By shun Go To PostPut some respect on his name now that he is selling out to Hollywood too.Donnie Yen is a GOAT, but the rest of the cast was largely ain't shit.
I really enjoyed the movie. The beginning half should have been paced better to flesh things out more but it really come together as a film and worked well in the last portion when they actually start their mission.
They also make Dat Vader stronger and more brutal than he was portrayed in other film.
I really enjoyed the dogfights, the best ones to me.
Agreed about the first part of the film though. It was just a mess. You gotta do better than that.
The dogfights were.... there were MORE sure, but I'll always feel that Star Wars is better at big fleet battles and huge spectacles in general. They fell in love with what I feel is a cardinal sin in any dogfight sequence. How many times did they give a close shot to an imperial pilot, then focus on his console as it lined up an x-wing like one of those old school handheld gaming devices from the 90s? One time of that, sure, but after a certain point you're just knowing that people are fucked right off the bat. There's no tension in it. Its like the film version of everything wrong with Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. Also, and this was a complaint I had from TFA, you have fighters perfectly gliding into fire all the time. Sure, you SAY you can't shake that guy, but to everyone looking at the sequence its pretty obvious to tell you never even tried. Tie fighters and xwings alike just throwing themselves into lasers gracefully and without hesitation.
I loved the ship destruction porn though.
let me say one more thing tho.
i don't think you can ask for a better side-story film to lead with. if the plan is to have a star wars movie out every 18 months or so in the future, and this was the litmus test? man.... disney is gonna have enough money to build a death star for real lol.

Movie was good. Better than Episode 7 in just about every way.
Action setpieces might be the best in the franchise.
Impressively dark tone, themes, and ending.
That 30 seconds of Vader at the end made me wish there was more.
Tension in the final 40 minutes was fantastic.
Nothing about the plot stood out as particularly dumb, unlike The Force Awakens. It all progresses logically. I really liked the explanation for why there was such a huge fatal flaw in the Death Star design that everyone missed. Character development was clearly sacrificed for length; the rapport the rebels show at the end seems unearned, like there were a lot of scenes cut.
CG on Tarkin and Leia was impressive, although some of the facial animations gave it away.
When Krennic realizes he's been fucked by Tarkin and is about to get killed by his own creation, that was a surprisingly subtle and satisfying end for him.

It's necessary to watch it on 3D? I usually avoid it but if the film is done around the use of it then I'd prefer to go to the 3D screening
By domino Go To PostWhen Vader stepped out of the darkness…
Yeah, that Vader shit was unexpected.
Saw this Thursday and overall I really enjoyed it. The audience in the theater was really engaged and cheered loudly at the end too. If you're a fan of the series and you don't at least give it a try you'll be missing out on some very good fan servicey scenes and probably the best battle in all of star wars.
That said, the tone of the film is not right for star wars. I know that they were going for a war movie, but if you're going to tie the story so closely to the OT, it doesn't make sense to have such a dramatic difference in styles. I found myself thinking 'this isn't what I like about star wars' at several points throughout. Sort of how I felt watching into darkness a few years ago.
I hope episode 8 gets back to the swashbuckling, goofy, character driven tone of the OT..
Until then: I give this a 7.5/10
Oh, also the score sucked.

Edit: Very good movie by the way. I had fairly low expectations and I was very happily surprised.
I quite liked Jyn and Cassian (Diego and Felicity <3), and I'm glad they didn't go full on romance with them and kept them relatively focused on their task. Usually it annoys the hell outta me when two characters fall head over heels in the middle of something MUCH bigger...

It's me much better than TFA, a movie I consider to be completely derivative garbage. Recycled story, cinematograpy and iconography and bunch of smarmy overly charismatic characters joking around while being hunted, tortured and forced to watch acts of mass genocide.
While Rogue doesn't offer deep, complex or charismatic (with the exception of Donnie Yen and a too human comedic relief robot) characters it offers a clearly structured movie where events move at a brisk but logical pace and order at several places at once.
It's an unnecessary movie, but a well crafted one that deepens the lore expands the universe and gives a much better view of the inner workings of the rebellion. But it also shows balls and changes up the black and white formular introduced in the 70s by adding shades of grey to it. It might be an inconsequential footnote to some or the cynisism of 2016 real world politics seeping into this universe. But it's bold and interesting. Something that can't be said about TFA.

