I play spreadsheet games like Football Manager and EU4, HDR means nothing to me. PUBG is too jank to support as well
Been team x70 for like a decade. middle spot is best. Pay $200 every few years to upgrade to the new card. Probably could have sat on my 970 longer but went to a 1440p screen
Could have sold my 1070 for what I paid for it with the mining boom but then it would be another AU$400 to get to a 1080ti and I there's a lot I could do with that money instead.
By Smokey Go To PostI'm shifting focus away from high end tbh. I've had a total of 3x 1080Tis, and I've sold all of them. Sold my Swift. I waited months for x299 and it's mixed. Back on 1080p monitors. Probably cop a 1050Ti or 1060.
RIP

Can anyone recommend me a good free(ware) app / tool for hard drive recovery? I need to deal with a raw partition from an external drive.
Saw of couple of tutorials for Testdisk, yeah. Seems straight-forward enough. I'll try that, thanks.
I stumbled on what looks to be a nice 5.1 sound system for PC's just now: the Edifier S760D. It can be found on [url=I finally stumbled on what should be a pretty nice 5.1 sound system for a computer: Edifier S760D
You can buy it on Massdrop for $600 or on Amazon for $900.
e: Edifier appears to have a surround system a step lower that normally goes for $600: http://www.edifier.com/us/en/speakers/s550-encore-5.1-surround
Edifier keeps popping up in my searches for good bang-for-the-buck speakers everywhere I look this past year so they should sound great, though I haven't heard any myself.

That looks similar to the Logitech Z-680 that I have that is nearly 20 years old now. Just less inputs (one optical, one coax)
Biggest issue for me buying something like that now is no HDMI which makes it useless for pass through from my TV so I only get 2 channel sound.

As I figured would happen, Asus delayed their 4k 144hz panel too.

See this what I was talking about regarding high end in my earlier post smh. Cop a 1060 and call it a day on my 1080p screen, this shyt irritating. Should've waited until now or so and shown those monitors off, not clearly months and months ahead like they did.

I most definitely did the right thing jumping on the 7700k / 1080 GTX / X34A train when I did. What a glorious combo m8s.
Smokey, the lowest rung of high-end is a good place to be. You get (nearly) all the features of the cutting-edge, but after it has been refined a bit. Better performance for your dollar, too. Less heat, less power, fewer issues in general.
You just don't get quite the performance and sometimes have to wait a few months to a year to get access to the newest stuff.
Now you have extra money available to spend on audio gear, which everyone in the family can enjoy throughout the house! Excluding headphones, anyway.

Have to be careful when purchasing one of these to make sure it supports the same or greater HDMI specs as your TV.

Prolly means I hold on to my money until 2018.
My microcenter got rx 580s and 1060s, for non jerk prices. Can't even do online store pickup on them, you have to physically go to the store. Gonna cop one of them today if they're still there.
We full mainstream now kibner pls

I will support you, though! Just turn down anti-aliasing, shadows, and things like HBAO and don't render above 100% resolution and you'll get great framerates in even the newest games. They make passively-cooled 1060s now so your rig will be quieter than ever, too!
Just be sure to get the 6 GB version and not the 3 GB one.
I only upgrade cards when there is a jump of at least 50% performance (but usually closer to 100%) between my current card and the newest entry-level high-end card. It usually means I go 2-4 years between upgrades. I upgraded from my GTX 670 last summer, so it lasted me four years.
I do similar with CPUs but that is closer to 3-5 year cycles since they haven't improved as quickly as GPUs have. Just looked it up and my 3770K is five years old now. So, yeah, feeling it's about time for an upgrade, though I may wait till second gen Thread Ripper or something.

I just looked at my 4930k and that came out 9/13. About to be 4 years old, although I didn't get it a launch. X299 was supposed to be my upgrade path, but AMD kind of changed the game, and x299 seems to be pretty underwhelming. The good thing about buying high end is it'll last you a long time. My 6 core CPU came out in 2013 and we just now seeing mainstream 4+ core cpus. My chip should be solid for a another 3 years or so tbh.
Yeah, mine is a 4 core / 8 thread, but recent games are starting to max out its usage. Especially if I have a Twitch stream or other video playing in the background. If I can get an 8c/16t CPU with roughly equivalent performance-per-core for ~$300, that's my upgrade path.
Gonna let the display drive my upgrade path. If I get one of those HDR displays that are now delayed until 2018, I'm probably gonna need a Volta GPU to push it. But since they did get delayed , the 1060 should pair nicely with my 1080p panel while I wait for stuff to hit market. I loved my Swift, but it was the gen 1 model. TN panel, no HDMI. The latter was really bothering me. I wanted one monitor to serve both consoles and PC and I couldn't do it with my previous setup. Can run DVI-D at 120hz and use the HDMI port on my 1080p screen for consoles.
That sounds like a solid plan to me! It's always good to prioritize the goals for your build and purchase according to your budget.
The more I think about it, the more AMD may be the way to go on a future build. I completely forgotten about their AM4 platform, and how they usually stick with it for years. Any motherboard you buy today, you'd still be able to use as they release upgraded Ryzen chips.
Intel’s (almost) relentless “tick-tock” processor updates may help its chips ride the bleeding-edge, but an unfortunate side effect is the need to also upgrade to a new motherboard every year or two. AMD doesn’t plan to follow that lead—in fact, representatives mocked it at CES.

AMD expects the unified AM4 platform to last until 2020, representatives told us. AMD’s Jim Prior told me that the idea is for AM4 to last until DDR5 and other futuristic technologies hit the streets. And looking around, it feels like Intel is gonna definitely have a problem with Threadripper.
“We’re not going tick-tock,” AMD CTO Mark Papermaster told PCWorld. “Zen is going to be tock, tock, tock.”
Yeah that whole "It's going to be tock, tock, tock" thing won't work out at all.
Lithography changes are slowing, and will eventually come to a screeching halt and there is nothing AMD can do about it.
I mean i guess he could just be saying every release will include major architecture changes but lets be honest, AMD has not shown any ability to do that.
tick tock was fine, it's tock tick tick that has been a bummer.

hopefully all these coffee lake leaks are legit. Base i3 with 4 cores and 3.6ghz would be such a huge boost for value gaming rigs.

Same. But the increase from the GTX 970 to 1070 was big enough for an exception.
I need an excuse to buy a gaming monitor, but is there a single video card that plays everything max settings at 4K, 60fps?

Like, would it be possible for Windows to only have the area of a monitor where HDR content is playing be in HDR? I ask, because what if one day a browser can support HDR and you have it open on half the the screen while a Word document or something is open on the other half of the screen?
If Windows is unable to turn off HDR on the part of the screen that has the Word document, you will be blinded. If they are currently unable to limit HDR to just portions of a monitor, I can see why they went for an all-or-nothing approach.
e: actually, is there a reliable way for Windows to even determine if content is HDR or not?

Vega is power hungry
Trades blows with 1070/1080 respectively
Freesync users finally have good GPUs to drive their monitors
But Volta
Decent launch, 6 months too late. Vega 56 + Ryzen bundle could be a pretty good deal though.
