Well, this is actually the car he sold...and is being sued by Ford for selling.
By reilo Go To PostSpeaking of M3s, the next generation has been caught testing already. So if any of you are considering that segment at all, wait.I wonder if BMW will make it more of a driver's car than the current gen? Shedding a few pounds and increasing driver feedback would go a long way towards bringing the M3 back to preeminence in the segment. As it stands now it is a bit watered down and lacking as compared to the older versions.
If the new one hits by 2020 I would definitely give it a shot.
By all accounts the refreshed M3 with Competition Package is really great, do hopefully they build off of that.
So I have the chance of purchasing a 2012 Lotus Evora 2+2 with 34,000 miles on it. It's an automatic transmission.
Any opinions on this car? Yay or nay? Anything I should be aware of?? Looks just like this

It's an automatic transmission. As a fun 2nd or 3rd car, heck yeah, if the price is right (and maybe if you have a Lotus dealership or mechanic within easy driving distance). They have a Toyota powertrain so not much to worry about there but it's the other stuff you want to watch out for (electronics, AC, sensors, etc.). Probably worth it to hit up the owner specific forums and see what actual owners are saying and what advice they might have. Otherwise, the Evora is, by all accounts, a special driving experience.

I'm having some sort of weird anxiety pulling the trigger on an E46. Idk why. I have my close friend (who is a BMW master) ready to do work for me, should I find an accidental basket case. Put it this way, he will only charge me $1k for an entire clutch job (including new flywheel, clutch, labor and misc parts).
But for some reason, I see mileage and it scares me off. Meanwhile, I keep trying to tell myself "breh, you knew you had to go for higher mileage".
Also, I see some nice examples out in Portland, Dallas, and Houston. The Houston cars I have to be VERRY careful about for obvious reasons (flooding). But I may still ask one of you fine folk one day to look at them. :p

I think the worries with older BMWs isn't even core internal engine shit. It's all the ancillary stuff: VANOS, HPFP, clutch, etc.
Also, do you really want to look at cars from the PNW? Super cold and rainy up there 9 months out of the year.

VANOS and Rear Subframe were recalled and many owners should have fixed them, as BMW was class actioned for both. But there were limitations. And even still, a VANOS job will only cost me $700 to do through my friend. But the rear sub frame will cost kit + labor. And will go for over 1K. Fortunately, it's easy to tell if the car has it (drive it, listen to creaks, metal on metal slaps, and look underneath for rust around the strut towers and above the diff area).
I'm not actively looking in Portland or anything, it just so happens that some of the nicer colors end up there somehow. As do higher mileage cars, which makes sense.
It's also a damn shame that some owners mod the fuck out of these cars with all sorts of bullshit ass exhausts, headers, stance coils and wheels. Ugh.
Too many silver and black M3s out there. I did just find a Leguna Seca Blue convertible though not too far on eBay - about 70 miles away. Has some small mods on it, but they're reversible (Z8 replica wheels with spokes painted blue, and blue halos). But the fact it's LSB + Black interior + Nav + competition steering wheel + 6MT = major win.
Let's see what the owner says, I found it on eBay...so I hope it's not a bullshit car. But the member profile has a 100% with 700 sales.

That's ok Alpha, older BMW's scare me too. They are such good driver's cars but you definitely have to pay to play when you purchase one. I think in your case, since you have access to a good mechanic and are knowledgeable about trouble spots, you should be in as good a position to buy one of those as anyone out there.
In other news I have decided that my dream car is now a 911 GT3 RS. Every time I see and hear one it just blows up the pleasure centers in my brain like no other car does. I have a clip of one going around the Porsche Experience Center track on my phone from when my Dad and I went recently and I pull it up just to hear the thing howl and scream about once a week. The sounds that thing makes just does it for me.

I've been talking to the guy today. He wasn't willing to meet up half way, concerned I could be a tire kicker. I get it, but...I'm a serious buyer. But we kept talking and I asked him about VANOS and subframe issues. And he's actually given me pretty good answers, the car has been maintained well and some preventative work has already been done and inspected too. With paper work documented (I do have to be careful though, because his cell# also links to a mechanic shop in his area of Florida, so I want to be sure the paper work isn't bullshit).
The car does have some cheesy mods done, but they are small and easily reversible (namely the wheels and lights). Here it is:

Convertible life though?
Yeah, I think so. Already have a powerful coupe, so I figured maybe I'd switch it up for the 3rd whip.
Also, hopefully this image works:
Take a guess what that is.
BMW X7 hahaha. The lower and upper grille...holy shit. LOL
Back to the M3, owner responded again. The car seems super clean. But I just learned of the 400lb increase over the coupe...and ugh, I don't think I can deal with that. I thought it was 200lbs. 400lbs is a shit load. I may just search for a coupe only, then

