By HonestVapes Go To PostGlad to see 2230 M.2 drives have come down so much. Got a 512GB 3400/3000MB/s drive for 40 quid last night.Where from lad?
When I looked last year, they were over £100. 1TB was £180-200.
Gonna open it up tomorrow night and and go about the Windows install.
By Lego Go To PostTo be fair I have done that once or twice
i had to do it, when they got warm during lost judgement.
SSD swap done on the LCD Steam Deck. 64GB to 512GB. Followed the ifixit video on YouTube and it was really easy to do. Tempted to get a 2TB drive for my OLED Deck now, but probably won’t.
Creating a Windows 11 boot drive now for the LCD model. Should be back up and running within a couple hours.

Windows 11 installed and all works surprisingly well, even without the drivers installed yet. Wifi, touchpad and touchscreen all function fine right away, thankfully.
Getting the on screen keyboard up is a pain so far but I’m pretty sure I know a way to solve that later.

Everything running as it should now. Tried out Fortnite on DX12. Horrendous shader stutter to start but after a few games it’s much better. Stable 60 seemingly, aside from the odd shader related stutter.
Definitely would not want to use Windows as the main OS for a Deck though. It seemingly runs well, boots fast. Just feels really clunky for using Steam/Big Picture mode. BPM is really sluggish compared to the front end used on Steam OS. Not ideal at all.
Cool as a side machine though. I’d even consider dual booting Windows on my OLED once it’s officially supported.

Thanks for the trip report!
Seems about what I expected, other than BPM being sluggish. If the Deck was my only device, I’d definitely dual boot it.
Wait, can you have the dual boot entirely on an SD card? I think you can… that way, you can just slap it in when you want to play a Windows game that is on the same card.

You can but apparently Windows really hammers SD cards and shortens their lifespan. The performance is supposedly worse too.
Seemingly works well from an external SSD, but then you’re tethered to that any time you want to use Windows.
I was sick when my OLED got delivered last month so I didn't have the energy to unbox it and set it up. With the way things have worked out, it's now a Christmas present of sorts to myself. I'll open it up on Sunday or Monday and get the thing configured. I do need to figure out tho. Maybe I'll get this: https://www.amazon.com/JSAUX-PC0104-Detachable-Accessories-Protective/dp/B0BRXHK2QL
I wouldn’t mind getting one of these. https://www.satisfye.com/products/stylthgrip. I’m hoping the extra width on the grips would make it kinder on my wrists
By Kibner Go To PostThe only add on I’ve used are some rubber bumpers for the paddles to make them easier to press.I’m pretty barebones. I’ve got a cheap USBC dongle with pass through charging, a couple USBs and HDMI out. A 512GB SD card, screen protector and that’s it.
No cases, no grips, no proper dock.
I did try a cheap silicone case because it had a more angular palm rest to it. It just felt super cheap, and it was annoying to take off/put on when I was putting the Deck back in it’s hardcase.
Well, I can definitely recommend some stick-on grips for the paddles. It makes a world of difference for actually using them easily.
I forgot that Steam includes a case with these things, LE has its own special one. I guess I can hold off on other accessories for a bit
By data Go To Postworth it for mostly playing in bed? the non-gaming functions work well?Bed is mostly where I play it, tbh. What non-gaming functions are you talking about?
By Kibner Go To PostBed is mostly where I play it, tbh. What non-gaming functions are you talking about?like youtube mostly
By data Go To Postlike youtube mostlyIt’s… fine? It’s like opening YouTube in a browser on your phone. Add-ons with modal pop up’s (like 1Password) don’t appear to work right in Gaming Mode, but that’s what Desktop Mode is for.
Some interesting results. Almost matches / beats the Series S on one or two games, but the video also suggests that the titles that have Series S versions benefits the Deck in terms of optimisations.
By HottestGrapes Go To PostBless you Series S, I always liked you for a reason.Handhelds getting popular for PC games is such a boon for optimization for all, imo. These things still have SSDs and it's not like they are holding back any kind of gameplay possibility that is only possible on stronger hardware. Making publishers allow dev teams to write code that works better on weaker platforms is a boon to everyone.
I’m just banking on the Switch being around the same performance as the deck and also fucking stupidly successful next. Like 130+ million units successful.
Force all thosecunts AAA devs to port their games to it, and hopefully those optimisations will make their way to PC handhelds too.
Force all those

Ayaneo with SteamOS coming. I believe the Steam Deck competitors not having a proper OS was one of Kibner's biggest gripes (I agree!).

Interesting. It looks like they are also trying to push a subscription model with it? Not sure about that. Need more info.
1tb OLED came in
these colors are gorgeous. Do I need to buy a screen protector? Kind of surprised it didnt come with one

I have a screen protector on the lcd deck, but none on the OLED. I bought a double pack of screen protectors with a guide to install it without air pockets. Both of them had marks on the glass protector though, so I just fucked the idea off completely.
Sadly not. You can transfer games from your PC over to it though. I’ll download games overnight then transfer them over to the SD.
By data Go To PostIt can't download games while asleep? You can in desktop mode
Played some steamdeck at a friends. Amazed how smooth Baldurs Gate 3 runs on it.
If it was cheaper, I could see myself getting one for indie games.

Played a round of Deep Rock on this. It runs exceptionally well but I can't imagine playing an FPD ( esp one with this much verticality) or a fast paced boomer shooter on this thing
By Freewheelin Go To PostYou can in desktop modeHow btw? I thought the closest way was to set it to timeout the display in desktop mode.

I sincerely apologise for typing this name out and making you read it, but here goes. I bought a Satisfye STYLTHGRIP.
I’ve been looking for something that adds a bit of girth and shape to the sides of the deck. This seemed to be the best match for me, judging from the pictures.
It’s doesn’t angle the grip as outwards as I would’ve liked. It does add some good bulk to the sides though. Definitely an improvement in comfort. Seems obscenely expensive for what is effectively just some moulded plastic and a screen protector though.
On that note, I’m happy with it but I hesitate to recommend it due to the price. Unless you suffer similar discomfort as me and for the same reasons, in which case I would recommend it.

Modding Oblivion on Linux because I’m nostalgic masochist. I’m sorry, Kibner. I fuxking hate Linux when it comes to things like this. It’s just so obtuse compared with to Windows.
1000 orens for whoever knows how tf to install the 4GB patch for Oblivion through Linux.
I have Bottles installed. I am struggling

It’s just so obtuse compared with to Windows.Linux stinks when you are trying to get non-Linux software on it working or when trying to use hardware that doesn't have quality official drivers. Outside of that, it's pretty fucking great.
But it truly is awful for trying to setup a modded version of Oblivion. It doesn't look like Lutris is much help with this one. I haven't messed with Bottles and Wine much so I can't really help you there. I remember them being a bit confusing last time I looked.

By Kibner Go To PostI found this on YouTube. I have not watched it. Maybe it helps you, maybe it doesn't:That’s the guide I’ve followed thus far, which tbf, has been straight forward enough.
I’m now to the point of running the 4GB patcher on the Oblivion.exe via Bottles. That isn’t covered in the video. In the process of typing this message, I actually managed to do it after probably an hour of fucking around with things. Hey ho.
And sadly for anyone else who may attempt this, The method of how I managed this successfully went through my head as if it were a sieve.
