I really hope the age of 5G can finally put to rest last-mile companies like Cox and Comcast into a slow decline on the road of extinction.
I want to see their stocks get shorted and to see the short sellers plunge to hell beneath awaiting them.

Fuck that is steep, never thought id be paying more than 2k for a phone. I need sleep on this, wish I could have one for like a week before I decide if it's worth it.

Good news!
Hot on the heels of USB 3.2 receiving a confusing Gen 2x2 suffix, the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) has today announced USB 4, the next version of the ubiquitous connector. Although the draft specification won’t become official until it’s published later this year, the standard is expected to increase its maximum speed to 40 Gbps over the 20 Gbps offered by its current version, USB 3.2.
If you’re familiar with Thunderbolt 3 then you’ll already know a lot of the specs of USB 4. It will still be able to deliver up to 100W of power, and has enough data throughput for the use of external graphics cards, and to power two 4K displays, or a single 5K display. You’ll need to use cables that are capable of 40 Gbps speeds to enjoy the standard’s full benefits, but any existing Thunderbolt 3 cables (and, for that matter, accessories) you have should work with the new port.https://www.theverge.com/2019/3/4/18246182/usb-4-thunderbolt-3-specs-features-release-date
All this means that means that USB 4 is essentially just catching up with a three year old technology, but by becoming an open standard it’s likely to become both more widely available and cheaper. That’s true of the computers themselves, but it’s also true of external devices such as monitors, docks, and eGPU enclosures.
By reilo Go To PostUSB-C is just a form factor and is the standard going forward.
Does anyone other than Apple use it?
Just read the article. So this is only for usb-c, not a?
I think Razer use thunderbolt in some of their laptops. I would imagine they are hoping type-c will take over from type-a
By Shanks D Zoro Go To PostDoes anyone other than Apple use it?Most laptops going forward seem to have the port, most android phones have it, even my headphones do. There will be a while where Micro USB and USB A get phased out, but it'll be the future going forward

Cool.
I hope Apple uses it on iPhones in the future. But knowing Apple...

Not again Intel...
Further demonstrating the computational risks of looking into the future, boffins have found another way to abuse speculative execution in Intel CPUs to steal secrets and other data from running applications.https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/03/05/spoiler_intel_processor_flaw/
This security shortcoming can be potentially exploited by malicious JavaScript within a web browser tab, or malware running on a system, or rogue logged-in users, to extract passwords, keys, and other data from memory. An attacker therefore requires some kind of foothold in your machine in order to pull this off. The vulnerability, it appears, cannot be easily fixed or mitigated without significant redesign work at the silicon level.
well, don't that just beat all. i wonder if it is something that goes as far back as the pentium, making amd susceptible to it, too.

Okay Zuck ;)
He said Facebook would achieve the shift partly by integrating Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger so that users worldwide could easily message one another across the networks. In effect, he said, Facebook would change from being a digital town square to creating a type of “digital living room,” where people could expect their discussions to be intimate, ephemeral and secure from outsiders.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/06/technology/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-privacy.html
“We’re building a foundation for social communication aligned with the direction people increasingly care about: messaging each other privately,” Mr. Zuckerberg said in an interview on Wednesday. In a blog post, he added that as he thought about the future of the internet, “I believe a privacy-focused communications platform will become even more important than today’s open platforms.”
Surely it’s pure coincidence that Facebook’s sudden interest in privacy comes as the company faces an ever-cresting tidal wave of public backlash and heavy breathing from thirsty regulators in Congress. Sated after sopping up all of the ad dollars drifting around the wreckage of a soul-crushingly monetized social web, Facebook realizes it’s probably time to chart a different path forward. Luckily, it picked up some brands people hate less along the way.
It’s different with privacy. Privacy is about philosophy. It’s about how you handle things from the start. Facebook effectively stole a whole bunch of shit over a long period of time, relying on intentional obfuscation, legal muscle and user ignorance to pull off the heist. Now, the company is trying to make it out of the store with all that contraband stuffed under its shirt before the security guard ambles back. Unfortunately for Facebook, its hands are stained with a decade and a half of data wrung out of a now cumulative 2.3 billion users.https://techcrunch.com/2019/03/06/mark-zuckerberg-discovers-privacy/
Know what would make my instagram conversations more private and intimate? Not having them linked to any other account.

Edit: nvm 16:9 is already too close to golden ratio anyway; so yeah, 4:3 the goat
Any recommendations for an external SSD USB-C drive, preferrably Thunderbolt? Looking for 1TB and up.

There's a million. Nvme capable ones are much more expensive.
E: m.2 is the form factor and is the most compact. Sata and nvme are communication protocols with nvme being much better for SSD's when latency is important

If you don't want to do an enclosure the Patriot Evlvr should be good. Anandtech actually does a good amount of portable SSD reviews too..
You probably won't see the difference between a USB 3.1 Gen 2 (no wait, sorry its now USB 3.2 Gen 2) enclosure and a TB3 one, but it's possible depending on your use case.
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA53D8KZ9114 is probably what i would get for a USB + NVMe solution.

Nice, thanks for that! All of those look to be small enough to carry around, too.
Now recommend me a SSD por favor.
Now recommend me a SSD por favor.
Personally, at its current price point i would go with the 1TB HP EX900. Not a really high performance drive but it's still TLC and at $135 its a great value.
Don't need supreme performance, just want to quickly transfer hi-res photos and maybe in the future video rather quickly.
I just remembered that HMB almost certainly won't work over USB, you will probably want a drive with DRAM. Damn, sorry.
