By Smokey Go To PostA headhunter reached out to me for a role at a hedge fund that is such a significant amount of money I'm wondering if it's a scam. I always look up and try and find out info on who reaches out and so far, it checks out. The amount of money thrown around in Finance / Quant / Hedge is incredible.
Had the meeting. Base salary would be a big jump even at the low end, bonuses are equivalent to base, only work in office 3x a week.
lol
Jesal pls

Honestly, I've found it refreshing, but I definitely know not every firm out there is the same. I'd do some recon on whether the culture at the place is any good. KidJr might know too, he helped when I was sorting through the firms that had contacted me.

My guy!!
The idea that you need to grind 60-80 hours to make big money has always been a lie lol
Plenty of people in white collar jobs show up for less than 40 hours and bring in $500k/yr
A lot of them might be your bosses and bosses' bosses

everyone i know that makes biiig money either works 40h a week or works 40h a week and pretends to work for another 20h.
I'm trying to work less and earn more. To do that, I need to automate a lot of my job so that I can spend more time honing my data analysis talents. I believe it can be done, but who here would be good to talk to about that? Or at least point me in the right direction? I learned a little bit of SQL last year, and I'm currently still learning the language and how to use it. I imagine to automate tasks I would need to write something in Python?
Yea, that's the rough overarching gist of it.
You're looking to learn how to run a cron that either does it on a cadence or reacts to data changes. The former is a lot easier than the latter and requires less integration.
Performance will be important with data in/data out. You probably want to ingest and transform the data to be able to more effectively transform it. If in Python, look at pandas: https://pandas.pydata.org/

Any and every language is used in automation.
SQL is good for learning how to process data in a query language.
C and non-object-oriented C-based languages are good languages to learn to process data using a procedural language.
JS is a good language to learn how to process data in an almost functional language.
The common theme is that you are going to be processing data. What language you use is more of a matter of where the data is sourced from and what is available on the system that will be doing the data processing.
There are a million languages out there and there are reasons to use some over others for particular purposes. They are all just tools in what should be an ever-expanding toolbox.
There are also just a bunch of automation tools out there where you don't really learn a language as much as a protocol or format to do some automation. In Azure Pipelines, you do a lot of automation using .yaml configuration files. Not even a language, at all.
e: and yeah, cron jobs, scheduled tasks, triggers, listeners, etc. would all be things that kick off your automation process

I guess to summarize my point (since it was mostly just me typing just to type), automation can be split into two parts:
- what kicks off the automation? (cron job, etc., like in Reilo's post and my previous post)
- what does the automation do?
That second part is the thing that you seem to be wanting to learn more about how to do, right? What you use to accomplish this is ever changing. Python is a fine language to use and can teach some good habits but you will need/want to expand your skillset/toolset as you get more experienced and need to solve different problems on different systems with different data sources.

new director already ruined my year 18 days into him having the job. guess it was too good to be true thinking i could just coast to a bag this year after the absolute grind of a last 18 months it's been cleaning up the absolute shitshow I inherited when I started. we're just gonna give away 30% of my accounts to a total noob and hope things go well. they wont.
sometimes i think they forget that while i've been here 18 months i've been doing this for 10 years. it aint easy at all i just make it look like it is.

these layoffs just a reminder that unions should be necessary, so many people here got laid off without warning just an email at the beginning of day

If you want to blame someone, blame the federal reserve for the state of economy.
Absolute careless of printing trillions of dollars for inflation to get as bad as it was in the 70s. and not to mention their half baked ideas of decreasing interest rates during the pandemic. We're going to have a hard landing in the latter part of the year with even more job cuts

By domino Go To Postwhat were yall takeaways from that? It's not earned it's given based on some incomprehensible criteria.
By domino Go To Postwhat were yall takeaways from that?bet on yourself, you don't need everyone to like you just the right people to love you, fuck linear career progression entirely, everything is actually logistics, etc
and more than anything else you just get away from crowds happy with circling the drain or stagnation. people get stuck, then rationalize it, then years fly by and its over.

By DY_nasty Go To Posti think you know my upwards path better than most. my moral grey area isn't quite tainted enough to go full scumbag and truly ascendYea, none of these dudes played it safe nor cared about what wake they left in their path.
HOWEVER, some do have a change of conscience later in life and switch it up but most of them love to live on that grey area and depending on the industry they'll go full Sith if need be.
