I had it #2 in 2013 as well, right behind Boyhood.

I was thinking the other day about A24. How many misses do you think they have had so far? Of the ones that I have seen, only The Bling Ring really sticks out to me as something of theirs I didn't care for.

Saw the film yesterday and found it to be a by the numbers biopic. How much you will enjoy this film depends entirely on how invested you will be with the characters and quite frankly only three characters are given any significant focus…Brolin & Connelly + Teller. I found Teller's character to be alright at best but nothing notable going on there for me to care much. Brolin and Connelly had a better dynamic going on that made for enjoyable watching. Everyone else was more or less a face in the crowd. Oh, Jeff Bridges was great too as Brolin's friend. Not much going on there as a character but Bridges is always awesome.
Beyond that the film was directed competently enough. The soundtrack was forgettable though or perhaps I've been spoiled by Wind River and everything else seems worse in comparison. XD

I couldn't get over the trailers.
"When the fire comes in"
"Sharing your man with the fire"
"Seal team six of fire fighters"

Haven't seen most of their films, but from the ones I have:
Spring Breakers, Under the Skin, A Most Violent Year, Mississippi Grind and The Witch were great (especially The Witch; I think that film is pretty much a masterpiece)
Locke, Ex Machina, Free Fire and Swiss Army Man were good
Only one that stood out to me that I know got shitty reception was Sea of Trees

I'd definitely recommend seeing "The Lobster". A lot of people love, "The Green Room" (I don't), but it's not bad.

The Blackcoat's Daughter, but not because it wasn't interesting. Just didn't really take advantage of it's characters or inherent creepy af atmosphere, until the end.

Haha. Yeah, the trailers nearly made me not watch it but the solid cast convinced me in the end. Most of that dialouge is as awkward as you expect it to be but the movie can be a decent time passer.

I've gone back and forth thinking about seeing it, but I just don't think I can be convinced. I'm done watching "extra" movies with my moviepass. The premise does nothing for me. This weekend had nothing.
I think I need to start checking the local uni arthouse theater.

Did the director explain why? That's like almost a whole act lol
By Apollo Go To PostDid the director explain why? That's like almost a whole act lol
Alfredson explained that "10 to 15%" of the movie's screenplay wasn't shot because he didn't have enough time. He came to the movie relatively late, after Martin Scorsese had stepped out and worked as an executive producer instead.
"It happened very abruptly," Alfredson said according to IndieWire. "Suddenly we got notice that we had the money and could start the shoot in London."
Thelma Schoonmaker, Scorsese's longtime collaborator and editor, stepped in to pull the footage together, but there remained huge gaps in the story.
"It's like when you're making a big jigsaw puzzle and a few pieces are missing so you don't see the whole picture," Alfredson said.
It's a shame. The film has a bevy of talent behind it. Michael Fassbender stars as Hole, Alfredson directed the masterpiece "Let the Right One In," and Rebecca Ferguson, J.K. Simmons, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, Val Kilmer, and Chloë Sevigny fill out the rest of the cast.
The movie has also been criticized for its inexplicable understanding of Norway, where it takes place. Alfredson says he wasn't trying to make a documentary: "If not everything is geographically correct, I don't give a shit."

The movie certainly isn't a must watch film. I'm sure that I'll completely forget about it in a few days/weeks so no real loss for you to skip this film.
Anyways watched another film today:
RV: Resurrected Victims
Very fun Korean movie with an interesting premise. At its core the film revolves around victims of murder coming back to life to take revenge on their killers who had escaped punishment. It follows the tale of one man whose mother was killed and comes back two years later to take revenge. It does falter in a few regards. One particular scene is baffling in hindsight as to why did this occur given what the character does later. I also feel that the movie could have gone and explored the social impacts of the dead coming back to life but the film takes the easy way out by making these incidents be kept a secret by the governments of the world. A missed opportunity I say.
The acting was fairly good from everyone involved or at least serviceable. Plot was okay though the twist became more than clear after a certain point in the film.
I'll give this a tentative 4/5