How on earth is something with stormtroopers, Tarkin, Vader and Death stars not recycled iconography lol

Unlike TFA those scenes aren't pivotal. To be honest they are the weakest links in Rogue and it would have sufficed to only hint at them.
I thought they'd only show the back of Tarkin and his reflection in the window. Similarly they could have done the same with Leia in the end. Would have been a cool aknowledgement and nothing more. Personally I have the feeling the reshoots might have forced these additional bullshit nostalgia scenes... Was it really necessary to add the two dudes from the original cantina fight for 3 seconds? C3P0 and R2, or give Vader these many lines? Fuck no. All these scenes were unnecessary and the only cool one was Vader's in the final minutes.
Oh man, I actually liked those scenes! seeing Vader and Leia was wonderful and the whole movie ending with the word 'hope' was brilliant
And the fleeting little nods doesn't make or ruin a movie IMO.

By Forever Go To PostCharacter development was clearly sacrificed for lengthNo, character development was clearly sacrificed for spectacle.
They could've made a decent Star Wars movie - that is, grading it within the series, not against actually good films - if they slowed it down and expunged half - at minimum! - of the computer-generated carnival of carnage.

I've come to expect nothing more from JJ Abrams and his crew of hacks. The star trek reboot was a travesty, but even those new star trek movies are a damned sight better than TFA. Literally not a single original moment in the movie. The casting, sure, love that a woman is the chosen one and she's a mary sue, diversity is great.

TFA wasn't just unoriginal though, it was all wrong in terms of pace. For a movie that copied a predecessor, it should have had no trouble, but instead it jerks about from place to place, introducing new characters only for them to be blown up or otherwise left behind/forgotten (cough yoda's barkeep sister) within minutes. I don't know, just felt very rushed/hasty, as opposed to urgent.
Also, the entire sequence with the beasts han solo was smuggling? That really didn't belong. That would have worked in zathura or bridge to terabitchia or tomorrowland or some other criminally-mediocre-by-design movie. Not star wars.

The Star Trek reboot is easily the best thing about Star Trek in a long, long time. It even has a proper origin story with weight to it.
I really enjoyed this! Jarring CG people aside. The last hour is just incredible. It's relentless and that beach battle is stunning. It's a gorgeous movie in general, but the AT-ATs coming through the smoke and over the tree line, with all the destruction happening all around, pure spectacle in the best way.

I quite liked TFA too, but I slightly prefer Rogue One.
I've only watched the first two Star Treks and I remember loving the one with time travel. It was the first one IIRC? Because after watching the second one I decided to completely skip the third movie

Newest Star Trek is good but doesn't do anything new. It's like a separate movie, an adventure if you will.
Still better than Into darkness.
Empire, Rogue One, Hope, Awakens...
I struggle with where to place Jedi. The bookends of that film are amazing but the middle and ewok shit is just....I might honestly prefer Sith. There are so many scenes that are like a bad car wreck. Turning the channel when you see the Palpatine confrontation scene is really hard to do for example and there are similar scenes like that from beginning to end. Objectively bad stuff that is entertaining despite itself.

Its wild how much less I hate Hayden these days. He actually did about as good as you could've asked considering the script and other mess.
Clone Wars show actually makes it extremely obvious that Hayden was a bad Anakin. His extreme whinyness and lack of intellect aren't there at all in the series.
With that said though, a perfect version of Anakin from the show somehow replacing Hayden probably doesn't change the quality of the films that much. Besides the script mistakes the movie probably needed to start with Jedi Anakin from the start and from the beginning of the Clone Wars. Three films of Jedi Anakin might have been enough to get a strong storyline told. Episode 1 was a complete waste from a narrative standpoint.

Clone Wars Anakin is written completely different than movie Anakin, I don't hold that against Hayden at all.
In the movies he's a sidekick, in TCW he's a leader who challenges authority without looking like a whiny bitch.

Saw it incredibly high this weekend. It was okay, Force Awakens was ok. I'm not much of a Star Wars person.
That's true. The script does kind of force that interpretation on Hayden.
Have you seen Jumper? Hayden is just a horrible actor..
He's a terrible actor but he wasn't given much to work with on Anakin anyway
no one could make movie Anakin not a piece of shit character

Beyond is the best Star Trek movie because it's basically Macross.
Loved the movie, wasn't expecting much until EP8 but this left me rather satisfied.
Vader brought the heat, that whole scene was lit.

I really did not like this.
First hour is a mess. Whole thing is a mess. Final battle went on way too long.
Not a single interesting character. Nothing visually interesting. Story was exactly what you would expect.
Vader was cool.
After two films in two years I already feel burned out on Star Wars. Makes me appreciate 7 even more.

Saw it last night. Thought it was very well executed, especially the final battle. There's a real sense of tension and of things hanging by a thread even though you know the mission ultimately succeeds.
Also: thought Felicity Jones was quite meh, but the supporting cast was awesome (especially Luna and Yen).
