Yeah no one really knows. But I'm sure they'll do something for the 40th anniversary next year, right?
So uh... I just came out of this movie.
I went in expecting good Star Wars because of the reviews....
This was not good. At all.
Okay that's not fair. The Vader bit was really good, the second act between sand planet and Mads dying was very good. But the third act was fucking atrocious.

saw it over the weekend.
its a more traditional star wars film.
a spiritual successor if you will
more so than TFA.
also thoroughly enjoyed it more so than TFA as it had better fleshed character arcs.
the only dumb shit i coudn't stand was the last scene with Princess Leia
like seriously?

don't see how this is traditional star wars either with the fact that you know everyone is gonna die at the end from the start. this is basically a war movie set up in the star wars universe
This is the least traditional SW by a long mile. Hell, kado, you decried VII cause you thought it was too much like the originals, no? So I'm not sure I follow your train of thought.
Correction, I thought ep 7 is nothing like the originals. Ep 7 is a JJ Abrams film in the star wars universe.
As for the character in 7 the only ones I cared for are Solo and chewie.
In R1, I felt the characters felt more organic with their back story.

did you guys read this yet?
the original screenplay had a much happier ending.
im glad they all died.It makes their sacrifice that much of a bigger stake in ep. 4.

By reilo Go To Postbruh you're on your own lolI'll refer back to n8dogg's post.
this is how i feel abou this film.
Episode 7 though?
let's talk about Rey and how she evolved in the film.
oh right, she didn't. she suddently knew how to use the force.
*rolls eyes*.
oh right, she didn't. she suddently knew how to use the force.
*rolls eyes*.
That is a character arc, though. There was none in R1. Jyn was a little bit whiny at the start and became less so? Two seconds of her resisting the Rebel Alliance's need of her before doing it anyway?
Eh.
Eh.

its not even clear why she was anti-rebel to begin with. the film just kinda glossed over that whole bit.
the only person in the cast with some sort of arc was wen. luna's character was all over the place too
i posted about it briefly when i got back from seeing it.... but its obvious that this movie was frankensteined to hell and back. there's a director's cut and extended edition out there that'll spell out how much better this movie could've been - and it was already good in spite of its clear issues.
It's more curious why she wasn't full on rebel the entire time. Like wtf, what more convincing did she need?
Also, Rey is more of an almagation of Hans (the reluctant hero bit) and Luke (strong force user). She only got involved because death was the other option. She was happy camping in the desert waiting for whomever to show back up -- in fact she didn't wanna leave because of it.
By reilo Go To PostIt's more curious why she wasn't full on rebel the entire time. Like wtf, what more convincing did she need?the thing is, she was with sal's goons at first (again, why so much time on cyborg bug guy and the pilot? just a waste of film) - but that doesn't explain the rift between them. their entire relationship is full of holes that would've built her character better
instead we gotta waste all this time jumping planets for this wanker pilot who could've been written out of the script entirely and nothing of value would've been lost
how long did it take the pilot to get mind raped and learn how to speak again?
could've just put everything in the droid imo. more droid time, more toys
give me money pls

I thought Krennic was really well done. Everyone can overlay him onto the asshole at work. Was very satisfying to see Vader and Tarkin make him grovel.

Rey had real motivations too. She wants to be with Finn and BB8 because they're the first friends (lol finn) she's had. She wants to be with Han Solo because she worshiped him.
What's Jyn's motivation? Her dad, sure. But there was nothing that showed their relationship beyond, "well, he's her dad and that's why she should care!"
Her motivations should've been obvious but they flubbed it.
She should've been a rebel all along since the fucking empire killed her mother and kidnap her father. Come on. The fact that she needed convincing is a dumb McGuffin.

i think that was related to saw abandoning her. Sounded like she was all into the training at least. but getting left behind by saw and co kinda led to 'okay fuck everything' and just surviving.

Eh.
she has to change, evolve or shift one's attitude on a matter.
Jyn shutting out the Empire/Rebellion fight mentally, and emotionally suppressing her father because of abandonment issues to
fighting and believing in the Rebel cause and fighting for her Father's honor is a much better arc than Rey's Arc.
Now i'll give the screenplay for Ep7 the benefit of the doubt as this is a 3 episode story so that means Rey will have a longer time changing as the story evolves. but her learning her powers and suddenly learn how to wield a Lightsaber to beat Kylo Ren in a sword fight, is I dont know how to eloquently put it then to say "come the fuck on, are you serious?"
Rey never changed. her circumstances and motivation changed, but her persona stayed the same which makes her arc much flatter.
By reilo Go To PostHer motivations should've been obvious but they flubbed it.I agree with this sentiment.

