It is likely a worse performer in games than any other current gen consumer cpu that costs more than $200 because of the lower clockspeeds.
By Zabojnik Go To Post4080 running at 40°C / 240fps in Apex, sensational.Mashallah.
Have barely used mine yet lol
By inky Go To PostTo counter Zabo's eliteness I just bought a Thermalright Peerless AssassinGreat cooler, it was in contention a couple of weeks ago when I was deciding whether to keep the Mesh or switch to a bigger box, just in case I decided to ditch the AIO. For no reason whatsoever, really, as this EK-AIO 280 has been running flawlessly and noiselessly so far.
$40 cooler >
Need to pick a new cooler, and seems like the market for 280mm AIO's is a mess at the moment. Everything of note seems to be out of stock. Maybe it's time for air :/
By Kibner Go To PostOr a custom loop. 😈Definitely don't have that in me (as fun as it sounds). The AIO on my GPU is doing a pretty great job
(I know you said that isn't on the table, earlier)
Is the Noctua D15 still the air cooler of choice?

Yeah pretty much. There’s a couple coolers with identical performance to it but I don’t think either have such an easy mounting system as Noctua’s.
Deepcool Assassin III and the BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 are the others.
Nice. Ordered. They're about the same price as the refund I'm getting for the AIO, but those AIOs are now more than double in price if they're ever in stock
Sold the 3080 for 500€. Probably 50-100€ less than what I could get, if I had any patience for dealing with the horde of lowballing cunts that usually respond to this kind of ads over here, but considering I got it for MRSP at a time when it was going for twice that, I'm feeling alright.
Really does highlight the outrageous pricing of the 4000 series though. Fucking Jensen. And fuck me for proving him right.

By s y Go To PostCan you easily pirate software on macs?Yeah, relatively easily. Can’t say I’ve done it in a few years but it used to be real simple
Got sent the Chromax D15 instead on the beige because they were out of stock, which is nice.
Installation was easy enough, bar being a little tight against the GPU and needing to remove it to slot the fans in.
Temps are very good, about 60c under a Cinebench run.
Only issue I have now is that I've got two top mounted fans running as intake, but playing around with them, they're not really doing much for (or against) the temps.
Radiator is front mounted with two push intakes, an exhaust at the back.
That said, temps all round are good so I'm not too worried, but I wonder if running the tops as exhausts too might help a bit more

I’d remove the top fans.
Running front intake & multiple top exhaust can negatively impact CPU temps when air cooling. Running top intake doesn’t really benefit much.
Keep it simple with front intake, rear exhaust. Front to back airflow. If you feel fancy, one extra exhaust fan at the top above the CPU cooler, but not multiple along the top.

Ah that's fair. I figured since I didn't have any clean air coming in that I'd need some, but it's clearly not doing anything as intake.
By JesalR Go To PostAh that's fair. I figured since I didn't have any clean air coming in that I'd need some, but it's clearly not doing anything as intake. It's all fluid dynamics stuff. You want as few "bends" in the air flow as possible.

By no clean air, is that because your GPU’s radiator is at the front of the case? Because that’s really not an issue at all. The air flowing through the radiator isn’t significantly warmer than ambient.
In practice it’s not that different from having an air cooled GPU expelling heat into the case. The heat load is the same.

Whee, numbers and some dry humor: https://chipsandcheese.com/2023/05/07/cyberpunk-2077s-path-tracing-update/
Currently playing CP2077 with path tracing, 15h in. It's both vastly superior to ray tracing and not quite there as a full-time substitute. Looks amazing in some areas, while others clearly need a lighting pass to bring visibility / brightness to acceptable levels.
Some of it falls on the less than stellar HDR implementation, which requires a fair amount of tweaking and outside help (reshade).
Still, overall, very, very impressive indeed.

