We've got the Coventry, Gaydon and Fen End Jag sites within 7 miles of our local town and 1 in every 5 people has a Jag company car. There's a bunch of F-Types, increasing numbers of I, E and F-Paces, fucking millions of XF models. A 3rd of the houses on my close have Jags parked on the driveway.
I've even got my dad's old X-Type sitting on my driveway lol
By Kibner Go To PostDo want. Would have to get a great price on my Cayman to think about being able to afford, though. We don't know pricing yet but indications are $60k starting. V6 with manual would be Cayman GT4 money -- probably cheaper.

V6 Standard or I4 DCT. The V6 doesn't get the DCT but gets a torque converter if you want automatic.

Manual everyday. I think I might spring for this in a year or two, I'll see.

The new 2 series sucks anyway.
230i is a turbo 4 at 255hp/295 ft-lb with the lame 8-speed Steptronic auto and a curb weight of 3519 pounds. Only good thing about it versus the F22 is that it has more torque(40 ft-lb more I think), everything else is essentially just standardizing the 2-series with current BMW tech.
On the bright side at least it doesn't have that fugly ass grille? 😬
Can you tell the people out there to get back to work? 😂
Heard a rumor that at least 50% of JLR dealers in America are gonna run out of inventory soon... if it hasn't happened already. I think I mentioned this before too in the last couple of months, but it seems to be really real now. We're down to single digits, and our competitors are mostly the same except for the one dealer who has two locations(coz they seem to be sharing their inventory listings).

By UkerLunatic Go To PostIsn't that because of the chip shortage?
Kinda?
They seem to have been struggling with production even before the pandemic started. Like back then, it would seem like their factories would work on Jaguar cars for a good month then switch over to LR next month, but they made enough cars that this wasn't obvious... you'd just see Jaguars show up for a month, then a month later all you'd get are LR's with no Jags in sight.
Obviously in the height of the pandemic, lockdown shutdowns and all that made it even worse but it just never seemed like they were able to recover. Even back up to December last year we never had more then 20-30 cars in our inventory when we usually average around 80-100 cars on the lot.
The chip shortage is definitely affecting everyone, but everyone else seems to be able to trickle out some cars except for JLR.
Pretty sure this is by design as Jaguar wants to sell its remaining inventory before introducing their next generation of EV cars, no?
Oh and I see the 2-Series went up in size again.
How long until BMW introduces a 0-Series? -2-Series?
EDIT: It's 4.3" longer and 2.6" wider and the xDrive weighs 3900 lbs what the fuck. 53/47 weight distribution for the xDrive? They're not even trying anymore. Fuck BMW.

Yuuuuuuup.
Back when I did that training for the new M3 and M4 a few months ago, they spent a longer time talking about that shitty 8-speed auto(the same one in the new 2s and in every upcoming BMW really) and how much better it is than the DCTs compared to talking about the manual. It basically boiled down to this one sentence: "And to appeal to our motorsport heritage, enthusiasts can also get a manual on the standard M3/M4." I'm emphasizing standard coz we cannot call them base model even those that's what it is, a base model M3/M4. 🙃
I mean I guess the manual transmission hasn't changed much in the last 20 years(hill assist and assisted rev-matching are really the only improvements afaik), but come on, at least don't leave it as a footnote of your presentation.
Possibly. But honestly I don't know, none of the people I talk to that should be "in the know" know either. I sometimes feel like I'm in the "This is fine" meme when I'm dealing with them lmao.
EDIT: Anybody here crazy enough to lease an Alfa?
Saw one earlier on the way to dinner and I just ran the numbers on Leasehackr for a Giulia Ti in Vesuvio Grey with the Nero Edizione, Premium and Performance Packages with 48 months and 15k mileage on the contract. If I sell my GTI and put that money towards the Giulia, I'd be basically paying $20 a month less than what I'm paying for my GTI right now... 😰😰😰

Oh is it the ZF8?
Well damn TIL.
But that also bothers me more now coz not once in any of the materials I've had to read for it mention that it's the ZF8, every time it's brought up it's the "8-Speed Steptronic hur dur BS".
Had I known it was the ZF8, I definitely would've written more favorable things about it in our marketing materials lmao. Every time I have to mention it I just rewrite the same line in a different way: "8-Speed Steptronic that delivers the right gear when you need it." or something along those lines.
My fault for not doing more research on it. But then again with how BMW is so cagey about it being the ZF8, I assume I can't mention the fact that it's the ZF8 either. 😐
EDIT: I just did a search for ZF on all the materials I have access to and the only time it ever comes up is in all of the Alpina cars and anything motorsport related like DTM or IMSA cars. So yeah, nothing officially from BMW themselves. 🤷🏽♂️
Well damn TIL.

