I’m looking at downgrading my internet, how many people are in your household? Just you?
I have gigabit FiOS but I really don’t feel like paying $80/m any more as I’m not sure I need it. I looking at 300MB from Optimum but wasn’t sure if that was enough to efficiently handle a household of 3. Say I’m playing, my gf is watching Netflix and daughter streaming as well.

Just me but I have my devices on and streaming simultaneously because reasons. I'm certainly using enough internet for 3 people.
By RobNBanks Go To PostI’m looking at downgrading my internet, how many people are in your household? Just you?A 4k Netflix stream uses 25 mb/s. So, 300 mb/s down is more than enough for 3 people.

Officially cancelled my Google Fiber today, I just have to return the network box. I also cancelled my cable service with Spectrum, keeping the internet, and again just have to return the equipment. My cord is cut.
DirecTV Now is working out pretty well, with a few annoyances. The guide seems to come up slow. The lack of channel numbers is also a hindrance, not that the UI I'm using supports numbers anyway (Roku). But the quality overall has been great. Really impressed.
I've also gone ham on Roku. I bought a 4K Roku TV (43") last year for the previously spare room in my townhouse (turned it into a little den) and I found that I just preferred that interface over the 2 Samsung smart TVs I already owned. When I moved last weekend, I gave my larger (55") Samsung away, replaced it with another 4K Roku the same size, then bought a Roku streaming stick for the smaller Samsung (32"). It's now sitting on top of my fridge. The 43" moved into the bedroom (the 32" was in there before), and I have a 40" in my home office that I just bought a Roku streaming stick for tonight (it wasn't a smart TV previously). The media interface for streaming my own audio alone makes it worth it over the Samsungs, and it's just plain easier to navigate and find new TV apps. I'm not even sure those Samsungs supported DirecTV Now anyway. (Instant update: I now see they announced support last month.)
Anyway, yeah. Going great. No cable. Internet seems to be speedy, it tested at ~234 max on my phone, though I can't seem to get my laptop to hit more than 80. I'm not sure where the bottleneck is, but I'm assuming there's some configuration I just cannot find, as everything I can find about the network interface suggests it supports faster speeds. Everything I've googled hasn't moved the needle one bit. Ultimately, it's not all that important, as long my modem is getting those speeds, and as long as my router is delivering those speeds to my devices, then I really don't care what my laptop is doing.

I loved DTVNow just because I got local channels like MSG and SNY so if I ever wanted to torture myself, I could watch Knicks and Mets games. All the other streaming services would only give me YES.
Ended up cancelling it to save some money but I’ll probably renew when basketball season starts up again.

By Kidjr Go To PostHey slaent, I need to pick up a laptop on a budget of say £500Is there certain software you need it to run? If not, just pick up a nice tablet to get better value for your cash.
By Kidjr Go To PostOh mainly used for office work so prefer laptop. In that price range, laptops are basically disposable. So get whatever looks coolest or has the best battery life, screen or whatever else is most important to you.
Watch whatever the UK equivalent of slickdeals is and buy something on sale. Make sure it has an SSD, or you leave enough budget to put one in.

It’s also limited to 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage
And notch?
Breh.
So, refrigerators. Anyone know a good bit about them? I am looking to replace my existing 20+ year old Kenmore with something that is much quieter and, preferably, has an ice-maker (which the Kenmore does not). The dimensions I have to fit into are 37" x 70". The Kenmore I have is 30" x 65.5". The noise level is important to me because I have an open floor plan and it's very annoying when the fridge kicks in.
It costs a pretty penny, but I see people really like the Liebherr brand for what I want. Their CS 1400R-IM fits my specs (extremely quiet and 30" x 66") and seems to sell for the same price everywhere ($2,140).
e: i forgot to mention that it also should be freestanding and countertop depth (so, like, up to 31" or so deep)

Oh I just saw the article and I remember a week or two ago everyone being upset that everything has a notch now.
Speaking of Apple, lol @ them leaking their own shit. Going through all those measures to prevent leaks and you leak it yourself.

I’m using the shitty one Verizon gave me bc at the time I was broke and never got around to getting a real one 🤷🏽♂️

I'm going to have to get a new one. The wired connection is fine. I get ~930/930 but wireless takes a big nosedive using the ATT one (60/70 in down/upload). Obviously I'm not going to get a full gig on wireless but that's (relatively) terrible. Looking online others had the same experience with the ATT provided ones and saw a massive jump when using their own.
Since no one asked, I bought a LinkSys router, the model EA6350, which supports 1200 bps on its dual bands. It was a more modestly priced router, and there are models in that line that increase the bits with increases in price. I don't have gigabit internet (thanks, Google), but it's serving my 200 Mbps internet as fast as it gets it (to my phone, still haven't figured out my laptop's issue).
Smokey, get the Netgear Orbitz (or other high quality mesh router) if you are going to be in a large place where signal can get weak (i.e. if you are considering a wireless extender or similar device).
Gigabit is dope but Wifi speeds aren't exactly going to get you there. If you can ethernet it you're golden, but otherwise you'll just be limited by the wifi spec until it catches up.