By reilo Go To PostTotally reversible. It's a Florida car, covertible life might be nice for a change. I guess it depends on the nuts and bolts of why it is being purchased. If it is just to own and enjoy an E46 M3 then the convertible would still be good. If it's to perhaps make it into a more focused street / track car then yeah, the hard top would be better.
Convertible life though?
You mention that having a convertible car in Florida may be nice. That is something that I have never really thought much about, tbh. I always worry about convertibles due to ease of theft, birds/bugs, and one more mechanical feature that can break.
By Smokey Go To PostMy BMW was a vert. I enjoyed it on those perfect days you could comfortably let the top down.
Just not sure how I feel about a 3800lb car with a stick...seems counter intuitive.
A 'vert in Florida sounds like a fun time tbh.
Back when I had my Miata, I rarely put the top down since Dallas only has two seasons... it's either hot or cold as fuck lol. And when it's prime 'vert weather like the 60's and 70's, it's as humid as Satan's balls haha.
Those perfect days Smokey's talking about is really really rare. I think in 2016 I only dropped my top 30 days out of the year and all of them happened in the start of fall and spring seasons.

It's pretty much the same type of weather here in Georgia, jongkookie. I don't drop the top of my Miata all that much either and the fact that it was a convertible had very little to do with my purchase decision. In the end though, a great driving car is a great driving car regardless of its configuration whether its coupe, convertible, sedan, hatchback, whatever.
I have always wished that Mazda would make a small number of slightly more hardcore "coupe" Miatas with fixed a fixed roof. I bet it would have an audience.

The DB11 in white.. my god
That's the best head to head that Jonny and Jethro have done yet. Their back and forth was very good and you could tell they were a lot more comfortable with one another. And while the DB11 is sexy I really like what Lexus has done with the LC500. If I had $100k to spend on a GT car then the LC500 would most likely be it.
I was walking to the bank this morning when I saw a Dino 246 GT coming around the corner. unfortunately the light was green and he drove off so I didn’t have enough time to snap a picture:(
Saw an white LC500 here today. Thought it looked ok. That wierd grill just kills anything about the look for me.
By reilo Go To Post400lbs holy shit
Doesn't that basically make a 330 CI coupe faster?
You have a fever, breh?
That's a no.
But, I'm actually considering this car again. It's clean. And I found some really nice tunes and mods that should overcome that deficit.
What in the actual fuck 3800 lbs?!?!?
That's like 100 shy of my M5. Without the insane V8.
Careful on tunes and mods for the M3 (or really any BMW). They're great in the short run, but almost always have consequences later on down the line. It's one of the reasons why I still prefer Dinan stuff, despite the name tax. I don't have to do tons of research to make sure that it isn't going to break my car at some point.
*edit*
Also, loving my Hakkapeliittas. The ice traction is seriously amazing. I feel way more secure in this than I did in a truck with ATs and 4WD.

Ooooh... M5 goodness. I've definitely thought about getting one of those as a winter beater/track beater car more than once.
Got some Michelin Alpin tires on order for the Cayman, should be interesting to see how it handles snow. Damn things are pricey though.

That said, I test drove my neighbor's 2001 M3 just to get a feel for the clutch and gearbox. The feel of the clutch is nice and smooth, pedal travel was great. Definitely not an on/off switch like my 370Z was. The shifter was a little too tall for my liking (unlike my 370Z's), and the throws perhaps long-ish (again, unlike the Z). Shifting the car quick, as a result, required more effort. Also, there is some vagueness as far as what gear you're going into.
Lastly, while the car is fairly easy to rev match (I did it a couple of times on my 1st attempt), what I didn't quite care for is the 1-2 shift and how tricky it is to do smoothly. I felt humbled trying to figure out wtf is wrong with me, but then found the forums littered with threads and posts experiencing the same issues and attributing it to a number of engineering designs BMW chose for the clutch, such as a clutch delay valve, a slow-ish throttle response (first gen drive by wire system in this car), and some other stuff. So the best 1-2 shifts usually require wee bit of slip when bringing the clutch back up when driving leisurely and slowly. Which I'm not use to, having driven MT Audis and Nissans, where basically...if you shift before the tach drops too low, you're fine.
So there are definitely some quirks to this gearbox that felt a little underwhelming to me and would require getting use to. :\
I remember driving my friend's 335i 6MT and it was a much better driving experience as far as the 1-2 shift goes.
I'm looking for 370Zs again, as well. I found one that's a carbon copy of mine...but it has an accident on file

100% guarantee it needs new bushings (the shifter). Just get a solid short throw kit, and you'll be golden. Gotta keep in mind this is a 15+ year old car, and a lot of little things like that aren't usually kept up on by the owners. One of the first things you'll likely want to do, besides fix the shifter, is do a suspension refresh on every part that is worn out. Might just be bushings, could be everything including control arms.
If you're not comfortable taking a look for yourself and deciding, get cozy with a local german specialist.
370s are awesome too though.
You could always look at BRZs too. /troll
Regarding the 1-2 shift, I have no idea how similar it is to mine, but for me, 1 is insanely tall. I can legitimately just let the clutch out and the car goes. If I were out to drive as smoothly as possible, I'd just start in 2nd. Because 1st is so tall, and 2nd is also tall, it jerks pretty hard without slipping or just shifting super early.

