By toku Go To PostIf it makes y'all feel any better apparently this is widely agreed upon as the worse book but that next season is gonna be better and a lot more interesting. Apparently we're getting way way more Amos as well. Apparently the book felt more like a bottle episode than a full book and Murtry's character was one dimensional.Wouldn't say the worst one.
It's just different.
I haven't seen S4 yet, but I've read every book. So I dunno where it ends and how drastic the changes are. Usually they're quite small.
Despite the huge universe and those 3 factions alongside many more things, it was still relatively small because we barely scratched the surface of alot of things.
Now we've had the first 3 seasons that all build upon another and followed a specific target with alot of twists and turns.
S4 and the book are an entirely different focus. It's just a small sample of what's coming with all those new universes and planets.
It's like a small intermission. Focus on exploration, the new world and baggages from the old world that collide. Something that will play a role in the future on a different scale.
S5 will feel a bit more familiar with a huge thing happening that will throw alot of people off the rails.
S6 on the other hand will continue with the consequences of S5 alongside some things that occured in both S5 and S4.
Basically the focus is constantly changing after S3. I've really enjoyed that instead of just putting the focus on the same issues over and over again.
And yes, we'll get alot more Amos. Basically everyone will get a bigger focus alongside some new characters that will play a huge role. And we'll also see some familiar characters again.
Watchmen wew, OK.
I did never intend to watch it, but I guess I'm glad I did now. It was pretty good. From the beginning I only ever expected it to do one thing, which was to show that the writers asked themselves some questions about the events of the comic book (primarily the ending) and put some thought into answering them regardless of whatever story-line they wanted to tell. Big task I know, doing the bare minimum to pretend there is a basic narrative link to the original work beyond taking a recognizable brand and filling a slot...
Well, fuck, they did that. They asked some questions, they answered them, they told a story, they interwove characters and themes working as an extension of the original work, they even found the time to mimic the storytelling devices and even transformed them using decidedly cinematic techniques instead of comic book structural imitations. It even managed to trigger and piss "the original comic book fans" off for all the good reasons, which is always appreciated.
Do we actually owe Lindelof an apology now? And no, The Leftovers doesn't count.

By /sy Go To Postsaid nobody, ever.
At the onset of 2019, the end of Game of Thrones, and specifically how HBO would carry on without it, was deemed to be the defining story of the year. “Game of Thrones’ series finale is approaching. How will HBO survive after it?” asked the Los Angeles Times; “winter is finally coming for HBO,” Variety declared. For years, the premium cable network had triumphed—critically and commercially—on the wings of Thrones’ dragons, as the show turned into a sun around which everything else revolved. So industry watchers assumed that the galaxy would collapse in on itself without its center of gravity.PSY wrong as usual
By reilo Go To PostThat was a great finale of Watchmen.
I have to do a full mea culpa on Lindelof.
"How is HBO gonna survive after GoT ends" they said.
this doesn't make sense if you were talking about ratings, reilo. aint nobody watching watchmen.
Watchmen's ratings went up almost every episode
The first episode of S2 is going to be midseries GoT level numbers at this point. WoM and general hype

Watchmen also reinforced my idea that Fallout would be the best thing on TV with competent writers (basically no Bethesda involved).
I wish we had a decent method for HBO shows over here.
HBO series are tied to SKY Germany, which is a huge pain in the ass and expensive as fuck.
Shame that they're a rival to Netflix. Would love their stuff on there..

HBO not going to look at that money on the table without salivating
If Lindelof didn't have anything in mind after S1 though I'm expecting a huge quality dropoff

By Lupercal Go To PostWhat about HBO GO ?Nope.
Could use a proxy/VPN for HBO nordic, but can't be bothered with that. Shame that they got it for north europe, but they're using Sky for their content in Germany.
HBO has a streaming service here. 4.99€ a month, all the HBO content, some from WB, DC Universe and Hulu Originals. No 4K though.
Some of my favorite older hbo series didn't actually have good ratings and became bigger hits post their initial release. Some even cancelled. Got closure on Deadwood at least. Carnivale ain't getting that. The Wire wasn't a big hit either come to think of it and it's one of the most critically acclaimed series of all time.
Have to say Euphoria was up there for me this year. It's a show that hasn't really left my head since watching it.

Never did watch them I'm afraid.
By Facism Go To Postskins was that series about trash teenagers wasn't it?Aye.
By Zabojnik Go To PostThe Witcher is up on Netflix m8s.Incredible hangover tv
The Witcher's first 10 minutes was... CW tier. It looked like it was done on a set without anything to make it seem more expansive.
Definitely liked it more and more as it went on though.

EW watched the first episode, skipped to episode 5, say they hated it and gave it a 0.

By Lunatic Go To PostWell since I'm a gamer I will like it.It's based on the books though.
Ok, episode 4 and I'm fully in. Henry Cavill seemed one note at first but they gave him more to work with later.
By Pennywise Go To PostWhich character? The girl in the first episode that leads our boy Gerry to the wizard

only watched one episode. but yeah, seems a bit shit.

The Witcher is entertaining, only complaint is that the sets are too clean/new looking and the lighting is too bright at times and throws off scenes.
Yeah I love it. Some obvious problems like you said, and it takes a while for things to gel.
Better than Expanse season 1 I reckon, that has some similar problems

The Witcher was ok. Cavill is an excellent Geralt and the relationship between he and Jaskier/Dandelion is written well. Action bits are done well too.
But the plotting is shit. There's a ton of jumping back and forth between different periods in time which is never properly explained. In shows like Westworld that's fine because the lack of signposting is part of the plot. But that's not the case in the Witcher. They also try to cram in too much of the story. In the space of 30 minutes Geralt meets Yennefer and then makes his last wish to save her life and bind their fates together. That was the plot of a 200 page book which is dispensed in half an episode. Just really weird.