BMW just brands it Steptronic, like everyone else brands theirs. But it is just the ZF in all its full glory. The only 8 speed in BMW's lineup that is NOT the ZF is the 1 series, 2 series (standard, not coupe), X1, and X2 (and Mini). Basically, all the FWD cars. Those cars use the AISIN (Toyota) gearbox, which is decent, but nothing crazy.
By reilo Go To PostThat's good to know!
Car manufacturers suck lol. Essentially you can fix the performance gap by fixing the gear ratios. Amazing. Filthy.
By reilo Go To Post
He's completely ignoring the fact that launching a manual also adds a butt load of time to a 0-60 run, compared to new wave automatics with built-in launch control that require no clutch slipping or feathering and mitigate traction issues i.e. McLaren 720S.
He also failed to mention that often times a manual car comes with a HIGHER final drive ratio that usually offsets the lower gearing of manuals. Which is the case of the 5.0 Stang, they had final drive ratios that started at 3.15 for automatics, 3.55 were optional. But the MTs had a starting ratio of 3.31 and went up as high as 3.73 with Perf Pkg (3.55 was also optional). That may not seem like a lot, but final drive (this your output speed ratio at the differential) makes a MASSIVE difference with just a few tenths. And shit, if we're talking 0-60, it's advantageous to have lower gearing like an MT so that you can hit 60 in 2 gears, as opposed to 3. Automatics that are geared high usually hit 60 in 3rd now. If manuals required an extra shift to hit 60, they'd be even slower.
We're adding more gears to autos to help MPGs, so as a result, we need to spread the engine's power output over 7-10 speeds, as opposed to 6. As a result, gearing becomes higher for the first few gears. MPGs might play some role in it, but higher gears like 1-2 don't affect MPG much at all. It's the cruising gears such as 4-8 that make the biggest impact.
Porsche 991 GT3 with MT or PDK have very minimal differences in gear ratios. Gears 1-4 are identical. 5-6 have miniscule difference. 7 is PDK only. Top speeds for both are 2kmh apart. 0-200kmh 0.4 seconds apart, all down to shifting speeds.
I can dissect this argument in many ways, but I think I've made my point. Also, when you look at 1/4 mile trap speeds on a lot of these cars, the manuals are trapping nearly the same MPH - just slower, again...due to shifting and launching. On a MT you don't want an overpowered high geared 1-2, all you'll do is just struggle for traction off the line.
I have never dumped the clutch on my Cayman. That is supposed to really put a lot of wear and tear on the transmission and/or clutch, right?

Yeah I get that everyone just brands it, but I wish they'd tell us, the people who work for them, at the very least. It'd make life a lot easier.
And yes I actually know about the AISIN gearbox. Saw one of our master VW techs working on an X2 before and he told me that almost all of VW autos in the last few years use the same AISIN box, so our BMW service dept sends him the X1 and X2 if its in for transmission work.

I have gotten much more aggressive with it in the recent year, though. And that has led to me being a bit sad that I never really need to shift higher than second gear while accelerating unless I'm getting on the toll road or interstate. Hell, I don't really need to shift higher than first on most of these roads since the speed limit is 40 mph. Almost, almost, makes me regret not getting a Miata instead so that I could at least be shifting a little more often when scooting around town, even if it would be a much slower and less luxurious experience.

Kibs, if there's one car that can handle the abuse of a clutch dump, it's a Porsche. Not that I ever would!
Find the video of the 991 Turbo S doing PDK launch control launches for hours on end. The car never skipped a beat or overheated. I think it was Motor Trend or something that did that test? It was nuts. It was dozens and dozens of launches...absolutely incredible engineering. A GTR would've shit its guts out.
Yea it's something Porsche carried over to the Taycan as well. They are all about consistency and performance reliability. It's why a lot of the automotive comparison tests are a bit strange and focus on early hot laps (especially in hot desert areas like Willow Springs) but over the course of a long race the Porsches will demolish because their attention to consistency and cooling is unparalleled.
So if you see something like "This Mustang is faster than a 911 Turbo S!!!" then just be aware that yea, maybe for a lap early on. Do the same for 0-60 tests and those other cars falter after a few runs.

