Shanks, to continue our discussion from the other thread, I know what connects Rey being at the academy, and Kylo... The old villager at the beginning of the movie, on Jakku. He knew Kylo, he knew he was good before turning. So yeah, that was the spot.

But does he know Rey???
He was an old ally who personally knew Leia, doesn't mean he knew much else.
I didn't like Kylo. At first, I thought his actor was the guy who played JP from Grandma's Boy, but that's because his character felt like that character. I think he completely changes in the next film.
Not sure about Rey's origin. I would say for sure that she was hidden away on that planet, but not by whom. The greeting between her and Leia did raise an eyebrow.
As for Luke hiding out: His two greatest mentors were both hermits. That's always how I read that, including in the EU.

I'm willing to bet he was there to watch over her. Along with the scrap junker guy. Rey will probably go back to Jakku in the next film and learn the truth. I could see them saying the junker guy was trying to buy BB to keep her out of whatever was going on with the first order.
I am a casual fan so bear with me...
I wonder if they will go more into depth on Han and Leia parenting for Kylo. I feel like they downplayed the relationship of a family breaking down with them saying that Snoke was the one who convinced Kylo.
I also don't understand how Kylo was so easily tempted when he was named after Ben Kenobi and was supposedly supposed to have been taught about how his uncle and grandfather really were like.
How was Luke as a teacher. These relationship questions should be addressed to see how fallible some of the original characters are.
Kylo is also very awkward. There is a difference in acting when his mask is on and off. He is a powerful character but I feel like he is really mentally weak and that is what handicapped him throughout this movie. Even if he was just in training, he still has years more experience than rey and finn. It show how much potential Rey has as character.
I wonder how Kylo looks in Episode 8. Surely he has some scars and disformation. Rey sliced his arm off, gave him deep cuts over his body and a deep cut on his face, he was also suffering blaster wounds as well.
From what I understand he's completely human right now so I wonder what happens to him. Same with finn. Finn was sliced in the back and with a weapon like a lightsaber there is no way that it is just a slight wound. He has to have had some sort of spinal or nerve damage from that. I don't buy Finn waking up from a coma good as new.

I dont like my villains as cry babies with daddy issues. He seemed like a highschool nerd who accidentally tapped into the force
Fuck this, abort...bring out Darth Maul Jr.

I really liked him. Was a nice change to see someone battle with his goodness and want to plunge into the darkness.
Snookie was weak, but then I wonder what people thought of seeing some women playing an old wrinkly emperor in ESB. I will pass judgement on him until we actually see and know more about him.
Glad to see I wasn't the only one who didn't like Kylo. Felt like some boring spin-off character.
Fuck, there's gotta be some dope sith left. Maul didn't die after all.

Thought it was pretty brilliant tbh. After a spotty first 15 mins where I almost fell asleep it was like a roller coaster the rest of the way.
I like that Kylo didnt come out the gate as the fully formed article. Breh clearly powerful as fuck but he also a lil emotional bitch trying to live up to a family legacy that isnt even real. Its obvious that he was lied to about how things went down in the OG trilogy and thats what turned him. He gonna boss up in the 2nd movie.
Finn was cool although they pulled a mean bait and switch on us with the marketing. Curious to see what they do with him in the 2nd movie. He's funny, pragmatic and brave. Hopefully he gets to be a Jedi too.
The old people were alright I guess. Glad Han got knocked off. Wish that Luke wouldve at least force snatched the lightsaber at the end and turned it on but that wouldve been too fanservicey I guess.
Rey was cool. I really like her costume and she pops off the screen.
Poe was great even though hes pretty much a nothing character. Oscar Isaac did great. I hope they give him a bit more in the 2nd movie. Or maybe an animated series/comic of backstory explaining why he was Leia's most trusted pilot.
BB8 was a great addition to the robots. The thumbs up had the theater dying laughing.
As far as rankings I would have it behind Empire and Revenge. Its the 3rd flick in the series I'd say that I consider good.

The greeting between her and Leia did raise an eyebrow.I fear she might be a Skywalker (Luke's daughter, perhaps?), but I can't imagine that's actually the case, since Kylo Ren has already been revealed to be a Skywalker. That would just be way too much Skywalker family shit going on.
My friend (and others) have theorized that she was probably a young Jedi trainee that was abandoned (or hidden?) on Jakku for some reason. Perhaps by Luke. I think it's very plausible, given her existing skill set.
My theory is the Jedi Temple Luke was setting up was on Tatooine. He meets a woman whose father was a hermit in the desert (Obi-Wan embraced relationships in Clone Wars). He falls in love. They have a child. The temple is attacked while Luke is away. Ren kills the woman and the rest of the trainees but can't bring himself to kill his little cousin. Some one escapes with Ray and puts her into hiding.
Luke's connection to the force is severed and he goes to find away because he knows Ren and Snoke are out there. He's been asleep for years.

I love it
Loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it.
There's been a number of issues bandied about with this film that I think are only exacerbated because our generation has been conditioned to be cynical fucking cunts about everything.
"It's the same plot as the old ones" - I mean, the old ones worked. People underestimate how hard a job JJ Abrams had with this film; he has to keep the 50 year olds who were there for the original trilogy happy, it has to keep this generation on the internet who fucking whine about everything and think they could do a better job and are extremely picky about what they criticise and don't, all the young kids who are coming to it new, all the fans who want to see Luke every 30 seconds and will be annoyed they haven't, all the fans who don't want any old call backs because that's nostalgia-baiting, all the social justice warriors looking to see if women and black people and aliens are well represented... and he picked the approach that worked the best: make people happy by giving them what you know makes them happy. Good shit.
"There's blood" - go watch A New Hope.
"Kylo Ren is whiny" - no, he's a character. There was more earned character development in this alone, development that Driver and Kasdan/Abrams actually earn and show you rather than just fill the gaps by telling you, than the entirety of Anakin's rise and fall and salvation (ROTJ included in that).
"Too ambiguous, we don't know how the First Order came about/Rey's back story/where Snoke came from" - and we didn't know where the Empire or its Emperor came from either. And I can bet you when you were 10, like a large population of this audience will be, you didn't give a fuck either. Not everything has to be explicitly spelled out, especially considering there's two other films and there's enough for you to infer by yourself.
Any other complaints, I'm ready to fucking bat them back. That was a Star Wars movie. For good and for bad, that was a fucking Star Wars movie.
The iconography hit all the right notes. The new characters were charming and full of personality, and the new actors - Isaac doing a lot with a little due to his fucking inherent charisma, Boyega absolutely OWNING it, Rey and Kylo both real multi-faceted and familiar takes on what we've had but Driver and Ridley are really good. They can sell you on emotion. That's perfect.
Star Wars is all about emotion. It's all about heart. It's not "fuck, let's make this completely different than what we are because it's the 21st century and people seem to care more about what happens than why or how". It's not about detachment. It's about heart.
And there's heart. Twice I cried; that fucking shot of Chewie after Han's death ended me personally, God. I knew the death was coming, but after spending time with Harrison Ford actually acting again? Just felt the lip go, lol.
The other time was when they showed R2 for the first time, and a little girl gasped and squealed. That's what Star Wars is. Unbridled enthusiasm that fucking hits everyone.
The action was great; dynamic, thrilling, accompanied with bombastic filmmaking and sensational sound design.
The music was fine; nothing stand-out but enough riffs on the old stuff that I still enjoyed it.
Acting, as I said, was great. Driver, Boyega and Ford the stand outs, and some lovely stuff from Ridley too.
Everything looked so lived in, so dirty and dusty and real. Snoke was a bit generic looking, but Maz had some real presence about her despite being CGI. Good work from Lupita.
I just... I just loved it. It felt like Star Wars, and that was enough for me anyway. Add on all the other great shit about it? Home fucking run, JJ. Home. Fucking. Run.

Good post. I guess our experience differed mainly because you're obviously a bigger fan of SW than me.
it's true that both Rey and Kylo were real multi-faceted character and stuff but one was my favourite character and the former was on the other end of the spectrum. I just wasn't feeling his character at all, I wanted someone intimidating and COOL, not a fucking bitch who cried more times than Pirlo in finals.
maybe this will allow him to fully turn later on and have no emotional baggage to carry around? And now everybody (in the movie) certainly hates him for a legit reason at least!
overall as I was telling you, at worst and at best, it's still the 3rd best SW movie and that's an accomplishment in itself lol

The whole point of his character is that he's a whiny bitch, though.
I mean, there's no disparity like with the prequels; we're told Anakin is a baller pilot, a great Jedi Knight and then presented with this fucking pathetic prick (and to make it even worse, it was acted poorly).
Early on, we hear he's Solo's son (which means he can't be older than 30). We know he's rivalling for Snoke's attention. We see him act out petulantly but still display his power. And then when he takes off his mask, his physical appearance factors into the belief that he can still be saved, that he still isn't the bad-ass he wants to be but isn't sure he is.
The difference with the prequels is that everything Anakin does is directly the opposite of what we're told; we are shown far more than we're told here, and it's all consistent.
Plus, it's the first part of a trilogy. And now we have a young, volatile dark side user who has killed his dad, been injured, failed his mission, and disappointed his master. That's flawed. That's far more interesting than we've had so far.
Even more interesting than Vader. Is he a fucking bad ass like Vader? No, not yet. There's potential. But so far his journey is earned, unlike Vader's redemption.

I think the criticism that it's a lot like the original is valid. It hit several of the same story beats, to be sure, and it's setting up the sequel to have several of the same beats as Empire Strikes Back.
But it didn't personally bother me because the tone is DRASTICALLY different than the first trilogy. The Force Awakens is a far darker film than Star Wars, and it's quite clear the trilogy will be far darker than the original trilogy.
It really adds a poisonous edge to so much of what happened in the original films.
Han and Leia got together and had a baby. (D'awwwwww.)
But they split up.
And their baby turned to the dark side.
And ended up killing Han.
I mean, that's some DARK SHIT, and really undermines so much of the joy and happiness of the original films. But in a really fucking great way - and a way that Lucas NEVER would have done.

Multi-faceted characters? They're literally stagnant on a basic 2-way scale of morality.
Dark moments? All we get for Han's death is Leia sulking for 5 seconds, and then happy times come again.
It's great kids' drama. And as such, it has remarkable artistic qualities. But it is still extremely simplistic, and treats the viewer as an idiot who needs commentary to be spelled out. I find it interesting that lots of people like their entertainment to be as on-the-nose as possible. Today's entertainment has to be obvious for it to please masses.
I really enjoyed it. I can't wait for the next one. But I know it's a guilty pleasure, not even an introduction to adult drama. I need my healthy dose of light-heartedness, but I'm shocked to read that people think it's what they would consider dark.

It's not just on-screen moments that contribute to it being a very dark film. It's the implications (both clear and less clear) of what happened following the Rebels' decisive victory in ROTJ, and what's yet to come in this trilogy. It's pretty damn bleak.
And let me qualify this by saying that I consider it very dark by Star Wars standards - especially the standards of the original trilogy. It should be obvious that I'm not saying this is a super, super dark film on the full spectrum of mainstream cinema.

The implications? Literally tens of billions of people are blasted, and the movie bombards you with happy music and smiles. This is not about implications, it's just messy writing with zero gravitas.
It could be serious and deep as it deals with happiness, but it's just all over the place.

Star Wars has always moved on quickly from a death.
Luke's aunt and uncle die, doesn't give a fuck.
Leia's planet blows up, she barely cares.
Obi-Wan dies, Luke at least seems to care more than he did about seeing scorched bodies, but then goes back to not caring twenty seconds later.
Those Skywalkers are literally the coldest bastards in the galaxy.

Make the inference. Shit is weird. There's a New Republic trying to stay out of trouble. There's a quasi-Empire looking to stir shit up. There's a Resistance. There's smashed ships all over Jakku. Stuff went down.

I don't think Kylo is multi-faceted at this point. That's not entirely the issue for me though. I just don't understand how he overthrows a Jedi academy and Luke. He looks too mentally weak to rise to where he has. The pouting comes across to me as a contradiction to his assumed backstory. The way he falters to an untrained force user only reinforces the idea that it makes no sense that he is where he is at the time. He's not a threatening villain at this point. He truly is far too much like this character:

I really liked the film, so it's not lax cynicism. He's just not strong as a character so far. If anything, he's a comical villain. I don't think fans want comical in their Sith.

Comical?
He killed Han Solo.
He's responsible for the most heinous act in Star Wars history (feelz-wise, no one gave a fuck when Ki-Adi Mundi or a bunch of rat tail kids went down).
We know he's powerful. We know he had too much Vader in him. We know Snoke seduced him. Potentially gave him others to learn from with the Knights of Ren. We know they slaughtered an entire academy (save Rey? Don't think she's as untrained as she seemed). Earned to me.
A million times better than Maul and Dooku. And at this point in a new trilogy, a better character than Vader, who for all his badass looks, didn't have the development and got jobbed in his TIE fighter.

I imagine she was so exceptionally powerful in the Force she was hidden from Kylo/Snoke. Plus, she's a handy fighter and pilot before she picks up a lightsaber. No way she's 'untrained'.

By Dark PhaZe Go To Postwho's powerlevels? Rey?
Kylo is presented as a badass who can stop lasers. Then he's a kid who has tantrums. Then we learn he fucked the academy up. Then he takes forever to beat a stormtrooper. Then he loses to a character who apparently was trained when she was 5, forgot everything, then knew everything again. It's just a mess.

He hasn't finished his training, and I doubt that he faced Luke. And probably the rest of the bad guys were alongside him when he decided to kill every kid in the new academy. A stormtrooper with a lightsaber and Kylo was very injured by Chewie.
I'm not a fan of Kylo Ren so far, but I think he will have an interesting evolution through the trilogy. Rey is clearly more powerful than him, even being a raw user of the force. Kylo went to the dark side of the force to be more powerful because he knows he isn't as good as his uncle and grandfather + other reasons we'll learn I guess
By Elchele Go To PostA stormtrooper with a lightsaberThey're not great weapons (in the prequel trilogy, they already make fun of the fact they're outdated compared to lasers). It's all about their user.
