you want to adjust those numbers for black people who've built the country, been experimented on, and been the scapegoat for just about every imaginable issue in america for hundreds of years? its not happening.
Some reparations is better than no reparations. I don't think truly proportional reparations could ever happen, but there is precedent for it in recent history.

lol the wealth of this nation, the wealthiest the world has ever seen, is based almost entirely on slave or near-slave labor for the first 180 years. We can't pay real reparations.
But gestures have meaning. Sometimes gestures can be unimaginably powerful.
By Tea Go To PostThose jobs aren't coming back. I'm of the opinion it will probably just have to get really bad again, like depression era bad before people might wake up to New Deal type socialism and instead of "welfare", Universal Basic Income. Even in dem/lefty circles you have people so beholden to the concept of working to make a living despite the ever narrowing job market and eventual automation for the rest, so good luck with this discussion despite the inevitable reality.
My money is in violent revolution if it gets that bad. Then whoever os left alive can write a new Constitution where white male landowners are not its ideological foundation.
Trump dominated among voters that hated both candidates. I think this is evidence for Comey causing Trump to win the election by making Hillary have the last negative news story in the campaign to remind people that disliked both candidates why they disliked Hillary.

Those margins in Florida and Wisconsin are gigantic for Trump among "dislike both candidates" and with Florida and Wisconsin, Hillary has 271 electoral votes.

The American Dream is one of the best marketing devices ever created. It's obviously bullshit (for Americans, if you're in El Salvador hustling or starving in Venezuela anything is better) but it's so powerful and uplifting for so many people that it instills hope for all the wrong reasons. It's manipulation brilliance at its best.

Well, to be completely fair, the American Dream was indeed real in Post War America. But, people always neglect to mention that it's a Whites Only kind of dream, and it's built upon the inherent inequalities in this country.

The central theme of capitalism is boarder line slavery. Or to get as close to it as the laws of the land will allow. That's much easier if you're white, specifically a white man.
Chris Rock was spot on all those years ago. If you're white, the sky is the limit. If you're black, the limit is the sky.
Have you guys talked about Trump call with Mauricio Macri that got Buenos Aires Trump Tower approved overnight?

So Carson confessedly won't know what the hell he's doing with HUD, and Falwell Jr, in addition to not knowing what the hell he's doing with Education, will be burning to pull flagrantly unconstitutional and anti-science shit.

Well it's clear people are trying as we speak. I *guess* I consider it a positive that he's clearly resisting on some things. There's definitely people who wanted to step on the necks of the dems from jump street and he's been surprisingly merciful in this regard
Still think it's possible he does this victory rally thing. Which would entail more bumptious constitution-shredding free-associating about what he's gonna do.

what the article doesn't tell you, as per typical anti-Turkish sentiment in UK media and the EU:
Greek Cypriot government wants:
Turkey to remove itself from the list of guarantor states protecting sovereignty of the island
Huge redraw of the current borders, Turkish Cypriots ceding swathes of land
The removal of all Turkish military personnel.
The removal of all Turkish settlers after the Turkish government's intervention in 1974.
They want these concessions before even discussing their idea of reunification.
Basically almost everything they couldn't get when they started their Enosis campaign of ethnic cleansing on the island after the British left. Makes me fucking sick after what my family went though there, the marginalisation, ghettos and executions they suffered with. Dad still suffers with the firing line where Greek militia shot up 8 year old kids, including his friends.

This is true.
There was some study that estimated an additional ten million immigrants from Mexico within 40 years if severe climate change happens (because of massive crop failures in Mexico leading to poor economic conditions that cause migration), lol.

By IWMTB19 Go To PostIf you cut the funding, it's going to be hard to continue doing research.Yeah. Just to be clear to others in this thread: researchers are entirely dependent on grants, and governments are among the few sources that semi-routinely fund research that doesn't have an immediate economic payoff (industry used to do it more but has largely shied away since it rarely pays off anymore). Public universities are effectively government agencies in this context, because the federal or state governments can cut funding for all of their programs to punish them for supporting research the current political party doesn't like. Private universities could theoretically still support the work, but very few of them don't depend on government grant money for *anything* (even places like Harvard with enormous endowments get lots of federal funding, and many individual researchers are critically dependent on those grants). Research on climate change will still probably continue in some parts of Europe and maybe China (because it's politically in favor there now), but I'd expect research on it here to become about as relevant as stem cell research was during the ban on federal funding for it under W.
Frankly, the only reason people aren't talking much about this is because it's hard to fuck over researchers more than Bush so we're already acclimated to it (much like I see tons of people using the Muslim registry Bush started to justify Trump wanting to reinstate it, or Gitmo etc.). Basically Bush was a massive piece of shit and normalized a lot of this stuff.
Trump is giving Education Secretary to Betsy DeVos.
This is a pretty traditional Republican pick in that DeVos is involved with horrible people (the mercenary group Blackwater and the pyramid scheme Amway) who hates teacher union's and public schools, but it's an absolutely bizarre pick for Trump because DeVos LOVES Common Core and Trump hating Common Core was one of his five policy positions.

If I thought Trump was actually making policy decisions, I'd think he might be good for NASA's budget (unlike that of every other scientific agency), just because NASA is popular and saying you're going to fund NASA makes people like you. But I'm pretty sure he's not making policy decisions.
I still desperately want a two hour grilling of Trump on Common Core from educational experts.

"No Excuses" charter schools have shown some success but the reasons as to why have not been parsed yet.

School vouchers are bad.
http://www.nber.org/papers/w21839
We evaluate the Louisiana Scholarship Program (LSP), a prominent school voucher plan. The LSP provides public funds for disadvantaged students at low-performing Louisiana public schools to attend private schools of their choice. LSP vouchers are allocated by random lottery at schools with more eligible applicants than available seats. We estimate causal effects of voucher receipt by comparing outcomes for lottery winners and losers. This comparison reveals that LSP participation substantially reduces academic achievement. Attendance at an LSP-eligible private school lowers math scores by 0.4 standard deviations and increases the likelihood of a failing score by 50 percent. Voucher effects for reading, science and social studies are also negative and large. An exploration of mechanisms suggests these effects are not due to private schools’ inexperience with the program, disruption caused by school switching, or the quality of public school options available to LSP applicants. Negative voucher effects may be due in part to selection of low-quality private schools into the LSP: participating private schools charge lower tuition than other private schools and experience enrollment declines prior to entering the program. The program’s negative math effects are concentrated among the eligible schools with lowest tuition.