Have had to go on several solo errand runs lately and got to drive on some roads that lay me actually get going quickly enough and fast enough to nearly red line first gear before shifting. A couple times almost red lining second gear, too. Pretty fun and a nice change of pace.
I've often had to shift at 4k rpm or less lately because there are always cars in front and they don't /can't go as quick. So getting nearly up to 8k today multiple times has been very rewarding.
I really need to schedule getting new tires asap, though.

More proof that Doug DeMuro is shit at what he does in a video he posted about why the Audi R8 was the perfect halo car. He goes on to compare the R8 to the relative failures of the new NSX and LFA. But were those cars even deemed failures? Especially the LFA...how is that a failure? You can watch his terrible argument and then read the below that I chimed in:
As the owner of an R8 V10, there's so much wrong with this video, I don't even know where to start, your logic is all over the place. For starters, the LFA was always intended to be a limited run car - they only made 500 and sold them all within one production year (2012). Please don't bring up the 5 cars sitting at dealerships new for years, those dealers bought them and held them trying to make a huge gain on those cars. Also, Lexus didn't release a new RX at that time; the same dull (albeit facelifted) RX that had been on sale since the later 2000s was still running about until 2016. The RX you pictured was a 2017+ car, released 5 years after the end of the LFA. Likewise, the IS you pictured is a 2014...again, years after the debut and end of the LFA's production. If, in fact, sales is such an indicator for you of a halo car's success then why did you fail to mention that Lexus' sales numbers skyrocketed after 2012? In the US in 2011 Lexus sold just shy of 200K cars, a low after the end of the recession. In 2012 Lexus sold 260K. In 2015...345K cars. Looks like massive progress to me, faster than that of Audi's. You reference Acura numbers from 2005-2015 when trying to make your NSX point, meanwhile the NSX came out in 2017. Wtf?
I don't understand the logic you've used to make your points, it's all over the place. The R8 was meant to be a higher-volume production car like a Porsche. It used off the shelf parts from a range of Audis, VWs, and a Lamborghini frame, (automatic) transmission, and V10 engine. The LFA had nothing off the shelf about it beside its infotainment system and some switches. You need to do your research a bit better than that

My morning today:
Wife took M3 to work, since I needed to service her F-Pace for small stuff (and get 2 wheels refinished under warranty, after tire shop scuffed them with their machine). The M3 shut off on her way to work. :\ She described the symptoms, and to me it sounded like battery/alternator. Luckily, it happened 2 blocks from her job, and less than 1/4 mile from my shop who has serviced the M3. They met her, jumped the car, and drove it over to the shop.
Alternator test failed. $900 to replace.
So I continue on to Jag dealer. I get an E-Pace loaner, drive it 10 feet, notice that coolant level is low. I turn it right into the bay and tell them this. No more loaners available besides a Malibu or Camry. So because I'm a pompous twat, I just asked for a shuttle ride home.

LMAO. I was like "ehhh...I have other cars at home". The thing is, I generally DON'T like loaner cars because these dealers now place them under your insurance. So if something were to happen to it, it's on me and they'd go after my insurance. Audi does this, Jaguar, BMW, etc. It's annoying as fuck. It makes me anxious driving these things. Usually, I leave the loaners alone until I have to return them.
So yeah...I've got 2 cars out of commission now.
They didn't offer to fill it up with coolant? What the fuck lmao.
If that happened here, the service advisor would just steal a bottle of coolant and dump it in the radiator. Or if he's a lazy twat, he'll take it to a tech who'll put it in for you.
But yeah, the whole car shortage is another issue and a half. We've got Land Rover customers complaining that we're putting them in Volkswagens and I'm like really? At least it's a fucking VAG SUV not a Malibu or Camry. 😂
One of our stores went from having a fleet of 50+ loaners to a fleet of 20. And if you want or absolutely need one, you better schedule it ahead of time(like 2-3 weeks out) coz the loaners we have left are for people who are absolutely desperate for it.
But yeah, shit's bad man. And there's still no indication on when the industry can get out of it.
EDIT:
