).
i'd like a Jeep Wrangler or some kind of SUV
any other recommendations? i haven't really given it much thought as this purchase was expected to be another 2 years down the road.

E84 X1 (2010-2015), you can find an M-Sport 28i for $18k easy, with low miles. If you want something slightly larger, then the CX-5 is a great choice.
Last BMW in production with hydraulic steering. The 4 banger in there is actually really potent, and very reliable. You could get the 35i with 40-60k miles, but it does have some maintenance expenses around there that inflate the price after purchase. They're not Toyota-style, "neglect it and it'll still run perfectly" reliable, but both engines are reliable when you stay on top of recommended maintenance.

It's perfect, but my god at the asking price: https://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/d/1989-bmw-e30-325is-very-clean/6626502118.html
somehow i totally blanked on Mazdas even though I had to go look at those everytime I got my Lancer worked on. CX-5 doesnt sound like a bad idea tbh. i probably have about 10-14 days until my total loss check comes in so i'll keep brainstorming
that BMW looks awesome but i've heard too many horror stories about the maintenance from people with german vehicles.

Are Camry's definitely better than Accords? I'm pretty much down to two choices and I want to act sort of quick before they get sold.
edit: woah SUVs weren't even on my radar. The Mazda CX-5 that reilo mentioned looks cool, I'm also in that 15-18k price range. Are SUVs reliable?

By Lunatic Go To PostI wouldn't recommend a german car out of warranty to anyone I love.Depends on the car, depends on the brand. As a general blanket statement, this is both lazy and disingenuous.

X1s are super low tech, on a comparatively old platform (underpinned the E90 3 series and E80 1 series from the mid 2000s), with a very stout transmission and engine.
that BMW looks awesome but i've heard too many horror stories about the maintenance from people with german vehicles.
The addage of "german car" is silly, as a Porsche is far more reliable than a number of Japanese cars, and certainly way more reliable than most American cars. Audis, VWs can both be iffy on a number of things, and BMW seems to be hit or miss in terms of reliability. The stuff that's in the X1 is old enough to where there are not really any question marks, and the issues from early on had been ironed out, as the platform was nearly 10 years old when the last two years were rolling off production lines.
I'd never recommend a pre-2010 335, or a 5/7 series in general, as these all have major issues that crop up.
Additionally, they have things like a water pump that needs to be replaced at 60k. People ignore that and keep driving, then it blows and they get mad that their car was unreliable. Or they skip service intervals. Or they let certain things fall by the wayside. If you're not the type of person that stays up on it, then yes, German cars can become "unreliable". It's not like a Toyota where you can go 20k miles without an oil change constantly and it'll last forever anyway.
By s y Go To PostAre Camry's definitely better than Accords? I'm pretty much down to two choices and I want to act sort of quick before they get sold.Yeah, those Mazdas are reliable. Mazdas are what I recommend to non-enthusiasts looking for a reliable, nice car. Design is awesome, reliability is great, and they're far more enjoyable to drive than their Toyota/Honda equivalents. They feel like cars that should be $10-15k more than their price.
edit: woah SUVs weren't even on my radar. The Mazda CX-5 that reilo mentioned looks cool, I'm also in that 15-18k price range. Are SUVs reliable?
Mazda 3, 6, CX5, are all outstanding vehicles.

By Lunatic Go To PostBro he isn't the slaent elite so the he can't afford service costs of a German cars maintenance. I wasn't specifically talking about reliability.
I mean, again, depends on the car, depends on the brand. Some are expensive, some are not. Some are reliable, some are not. There's a lot of cars, and there's a lot of research to figure out what may be good and what may not be good. I can certainly understand why there'd be a generalization like "don't own a german car out of warranty", but I think it's lazy and disingenuous.
I mean, yes, the 30,000 mile service on my M3 is roughly 4-5x more than a Camry. But that doesn't mean that all 3-series cost that much to maintain. A standard 3-series is roughly $250-400 in comparison for a 30k service.
The odd one with a standard 3-series is a regular 3,000 mile oil change which will run you like $100+ ... but on my M3 it's once a year or 10,000 miles and will run me the same because it's like a 10w-60 oil 😬
TIL I'm part of slaent elite coz I drive a German car that's about to go out of warranty lol.
...the fuck really?
I paid about the same for my 30K service... you're telling me I should've bought a 3-series all along?
But really tho, I kinda don't believe $250-400 is the estimate for a BMW in for its 30K service... maybe $400-600 instead. Mazda charges exactly $350 + tax on a 30K service for a CX-5.
Of course I'm ignoring the other factors and all but still, that seems pretty cheap for a BMW.
I already put 15K on my GTI since I got it last September. @___@

