By pilonv1 Go To PostBought a Pixel 2 today, came with free Google Home Mini as well. Only taken a few photos with it but coming from a three year old HTC One M9 which had one of the worst camera software implementations I've ever seen, it's incredible and I'm very happy with it

Of course first day at work with it I forgot my USB C cable so I'm living with battery anxiety. Luckily it's only gone down about 10% since 9am (now 11:30)

Google published a Chrome app in the Windows Store earlier today, which just directed users to a download link to install the browser. Microsoft isn’t impressed with Google’s obvious snub of the Windows Store, and it’s taking action. “We have removed the Google Chrome Installer App from Microsoft Store, as it violates our Microsoft Store policies,” says a Microsoft spokesperson in a statement to The Verge.SMH
Citing the need to ensure apps “provide unique and distinct value,” Microsoft says “we welcome Google to build a Microsoft Store browser app compliant with our Microsoft Store policies.” That’s an invitation that Google is unlikely to accept. There are many reasons Google won’t likely bring Chrome to the Windows Store, but the primary reason is probably related to Microsoft’s Windows 10 S restrictions. Windows Store apps that browse the web must use HTML and JavaScript engines provided by Windows 10, and Google’s Chrome browser uses its own Blink rendering engine.

Upgraded from a S6 Edge to a Note 8. Liking it so far. Need to remap this Bixby button and figure out how to use the stylus.
Starting as early as next year, software developers will be able to design a single application that works with a touchscreen or mouse and trackpad depending on whether it’s running on the iPhone and iPad operating system or on Mac hardware, according to people familiar with the matter.
Unifying the apps could help the iOS and macOS platforms “evolve and grow as one, and not one at the expense of the other,” says Steven Troughton-Smith, an app developer and longtime voice in the Apple community. “This would be the biggest change to Apple’s software platform since iOS was introduced.”https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-12-20/apple-is-said-to-have-plan-to-combine-iphone-ipad-and-mac-apps
Apple is developing the strategy as part of the next major iOS and macOS updates, said the people, who requested anonymity to discuss an internal matter. Codenamed “Marzipan,” the secret project is planned as a multiyear effort that will start rolling out as early as next year and may be announced at the company’s annual developers conference in the summer. The plans are still fluid, the people said, so the implementation could change or the project could still be canceled.
This is the kind of thing that should result in massive fines.
Also, there should be some kind of oversight into software updates. We just have to take Apple's word for it that they aren't programming obsolescence into their devices?

Who's going to fine them? Trump's government?
Even then what's a fine going to do to a company with $256,800,000,000 in cash at any moment

By KingGondo Go To PostThis is the kind of thing that should result in massive fines.Fines? what? Batteries deteriorating over time is not planned obsolesce. Slowing down a device to extend battery life is a legitimate strategy to combat it.

I would say the exact same thing for Android manufacturers, except their strategy is to just stop providing any updates at all.
Y'all serious or something lol
Batteries are the #1 killer of any device and will be until we solve battery tech somehow.

I turn down the brightness and shut off gps to save batt life on my older samsung. Using a internet browser or the FB app on it runs that thing down like a motherfucker tho.
I wish there was an option on iOS to permanently enable battery saver mode. It makes a huge difference.

What?
By Kibner Go To PostI took my mom's iPhone to the local Apple store a couple years back and they wanted to charge upwards of $200 to do that.I had it done for ~$80 on my Fiance`s iphone5.
I know on the old Galaxys where you could access the battery, a spare would only cost you $30. They didn't really need to build in "slowing devices down", back then.

Don't think that's how any of that works.
You can put in regulations (lol, yeah right, america protecting the consumer), but you're not going to find anyone submitting code to a regulatory body before they release a patch.
By KingGondo Go To PostWe obviously can't trust these companies. Better explanation of what is happening here https://techcrunch.com/2017/12/20/apple-addresses-why-people-are-saying-their-iphones-with-older-batteries-are-running-slower/ , which essentially got dumbed down to "Apple is slowing your phone down so you have to buy another one!!"
Even the comments on that article explaining it, people refuse to believe this is anything other than planned obsolescence.
They should give people the option to slow their phones down or not.
You can’t honestly expect people to be understanding when they get used to a certain level of performance for months or years, then it drops all of a sudden when an update hits.
It would be more understandable if iOS had taken big obvious leaps with each update but it hasn’t.

But if they get a sudden drop off of performance when that update hits, they would also get a sudden battery life boost. Apple has always tried to be about "it just works" and lacking advanced options, i don't see them offering a "choose a compromise" dialog.
As far as i can tell, this throttling only happens after your phone gets the "your battery may need servicing" warning, they should just add in the explanation text that it can cause device slowdown when on battery also.

Let me give my fellow elitist penny penching android customers some advice:
If the device doesn't support Project Treble then don't buy it otherwise you'll wait forever for updates.

By Kidjr Go To PostDoes anyone here own an pixel 2? if so what are your thoughts?Smokey and Pilon love it. I hear the camera is great(especially the portrait mode). Doesn't have a ton of features you would probably want considering the price(headphone jack, IR sensor etc)
Installed a mesh network system at one of my cousins' house earlier tonight. They were very happy with the results. Their laptop would often struggle to get a connection in places they often used it; it is now very snappy. They are also happy to just be able to get any access at all in parts of the house they were unable to before (~3,400 sq ft. house).
e: i'll be installing another one for a family member in a couple weeks after they get back from vacation

Yes
Got some new headphones so the jack thing isn’t an issue unless I’m listening in bed while I sleep. Only thing I really miss is there’s no wireless charging. But the camera is amazing and it supports fast charging so who cares.
Apple says in its letter that batteries are “consumable components,” and is offering anyone with an iPhone 6 or later a battery replacement for $29 starting in late January through December 2018 — a discount of $50 from the usual replacement cost. Apple’s also promising to add features to iOS that provide more information about the battery health in early 2018, so that users are aware of when their batteries are no longer capable of supporting maximum phone performance.https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/28/16827248/apple-iphone-battery-replacement-price-slow-down-apology
By reilo Go To Posthttps://www.theverge.com/2017/12/28/16827248/apple-iphone-battery-replacement-price-slow-down-apologyI find the thought that people are surprised that batteries .... die with constant use and degrade hilariously stupid. That's just one of those things everyone knows.
(Still don't agree with impairing performance without telling people and giving them the option to not.)
Debating between an Eero + switch vs Netgear Orbi for my own house. The Orbi has enough ethernet ports to not need a switch so it would cost less. I need to see if Orbi has a service that can block malware and ads at the router level.
I replaced my 2015 Moto X Pure phone with the OnePlus 5T this week. The Moto's performance had really started to drag, due to either OS or app upgrades or both.
I was drawn to the 5T because of the storage and memory (I got the model with 128 and 8 gigs, respectively), and it's nice and responsive. An added bonus seems to be battery life. The Moto's battery would have nearly drained itself at this point in the day, just from refreshing Twitter and this fine establishment. 5T is still sitting at a solid 87%.