My very good friend knows E46 Ms like the back of his hand.
But yeah, they did mention the bushings need to be redone. As does the much of the suspension, as you mentioned.
I didn't get to rev the car out, so not sure about how tall gearing is. But with the torque of your V8, letting out the clutch is par for course. On the M3 with its high revving-lower torque, it was fairly easy (tons easier to clutch out and roll, as opposed to my 370Z), but still require some very mild throttle application to get going.
Btw, the floor mat has this awful little hump in the center of it and my leg got caught on it as I was coming off the clutch the first time. Horrible design. If it were my car, I'd take that mat right out.

By reilo Go To PostI actually just got through watching that last night before I saw your link here. Anytime Henry Catchpole does a video I am probably going to watch it because I think he's one of the best in the business. Although this is a pretty low key review of the RS5 I think Henry sees what Audi is trying to do with it (it seems to be a highly capable GT car) and appreciates it for what it is.
My only complaint is, why no dual clutch gearbox? Neither the RS4 or the RS5 have the option of the dual clutch but instead make do with the ZF 8 speed that can be found in everything these days. That 8 speed ZF is a great automatic, one of the best around, but with the VW group having access to both Audi Sport and Porsche and their fantastic dual clutch gearboxes I am genuinely surprised that you can't get one in the RS4 or RS5.
Just to update some of you:
The M3 who's VIN I posted a few posts ago: had an accident on it AND had it's odometer rolled back in the most comical way possible. Showed Reilo the Carfax, we had a fucking laugh.
Next, I saw a sad looking M3 near my area with no price at a Honda dealer. 130K miles, though. But I inquired because why not. They told me straight up the car has a transmission issue and that it's an SMG, it's $8000. The car pops out of gear, which is one of two things: the SMG pump is dead or the relay is bad. Relay is a cheap $20 fix - it's just a big fuse. If that's it, you're on the way.
If it's the pump, well that's about 1000-1400 to fix at an indie shop. Either way, since I'd be converting this car to a manual, the SMG pump needs to get dumped anyway. But anyway, I looked at the car today. Gaudy ass chrome wheels, the front bumper looks like factory, but it's def a replica and the front was repainted at some point. Cheap eBay LED corner lights and taillights, and some kind of an exhaust. Body looked alright apart from a ding, but the sunroof was sunken in a little bit, which is a concern. Idk if it wasn't closed properly, because I walked onto the lot without anyone. I walked into the showroom first and no one was there to greet me, so I just walked until I found it.
Anyway, both cars are a no go.
I'm still hoping I'll find a 370Z I'd rather have, instead.

Got an LED headlight conversion for the car, installed it today. Color temperature is still off from the fog/DRL lights though. Lame. Better light output though, so it’s not a total loss.
Only way I know to fix it would be to get the DRL units from a Cayman GTS but that probably means swapping the whole bumper I’d guess. Grumble

So I learned today that the BMW M2 only has a 13.5 gallon fuel tank. For a car that can very easily get sub 20 miles to the gallon when driven hard (I've seen several reports of 17 - 18 mpg overall if you drive it like you mean it) that seems absurdly small. Have fun filling up every 225 miles, I guess?
As a fun car only I guess it's not a huge deal if you only pull it out on the weekends or have a short commute. But for someone like myself who's looking for an excellent daily driver that also happens to be fun and sophisticated it's a bit of an achilles heel. My commute is 50 miles round trip and that's if I don't go anywhere else. Why oh why wouldn't BMW either up the standard tank size or offer the option of a larger tank? At least with Porsche on the 718 cars you can spec a 16.9 gallon fuel tank for relatively little money.
When you start seriously thinking about spending $50k, $60k, $70k or more on your next ride little things like this suddenly start to become much more important. At least to me they do.

And while Doug seems to think they won't be reliable over time I don't necessarily agree with that. Mitsubishi's as a whole may not be Toyota reliable but they are still Japanese made and fairly low tech so there isn't a lot of fancy stuff to break.
By matmanx1 Go To PostSo I learned today that the BMW M2 only has a 13.5 gallon fuel tank.

Funny, because my neighbor was saying the same thing about his M2 after we took our cars through some twisties.
I imagine it's a packaging thing. The car is pretty small. Looks like 235s have the same thing.
And speaking of fuel, was reading a few M3 and 370Z threads about gasoline, and was astounded by how many forum "enthusiasts" fill up with 89 or 87. Like, what the fuck?

Agree. I know mitsubishi seem to be the brand to shit on, but I still see a lot of older models on the road here. Plus with the mirage, there's not even that much stuff on it to break.