I legit don't know how you get through enough internet to require that speed. 34 down/9 up is fine for me. I've not tried streaming in 4k yet tho
I like downloading my video games in minutes 🤷🏽♂️
Its nice to know that I can download, delete and download a MS game (they’re all like 100GB) and still be done before you download Dota once.

Speaking of NETGEAR, that company has a new gaming-focused router which is sure to excite some consumers. The "XR700 Nighthawk Pro," as it is called, is tuned for gaming and features some top specs such as 802.11ad and a 10G Ethernet port. Overkill for most consumers? Totally, but gamers utilizing a wireless connection may be willing to pay the higher price for a potential edge.
"The NPG XR700 combines advanced gaming software with best-in-class, high-performance hardware that avid gamers expect of the Nighthawk Pro Gaming brand, such as a powerful 1.7GHz quad-core processor, quad-stream WiFi with MU-MIMO, the fastest 60GHz 802.11ad WiFi technology, and four external high-power active antennas. With a single 10G SFP+ port and additional 7 Gigabit ports, the XR700 is ideally designed for streamers, videophiles with networked storage, and those who depend on hard-wired gaming hardware," says NETGEAR.
The popular networking company further says, "Using a compatible SFP+ module such as NETGEAR AXM765, gamers can run 10G connection from the NPG XR700 to a 10GBASE-T capable PC and experience one tenth the latency in downstream of a 1G connection, eliminating any bottleneck to reach breakneck speed. Couple the Nighthawk Pro Gaming SX10 10G LAN Switch with its (2) 10G multi-gig ports with the XR700, to extend the number of available ports and provide the perfect setup for the ultimate in LAN gaming and swift transfers of large data like 4k video. The XR700 is designed to enhance online gameplay, providing players with an optimized network environment to deliver top performance and dominate over the competition."

So the wifi gateway i have for att fiber is their newest one. Has something called Band Steering:
Band steering
When your Wi-Fi gateway has band steering, it automatically guides your wireless devices to the best radio band. For example, if a newer 5GHz device connects to a 2.4GHz signal, it might not get the best performance. Some of your older devices won’t work on a 5GHz signal. Since your devices don’t know which radio band to connect to, our newest gateways steer your devices to the right radio band.
This is the first I've heard of this. Your 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi names have to be the same, and have the same password for Band steering to work. Checking my connected devices list, which we have quite a bit, it's accurately chosen the devices to use the 5ghz band or the 2.4ghz band.
Trying the wifi now on my phone I got 362/531 with a 4k video playing on my pc + a 1080p video playing + netflix streaming to the main TV for my son. May not need to get a new router
By reilo Go To Postlol that's not new
huh
well ive been using an older backup netgear router up until this point which doesn't have it.
might stick with netgear if i do get another one tho
Man, I tested out YouTube TV, and I like its interface better than DTV Now. It's cleaner, faster, costs less. I'd switch, but for some damn reason, I can't live without the Weather Channel, and YouTube doesn't have it.
There's really no reason for me to keep DTV with the new internet i have, and no caps. Probably going to take a look at the available options more seriously.
I was debating on re-subbing to DTVNow but $40 extra a month, I'm not so sure it's worth it.
Thinking I might just do Hulu Live, it's only an extra $32 a month. They basically offer the same channels except Hulu doesn't have MSG so I guess I'll have to be a Nets fan this season..
I didn't like Sling at all unless they changed it. If you subbed to both packages, duplicate channels would show up making the guide a nightmare. I wouldn't sub to YouTube TV cuz fuck Google.

There is also PlayStation Vue, which does not require a PlayStation at all to use. It is what I sub to.
Thankfully, every service has a free trial so you can try each of them to see which one you like most.

The problem is that PS Vue isn’t compatible with the TV in my room, but now that you mention it I don’t think Hulu Live is either. At least when I last considered it it wasn’t, maybe they’ve added support in the last few months. It’s one of those budget Samsung TVs.
I did use PS Vue for a month, i liked it but DTVNow was probably my favorite of all. Just not sure I want to pay the extra $8 just to watch the Knicks
