Serves me right for not following earlier in the discussion. Carry on!
By Kibner Go To PostBeing able to play Diablo 2: Resurrected anywhere in the house with the Steam Deck is so damn nice.
e: considering lowering the frame rate to like 40 fps, though, because it drains battery like nothing else. lmao less than 3 hours
By Kibner Go To PostYeah, changing the refresh rate to 40hz increased the battery life in that game from under 3 hours to more than 4 hours without as large a drop in smoothness and responsiveness as I was expecting. Glad I picked that tip up in some random DF video.
Are you lowering the TDP also? Limiting to 40hz, locking the TDP and even locking the GPU clockspeed all compound together for better battery life.
Also do you have Decky Loader installed?
By HonestVapes Go To PostAre you lowering the TDP also? Haven't messed with the GPU clocks. That's probably too much fucking with things for me. lol

Your post had me look up what Decky Loader is. It doesn't look like something I would bother with unless there is a killer app that I need to have. In general, I don't want to have to tinker with the Steam Deck much beyond getting it to run emulators and non-Steam apps. At least, not right now.

That's probably too much fucking with things for me. lolI wouldn’t call it a must have, but there’s a plugin for Decky Loader called ProtonDB badges. It just adds an icon to every game in your library to let you know if they’re playable or not and to what extent on a bronze to platinum scale. Clicking the icon will also take you to the Proton forum for the game with user feedback on each title.

It’s a nice QoL uplift and covers a lot more games than Valve’s own verified badges.
Besides that, I use a plugin for a custom dark theme and custom boot up videos.
Loving the Steam Deck, I've probably messed around with it more than I've actually played games on it :lol

I know pleb cards don't matter in here, but I'm really concerned about the erosion of the mid-tier level cards. 3060Ti was basically never sold at MSRP (400€/$) but rather with a markup of about 15-35% which is already ridiculous.
Now if Nvidias plan is to clear old stock, at what price point is a 4060 going to release? And when?
Although this seems like the worst time ever to get an old 3000 series card I'm really considering it now. I'm stuck with team green due to my E9 OLED as primary display and it only supporting GSync and no FreeSync and really think the 300-400€ price point will stay dead with the new GPU generation.
In other news: Black Friday prices for WD Black 850X are insane. Amazon dropping it to 99€/TB 190€/2TB. Already got a 980pro but I'm considering it.
Anybody in here running 2 NVMes on a X570 board? Anything to keep in mind?

No one knows what price point a 4060 is going to release and no one knows what the performance tier of it will be. Nvidia has been changing what xx60, xx70, etc. means (in regards to performance tiers) lately. People are predicting that maybe a summer 2023 release for the xx60 series, but that isn't anything solid. Nvidia has been using the 3000 series to provide their "mid-range" cards, so far.
It is actually still a good time to get a 3000 series card, imo, since the prices have come down significantly (compared to what they were) and they are still fantastic performers unless you need true 4k or something. Even the 3060ti can do 1080p 240+ fps, iirc.
I have 2 nvme's on a x570 board. Just read your manual to see if they are connected to the CPU or the chipset. Usually, it's one each. You may also lose some SATA slots using the second nvme slot since they often use the same pcie lanes. You will want your most performance critical drive connected to the CPU. Usually, this will be your OS drive since it calls small, random files far more than any game does.

By bacon Go To PostI'm at a complete loss I can barely tell the difference between those picturesDo you not see the gap between the PCB and the connector?
From what I understand, the connector sometimes gives two very quiet clicks and some people stop pushing after the first one.
This is just third hand observation from a rando, though, so maybe not true.

By Kibner Go To PostFrom what I understand, the connector sometimes gives two very quiet clicks and some people stop pushing after the first one. That’s my assumption too, but I’ve personally never not visually confirmed that a cable is fully inserted throughout my numerous builds and rebuilds. Maybe it’s the SFFitius in me that makes me overly conscious of properly fitting things.

They really should have done the half length sense pins to start with, imo. That would solve all these safety issues, I think. Would lead to more people complaining that their card won't turn on, though.
Yeah I agree there’s definitely measures they could have taken to reduce user error. They could’ve had a m pronounced click when the cable was seated, they could’ve done as you said and had shorter sense pins that if not fully seated just not powered the card on.
That said, 50~ confirmed cases out of 100,00+ sales and the majority of that 50 have been down to the user being an absolute thicko. All the shite online in articles and on Yourube blowing all of this out of portion over the last couple months has been absolutely daft. There’s plenty of valid reasons to berate Nvidia for the 4000 series, the cable is really low on the list in my opinion.