Has Asus fallen off the wagon?
edit: GN also posted this:
"Our 'Scumbag ASUS' video is up -- not relating to the Ally. We want to note also that ASUS emailed us last week after Part 1 of exploding CPUs - an unprompted email - and asked if they could fly out to our office this week to meet with us about the issues and speak "openly." We told them we'd be down for it but that we'd have to record the conversation. They did say they wanted to speak openly, after all. They haven't replied to us for 5 days. So... ASUS had a chance to correct this. We were holding the video to afford that opportunity. But as soon as we said "sure, but we're filming it because we want a record of what's promised," we get silence. Wanting to comment on something and provide a statement is not only fine, but encouraged; we're always happy to provide that opportunity. See: Newegg interview with the executives. However, we're not going to let it be done without accountability and in the shadows. They could have done this the right way."

I'm sure there are other, smaller companies that can make the same claim, but none that are mainstream.
Everything MSI I've owned has died (2 gpus, 1 mobo).
Gigabyte has always been fine, if extremely budget feel. Of course I've never bought a GB PSU and I know they've had big issues with those, and also Mobos underreporting voltages

Speaking of ASUS hardware
It’s not rocket science: Both the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally have the same battery capacity of 40 watt-hours. You probably know that means they can run at 40 watts for a single hour — or 20 watts for two hours, 10 watts for four hours, and so on. Except that, with the ROG Ally, four hours looks like the best you can bargain for. With the Steam Deck, the best-case scenario is closer to seven.https://www.theverge.com/23719210/asus-rog-ally-review

I’m currently using a Gigabyte board and it has been good to me so far. Motherboards are completely hit and miss from one product to the next though. Like ASRock have made some of the very best boards in a given generation, yet also some of the very worst.
The first PC I fully built by myself had an e8400 processor, an 8800 GT and a Gigabyte board and it was a banger, so I just kept going with what worked. Stuff like ASRock and ASUS were harder to import as well. EVGA I've only had 1 card and that was good.
I will say that ASRock is the motherboard brand you look at first when you are trying to find something with very niche combination of features. They are mad lads.

It’s actually much worse than I anticipated on all fronts. The face buttons sticking def wasn’t on my bingo card

The CPU in it does seem quite good though. Seen some emulation benchmarks that are a real improvement over the Deck, both at 15w.
VRR is a great addition too.
It’s just as a whole package, it flops for me. The price, the battery life, no sleep functionality and the Asus software. Tbh, the price alone makes the device unjustifiable for me.
£700 for a portable PC, I could buy a PS5 and a Switch Lite for that money. Or a PS5 and a Series S. Or two Steam Decks.

Oh yeah, speaking of shit manufacturers, MSI's driver and bios signing keys have been leaked. So, uhh, be careful out there: https://thehackernews.com/2023/05/msi-data-breach-private-code-signing.html
I think it is also related to some recent Intel leak, too.

I believe the leak only affects MSI laptops and .. also don't be trying to update your BIOS from anywhere but directly from the manufacturer.

Sure you can get the 400 steam deck one but would have to lash out for storage then too.

By Smokey Go To PostWhat’s the tl;dr of this stuff with Asus
Their quality has gone downhill in recent years apparently:
*z690 hero boards with backwards capacitor catching fire and Asus trying to keep quiet about it until having to do the recall.
*Asus putting voltages too high on the AM5 boards, then pulling all old bioses off their own website and putting up beta bioses, but saying if you use the beta bios to avoid exploding CPUs then it voids your warranty.
*Asus sending Jay and customers RMA'd motherboards with bent cpu pens or other weird defects out of the box as new products.
*Asus having a snobby attitude when you try to deal with their customer service or reps. Also, Asus customer service being slow/crap in general.
*Asus trying to give Reddit users free products if they don't send their exploding cpus and motherboards to Steve for analysis.
*Asus contacting Gamers Nexus to meet and discuss the issues, but when Steve asks to record the conversation they stop responding.
*Asus slow to add Rebar support to their z490 mobos a few years ago and not adding it for z390 mobos when other companies were.
*Jay and customers experiencing weird stability issues with Asus motherboards (like audio randomly stop working or usb issues or blue screens), then switching to another brand out of frustration (like AsRock) and then having a flawless experience.