By Adam Go To PostMy man matman.Pretty much! In Auto or Comfort mode with the transmission in "D" it's a total kitten as long as you don't put your foot down hard. It rides better and has more comfortable seats than any other sports car that I have ever owned and is even fairly quiet on a good piece of pavement. For me it is completely a daily driver but then again I have always liked small, nimble cars with cozy cockpits. This one just happens to add a very good sound system and a sublime interior.
That is an impressive machine. So happy and not really jealous of you. :p

I still have my Lexus GX470 for when I need more space to haul people or stuff but it's going to get a lot less use now because I find the TTRS so comfortable and fun at the same time. I used to drive the GX a couple of times a week just to give myself a bit of a break from the seats in the MX-5 and regain a bit of composure but I don't need to do that now. The TTRS is capable of maniacal behavior when you want it but driven sedately it is refined and much, much smoother than anything that I have owned before.
Once winter rolls around and the temperature drops the GX will get more use since the TTRS is on summer tires. Winters don't tend to be bad down here in the south but I also don't want to wear out the summer tires prematurely by running them when they are hard as rocks due to the temps outside.
I'm considering the Mazda CX-5. Never driven a SUV. What are its competitors?
edit: seeing that the Hyundai Tucson is cheaper and better(more reliable)

Sadly my commute has me spending about 300 miles a week but at the same time, I wouldn't have bought a GTI if I really cared about keeping the miles low lol.

There's a reason why Hyundai is cheaper, and it's definitely not because it's more reliable lol. Granted it's not 2008 anymore where Hyundai's reliability was literal garbage but there's no chance in hell Hyundai is more reliable than Mazda.
As for it being cheap, let me put it this way... the CX-5 looks like it should've been an Audi, BMW, Volvo, (insert European brand here), whereas the Tucson... well, it definitely looks like a Hyundai.
The only other brand that is on Mazda's level is Volkswagen IMO, but that's not really a surprise considering VW and Audi pretty much one and the same lol.

Very nice. It seems like a dream car for you and I'm glad you got it outright too!
Don't miss the snow though, I always hated driving in it.
And I'll second the exhaust noise vids. :3

looool
I'd love to but I commute about 500 miles a week, so I can't really justify the mileage and gas on my baby.

Mazda CX-5 Is love though, from my limited experience being driven in it.

500 miles a week? Sounds like California lol.
I've driven both the 1st gen and 2nd gen CX-5's(my fam owns both lol) and both offer a similar driving experience. The biggest difference is that the 2nd gen just feels more refined.

I've got a friend (who is also our webmaster and responsible for all of the images on our website where I work) who is studying to be a photographer and has some pretty good gear who has said he's going to take some pictures of the car for me. It's rained nearly every day since I brought it home so once it dries up and I can clean it properly hopefully I'll have some better photos to share.
Time to fap.
I hope not too much like the DB11 clusterfuck. The new Vantage front looks hideous too.
I have low expectations tbh.
[edit]: oh god judging from the spy pics it looks like they just made the Vantage front a bit bigger.
why are the headlights so small? why?

It is the Superleggera version. I imagine the regular version will be a bit more tamed out on the front. But I like it, I think that looks like a proper Aston.
Not sure because this replaces the Aston Martin Vanquish S as well. So the nameplate doesn't really correspond to anything at this moment. The "Superleggera" makes me believe it's the more extreme version of a soon to be announced DBS. It's definitely based on the DB11 but I imagine there'll be another tier slotted inbetween.
Ferrari called its bread and butter V12 812 Superfast instead of just 812, like the old F12.
The names are getting longer and longer.
But historically you are correct i think.

By reilo Go To PostY'all mean this?
That grille is fucking massive. LOL. The first two pics it looks overkill...but the further out it goes, it looks better. That rear end though, no question: winner.
I think there will be no other version of this car. I suspect they added Superleggera to this to completely separate the DBS from the DB11. Because in the past, the DBS = Hotter DB9, but otherwise the exact same car. Now, they're entirely different models with the DBS being the more sport-driven GT car.

Dear lord.
Sweet car.
This is insane.
Thanks for the kind words everyone. Just got home safe and sound at 1 am after 1,200 miles of driving and no sleep the past two days.
Parked inside and gonna go pass out before I have to wake up for work in the morning. Excited to share the full spec later. It is so extensive that it did not fit on the window sticker and there is just an "other options" category at the end for $27,352. Lol
