Absolutely the right call to have a more complex Joel. The pay off when he unleashes will be sugar.
And Pascal is on such a roll.

They're building up to the ending so well.
very good direction and cinematography in this episode.
great character moments. love joel finally opening up.
think this was the best episode yet from an objective point of view.

It'll be interesting to see how they balance the ending.
In the game everything felt justified to me, but I feel like they are going to really sauce things up such that we have a sense that maybe Joel went a bit too far. I haven't played the most recent remake.

It's going to spark a lot of discussion online from people who didn't play whether they would have done the same or not.

Kathleen foreshadowed the ending in her monologue just before dying. She told Henry she understood why he did what he did but that kids die all the time. Life doesn’t revolve around him and his brother.
The first story is a moral question but the only thing Joel did wrong is not let Ellie decide IMO. Fuck everyone else. They’re all awful.
The second is about revenge and losses people are willing to take in search of it

By bud Go To Postdirected by jasmila zbanic. will have to check out some of her stuff.I knew the episode was in good hands as soon as her name popped up. Gorgeous hour of television, the DOP earned his / her / their keep.
As I see it, Kathleen's storyline is the show's only blunder so far.
Great episode and incredible performances by Pedro & Bella.
Kind of weird how few infected there are in this. Like, I get it - no terminator Joel. But you would be forgiven for thinking that they are just.. not really a factor. Fungal networks that we see once and never again, driven underground in cities (???), not in any random buildings or the countryside. Even Bill seemed to live in bliss for decades.
The games, especially the second, had a great underlying tension that kind of feels missing imo.

Agreed. Don’t need more gore.. Need more infected interactions
The bloater suit allegedly cost 500k to make, which seems crazy to me. So maybe it was in part a costs saving decision, heh.
The way they're building up Ellie and Joel's relationship ... I hope they're prepared for the toxic fallout when what has to happen in S2 happens.
People are gonna go absolutely fucking nuclear. By the time we get there ... I reckon it's gonna hit way harder than the Red Wedding did.

I’m actually surprised there’s so few spoilers for non gaming viewers. Nobody in my office has a fucking clue lol.
Ellie absolutely foreshadowed the end game two as well when she told Sam what she fears most.

I think one of the big issues is that it's hard to create real tension with only two protagonists. You know they are basically "safe" in every encounter, guaranteed. So better to only focus on them for specific beats.
By domino Go To PostLast two eps have been good Ellie epsNext two are going to be Ellie focused too.
I wonder if the Ashley Johnson cameo will be the cold open this week.
Watched episode 5 and thought it was easily the weakest, so very surprised to see it being the highest rated. Henry and Sam was a good story line, way too often interrupted with dragged out and boring Kathleen.
But the real stinker was that whole sniper fight and the big boi coming out of the ground was..Just quite bad.

its definitely an adaptation of the last of us...i assume people with no familiarity to the video game are enjoying this way more
Greatly enjoyed the first 3 episodes, thought ep 4 and 5 were mid overall, ep 6 brought it back for me.
I just think it’s very entertaining. It’s not prestige storytelling, but the games aren’t either lol. It’s a 6/10 story with 8/10 characters and 10/10 gameplay. It loses something as an adaptation because you’re losing its best quality, but you’ve got some charismatic actors and HBO production value and it’s a very solid show.
Nothing special, it’s not the Sopranos or Deadwood or whatever. But I guess I wasn’t expecting it to be anything more than it is.

First Last of Us, as much as I love the game, isn't really all that interesting.
Part 2 will make for much better TV imo.

Slightly better than the two ones before this one, at least. But big drop in quality from the first few episodes still.
Also isn't the shaky camera kind of comical at times? I get it when there's action or a lot of movement. But when it's just showing a calm moment between two characters or something, it feels a bit weird, that it looks like lars von trier filmed it.

Outside of here the episode seems to be loved.
I don’t think I cared for this episode all that much.
Cute little character moments and all… but I don’t think it amounted to much more than that. Maybe Left Behind could have been told as a couple of flash backs within the context of larger episode.
n8 is right (but was wrong about Moyes).

DLC was pretty cool back in the day and it was great to see it in live action
Also more Boston 😎🤪
Every episode has been great, season is blowing by too

By Yurtlicious Go To PostThe gays couldnt save it this time ?It was a very good adaptation of The Left Behind DLC. We got some really nice stuff regarding the FEDRA community that Ellie was a part of prior to the start of this shows story.
That was great and Bella went to work. I felt it when she realized what had happened. Can’t believe how stupidly wrong I was about her.
The screenplay is not brilliant to be honest
And Joel doesn't murder nearly enough people as in the video game imho

Lyanna Mormont been a star. All they need for season 2 is to get her some of Robert Downey jr lifts, and some crossfit.

The fact that they are still casting literal men as Abby in the official reddit as a form of hatred shows how demented parts of the fanbase are. It's probably the most toxic fandom thing I've seen ever tbh.

She's got a chance to win some awards in Part 2. Her transformation is going to be something else and this episode proved she has the chops once and for all.

They got some ground to cover in the next two episodes and a lot of it violent. Curious how they’ll set the tone for David
Sitting here in bed just thinking about the show. I don’t have many complaints, I think they’ve done a great job so far.
Guess this is gonna follow the GoT E9 style where 90% of the vfx budget is spent. At least I hope so, cuz there’s been like 30 seconds of a Clicker and maybe 1 minute of the other infected
Also confused as to what they’re doing with Joel. These last few episodes really gotta drive home the point harder that he’s not a good person. They keep mentioning it. How he and Tess used to kill people all the time, how he was willing to risk his brothers life while his wife is pregnant.
Despite that, my wife and my brother still think he’s a likeable character. As it stands right now, I wouldn’t play Abby for anything less than a billion per episode. That hate that person is gonna get isn’t worth anything less

I'm hoping for minority Abby, lets get the computers putin and make her Abisha and muslim, her friends call her Abby to make her feel more American and she secretly hates it.
I actually think they’ve done a good job with Joel. A lot of the attachment the game provides is that you play as him; he’s a bit of a non-character for the most part, and becomes infinitely more interesting when he’s humanised in Part 2.
I think the show’s done a good job of beginning to come to the point where Joel would do ANYTHING to save Ellie - given Sarah flashbacks, his fear of getting her killed like he said to Tommy in Jackson, and I think the show has also done a better job of providing camaraderie between the two. Sure, Joel isn’t perceived as the bloodthirsty killer he is in Pt1 VG, but he’s clearly someone who will do what he has to. That’s only going to be clearer when Ellie saves his life in the winter section.

Nobody is purely good in a post apocalyptic world. Those people die off first lolol
People like Joel because he’s doing right by Ellie and empathize with his loss. The entire coming moral dilemma and subsequent second game depend on this.
Abby will be #1 hated person ever but if I remember correctly people were upset at having to play her character too lol.

Do you guys reckon there's any chance of the ending deviating much from the game? Assuming it doesn't, it'll be interesting to see if there's any difference in the debate around it. People still talk about it quite a lot, and the game is like ten years old.
Hopefully when part 2 comes around the TV audience is capable of looking at the bigger picture, rather than a huge section of it just throwing their toys out the pram. The bullshit surrounding Abby started off stupid, and has been fucking shameful ever since.