They have an absurd hit rate for me, but there are definitely a few misses like Mojave, Sea of Trees, Revenge of the Green Dragons.
By n8 dogg Go To PostThe movie has also been criticized for its inexplicable understanding of Norway, where it takes place. Alfredson says he wasn't trying to make a documentary: "If not everything is geographically correct, I don't give a shit."
Yeah, at first it's just Fassbender teleporting around in Oslo while walking home. Then it's stuff like Fassbender walking into a really famous night club, but it turns out to be the apartment of his colleague. The worst part however, is when they have to drive to Telemark. Telemark is at least a 2-3 hours drive from Oslo, but they do it in 5 minutes, and here's the kicker, they use footage of them driving in the Lofoten islands 1400 km north of Oslo. I mean I understand that a movie doesn't need to be completely geographically correct, but you don't need to use famous post-card locations when breaking that rule either.
Anyway, the thing I found most disgusting was actually the movie's treatment of women. It really stood out, especially how Fassbender's character is treated compared to Rebecca Ferguson's.
BTW, just rewatched the trailer and they show pretty major stuff that's not in the movie. I think they changed the ending.

It's probably my second favourite of 2013 after Llewyn Davis
Inside Llewyn Davis is a masterpiece
By Freewheelin Go To PostThink I’ll go and see Thor and Hulk in space, and death of Stalin this week
Both movies are on my list to watch. Thor 3 especially since it seems to be a delightful watch.
Mother! is probably my favorite movie of the year, it’s sad how underrated it is. Also disappointed it flopped at the box office, but I don’t really care about that.
My fiance and I saw Geostorm tonight. It is absolutely wonderful in it's awfulness. I work in IT as a sysadmin and they go full NCIS two people fighting a hacker by typing on the same keyboard tech bullshit. Not literally, but it's a real treat of stupidity.
The CG is bad, the acting is bad (think almost soap opera level) and cheesy dialogue, the no emotional stakes random devastation and hilariously over the top action... Oh and super scientist Gerard Butler in space doing a bad New York/North Eastern accent. I had a hard time not laughing out loud during the most "serious" scenes and did actually have tears come out of my eyes at points. I didn't want to disturb those around me so tried to keep it together the best I could. I will be watching it and laughing hysterically at home when it releases.
This will be a perfect movie for those that can enjoy the worst and this movie has a lot of that to give. I have a hard time thinking that Dean Devlin isn't in on the joke. If you have MoviePass or just like really good bad movies, I highly recommend it.

A Ghost Story
Thought this was a great experience! The only real complaints I have about it is a really hollow monologue, and the third act didn't do as much for me as the previous. Great mood, great music (if a little dramatic) and Rooney Mara with a powerhouse performance.
Though I will say you might require the patience of a saint to get through the first 20 minutes.

By sunshine and gasoline Go To PostOnly The BraveI also saw this yesterday and I liked it a little more than you, Brolin and Connelly acted very well and have great chemistry like it gelled off each other. Miles Teller was okay but compared to his other roles since Whiplash and War Dogs, it's a blessing since Fantastic Four hurt his career. Jeff Bridges is Jeff Bridges (AKA cool as fuck) Cinematography-wise, it looked great considering it's the same guy who did Oblivion's cinematography.

Thor: Raganrok
Taika Waititi is the most left-field choice for Marvel's thundering demigod with his unusual comedic style, but Thor: Ragnarok (2017) is the most original and devise movie in the line-up with fantastic visuals and fun tone. Reinventing the iconic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby comic book pages, with new twists expanding upon the alien worlds seen in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies.
Waititi's (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) confidence in bringing out fun sides to the Asgardian prince, finally give Thor some needed character with belly rolling laughter correcting the over-serious tone seen in the prior instalments. The movie traps Chris Hemsworth (Avengers) as the god of thunder on an alien world, while Asgard is under attack due to the latest threat.
Despite dangerous story elements Marvel Studios allow the independent director to deliver a light-hearted character study, filled with great action and outstanding quips. The bright coloured, funky and 70s sci-fi inspired cityscapes to give the world a sense of originality never seen in the previous adventures: I give props to the visual department artists that bring the rich environments to life. Every facet of Ragnarok is the retro romp advertised, with the Sakaar planet design looking like a Heavy Metal magazine cover (with Led Zeppelin music numbers).

Apparently the new Gerard Butler disastar film Geostorm had problems with the filming and had reshoots two years after it was supposed to be finished. Probably best to avoid it.