Apparently mums dont matter in Star Wars world. :|
"I didn't know there was this much green in the universe" or whatever is more character development than anything jyn ever does in this cut of R1 lol

Jyn/Felicity just pouts a lot like she's space Keira Knightley
Honestly, the "this is a rebellion, isn't it? So I rebel" line from the original trailer which was left out of final movie would've given Jyn the most character development in the entire movie.

im totally changed now.
By reilo Go To Postkado, I love ya, but you're wrong on Rey.i love you too but Rey's arc #aintshit.
kado, imagine being raised in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere that's a little bit backwards, and being told that your entire life should revolve around that area and the people in it, and that you'd be letting a whole lotta people down if you moved out and tried to explore the world and the big cities that are scary and that they don't have a place for you to belong. And now imagine taking that chance and exploring that with your own eyes and understanding how wrong that nurtured sentiment you've been accustomed to your entire life wasn't the right one after all.
That alone, that get up and move out especially under dire circumstances shapes people in ways we can't even predict yet.
Maybe I'm more inclined to sympathize with Rey because of my own background, but I see her character arc as far more profound than the one-dimensional caricatures that Rogue One provided.

I felt nothing when Jyn and the other dude died. The movie made no effort to convince me that these are characters I should care about.
Like, I literally don't remember anyone's name besides Jyn. That's practically impossible for a Star Wars movie.

There was a stupid simple way of having their deaths mean something: have them escape the planet and then get killed by Vader on the ship as they hand off the drive that eventually makes it to Leia. Now that would've provided some emotional weight.
If the goal is to make a gritty war movie in the Star Wars universe then don't have new-agey space religion mumbo jumbo in it. As much as I appreciated the representation here.

besides Han Solo, I coudn't give two shits about everyone else.
almost everything in the screenplay felt forced and synthetic.
on the otherhand, R1 definitely struck a chord.
almost all of them, i cared that they survived the third act.

I mean, if Rey and Finn gushing over their first flight with the Millennium Falcon didn't do it for you but Jyn's completely unearned speech did then I don't know what to say.
By HasphatsAnts Go To PostI mean, if Rey and Finn gushing over their first flight with the Millennium Falcon didn't do it for you but Jyn's completely unearned speech did then I don't know what to say.The only genuine moment in th film
I rewatched TFA last night. The charisma in Ford's, Boyega's and Isaac's performances alone but the character work in that above R1. Not to mention Ridley being a lot more earnest in her semi-wooden performance than Jones, who acts like she's embarrassed to be saying the things she is. And then Driver doing really underrated work throughout the film, where you can feel him on the edge before it explodes in the finale.
Are they very annoying things in it? Yeah. Rey finding Luke's lightsaber with a bunch of doors that automatically open and Maz's handwave explanation is extremely irritating. Starkiller Base literally being a bigger Death Star that kills more planets than just one is lazy. Rey's force awakening comes far too quickly in some regards. It's not a perfect movie by any stretch.
But it's so propulsive and energetic; the performances are full of charisma and charm; the script is witty and focused on character over plot; and it has real heart. I don't think R1 has any of those.
It's still a decent film, but a lot of that is down to the Star Wars window dressing (complete with those incredible aesthetics, props, costumes etc) and Edwards' eye for action. In regards to the heart that defines Star Wars for me, it's lacking.

Finally watched it yesterday, might watch it with my mate on Friday and go see it one more time when I get back to Korea.
I enjoyed it. Characters were not all that noteworthy. Action was some of the best in the series. I really liked some of the throwbacks to stuff that is mentioned in ANH.
I think they did a good job of connecting this with ANH. Only thing that bugged me was Vader seeing the Tantive IV. That ending and the opening of ANH are a bit out of sync.
I loved the Vader bits. Seeing Mustafar completely left me gobsmacked, and his assault is one of my favourite things in any of the movies. Only sad thing was that JEJ's voice was a bit off at times.
Also, was really cool to see Jimmy Smits. With Mustafar and him in this film, it makes me happy to know that they have not just white washed over the prequels. I am still hoping to see Coruscant in some of the upcoming films.
Only things that really bugged me was the score, the worst of any film IMO, the titling of planets, and no opening scrawl. Would have been cool if they had just done a short one along the lines of The Empire is suffering setbacks in developing their superweapon to control the galaxy etc.

A great idea that would have made a huge difference I think. I hadn't thought of it. Little differences like that can make a profound change on a film.
I wish Kylo Ren had been revealed as Han and Leia son only on the bridge when Han said to take off the mask. We'd have all been that much more shook and made that scene 10x better I think.
I don't think Vader killing them would have worked. Vader would have tried to take them alive to interogate as he had done with the Leia.

It's not as though he knew the rebels he killed didn't know more than they did. No reason to believe he wouldn't have done the same to the others.

They knew exactly what was stolen, and once they handed off the drive, Vader could've just finished them off. There. Their deaths would have more impact.