It isn't even Nvidia's cable design! It's one from SGI so that cable standard is going to get used in lots of places. Which is why it is all the more important for a solution that doesn't rely on the user paying careful attention and wiggling the cable around to make sure it is fully seated in order to avoid potential fire hazards.
By Scum Go To PostAssuming you're going with a 3070ti and within the specified budget, I'd say look for the Samsung Odyssey G7, which comes in both 27" and 32", both can be found below £500 these days. Alternatively there's the MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD (27", 240hz, IPS) and MSI Optix MAG321QR (32").
Is around ~£600 too Brexit for one or do I need a loan from Horse?
Ultrawides, there's quite a few to choose from. MSI Optix MAG342CQR (VA panel) or MSI Optix MAG341CQ (IPS) is one option, Gigabyte G34WQC is a well-regarded budget-ish ultrawide, so is (surprisingly) the Xiaomi Mi 34".
Just know that not all games support ultrawide out of the box, some just plain don't, others require a bit of fiddling with mods, patches, that sort of stuff. Nothing major, but if you absolutely don't want to deal with that, stick with 16:9.
I kinda want to give a high refresh rate monitor a try just to see what it’s like. I wonder if it would be hard to go back to being ok with 30 fps…
By diehard Go To Postits hard going back to being ok with 60 fpscan confirm
i'm only putting up with it on the steam deck because, well, you have to compromise somewhere to get better battery life
I don’t really mind lower frame rates as long as the frame times are consistent. Unless it’s an online FPS anyway, then it needs to be 100fps+
Steam Deck playing Crysis (remastered) at 60FPS has genuinely surprised me. Only medium settings but it’s so fucking smooth with it. My old 2012 PC couldn’t run the original release this smoothly with an i5 2320 and 560Ti
I doubt anyone here would be interested, but might as well share it before my Patreon over there expires.

LG’s OLED panels are getting even smaller. With no fanfare, the company posted a product page for a new 27-inch OLED gaming monitor (model 27GR95QE-B). Reddit noticed first; then, it got picked up by TechSpot and the HDTVTest YouTube channel. It’s the company’s first OLED panel of this size that’ll deliver 1440p (QHD) resolution, an increasingly popular resolution for PC and console gamers since it’s not as demanding as 4K.QHD 😖
By Laboured Go To PostJust going to run a quick headcount on who asked for this…. nope, fucking no one. They were SO close.

I use a 75 inch now too but at a more reasonable distance in the living room. It’s not an OLED sadly either.
I'm getting an office in our new house, will whack my PC there for work + games. Hopefully pick up a good hybrid monitor if one launches in a nice size. I'm assuming this gen of QD-OLEDs aren't ever going to be too great for text?
If you have the chance, i would go look at one for myself. I can't say reading on mine bothers me at all, but for some it clearly does.
No idea if they will improve

At some point Microsoft will likely add ClearType support for newer sub-pixel layouts such as QD-OLED's, nobody knows when tho.
In other news, the cheapo speakers we use at work died, got the Logitech Z333 2.1 to replace them, should do alright. 45€.

This Philips docking monitor is one of the world’s first Thunderbolt 4 monitors that comply with the USB4 standard. Compared with traditional USB-C displays, Thunderbolt 4 technology provides 40Gbps extremely fast data transmission speed, high-definition video, multi-stream daisy chain transmission, provides up to 90W power supply for the device, and a stable 1Gbit/s Ethernet connection, all through a single cable. Thunderbolt 4 provides a slim, single-cable USB-C docking solution that can be plugged in and out at will to create a smooth and convenient desktop, which greatly improves work efficiency.
Daisy chaining allows you to drive multiple displays and devices from a single Thunderbolt port on your laptop. Connect to this monitor from the Thunderbolt port of the laptop, and then connect to the second 4K monitor from the second Thunderbolt port on this monitor.Sold
I got bored and decided to tinker with my PC. My CPU is already at it's OC limit (10700K @ 4.9ghz all core) with my cooler so I decided to focus on my videocard (evga rtx 3090 ftw3 ultra).
First I ran Unigine Heaven:
stock clocks= 77c, 77.5 fps
core undervolted to 900mv= 70c, 77.1 fps
core undervolted and oc mem +500 = 72c, 78.2 fps
core undervolted and oc mem +750 (3090Ti mem speed) = 72c, 78.7 fps
Then I decided to run my other usual benchmarks:
Stock:
3dmark firestrike = 33,197
3dmark timespy = 18,396
ff14 endwalker benchmark = 17,193
ff15 benchmark = 8,975
supersposition 1080p extreme = 12,856 @ 78c
Borderlands 3 = 86 fps
Undervolted gpu and overclocked mem:
3dmark firestrike = 33,201
3dmark timespy = 18,532
ff14 endwalker benchmark = 17,316
ff15 benchmark = 9,225
supersposition 1080p extreme = 12,259 @ 74c
Borderlands 3 = 88 fps
The core is running a few degrees cooler and the mem temps are the same (88c under full load), but fans are a little quieter than stock due to lower gpu temps. The only benchmark where the score didn't go up was Superposition (went down a little) but I guess it relies on the core more than memory.
Edit: Updated to add Borderlands 3 built-in benchmark @ 4K max settings as well

No 38" QD-OLED / miniLED ultrawide monitors on the horizon yet, but at least they're multiplying, so there's hope.

Got some toys coming:
-Asus Thor II 1000w Platinum PSU
-12x Lian Li Uni SL-Infinity fans
- MSI Trio RTX 4090

Yall thought I was really gonna sit it out until the RTX 5000 series?
