A whole lot of words in here about a joker movie. All I needed to know was that it was incel friendly.
By diehard Go To Postspeaking of film snobs, right on que.
That’s great.
You still don’t understand the nuance in a statement from a scholar. He was approaching the medium from an academic standpoint.
Forgot to mention the dwarf who is only in it to be the butt of jokes. Ha ha little people are treated poorly by society too.
Skipped past n8's post, as I'm seeing it later, lol.
Also seeing The Lighthouse and Jojo Rabbit today. So excited for the former. Dunno what to expect for the latter, haven't seen a trailer.

By n8 dogg Go To PostThe Feature Films of Martin Scorsese
First films:
Who's That Knocking at My Door
The opening images of Scorsese's debut are almost parodical in how they depict some of his career-long obsessions; food, family and faith all in equal measure, the holy triumvirate of Marty movies. There's no real reason to their appearance, with only faith truly rearing its head in regards to the film's plot, but they are interesting because they so clearly point out to the audience that Scorsese is a director of personality.
Among the film's content is a propulsive rock soundtrack, a series of montages, elements of gang violence, a showcase of toxic masculinity, and explicit portrayal of crises regarding faith and identity. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a Martin Scorsese movie.
It's raw in terms of execution, static and slapdash in terms of framing and cuts, and an amateur work, but it stands apart because of the aforementioned personality. Just like another New York filmmaker (Allen), the influence of European and French New Wave cinema is explicit in the film; kissing on the roof among the clouds, talking about movies in a banal, proto-Tarantino way. The interesting thing here is that it rubs up against the New Hollywood tensions of the girl's confession, a fusion of European arthouse and gritty American style.
That conflict and ambiguity is key to Scorsese's career. Is Keitel's JR a manipulative character? Genuine? Is he grappling with Catholic guilt regarding sex before marriage or is he making her 'want' more? Immediately after he cuts short the love scene, he's in a bar with his pals, drink in hand. JR is the first in a long line of flawed, male anti-heroes, where Scorsese invites us to admonish and judge them rather than take their side.
It's relatively aimless for 50 minutes and then shows its head; an exploration of male bravado and ownership over a woman. The flashes of images in the girl's story add veracity to it - compare it to JR's juvenile, Doors-scored fantasies, and it's clear where Scorsese's allegiances lie (especially when you consider the directorial choices he makes during the girl's story: the switch to pure imagery because words just won't do; the juxtaposition with the music; Keitel's reactions. It's horrifying stuff and truly powerful.) There's a confidence in his work that outstrips a lot of first-time directors.
Boxcar Bertha
Amusing how three of Scorsese's first three films are female driven, either in protagonists or in regards to the director's sympathies. Ironic for a director who has explored masculinity so often and so wonderfully.
By and large the only film of his that doesn't feel incredibly identifiable, as well as its quality; it's simply not very good. It is notable for that famous Cassavettes quote, expressing that Scorsese had been wasting his time making a piece of shit and it inspired him to make Mean Streets. In that regard, an important movie.
Scorsese makes his influences clear here - this is a Bonnie and Clyde pastiche through and through, and as a Corman production it also has the wanton acts of gratuitous violence that are emblematic of his movies. There's some good performances (Hershey grows into the role around the time she starts working at the brothel, and there's some charismatic performances by Primus and Morton) and a gorgeous shot come the end where - surprise surprise, Catholicism - a character is crucified to a moving train. Other than that, wholly unremarkable and easily the weakest film Scorsese has ever made.

for some reason I have no interest in seeing Joker, even though JP is one of my all time fav performers.

Joker didn't actually reach 100M$ in the US, estimates have it at 93M$ for the weekend.
Doing good business internationally, global total is already at 234M$, more than 4x the budget.

So, The Lighthouse.
[Whew Now that’s a proper film. Eggers has so much confidence in what he’s showing and his actors are superb, Dafoe and Pattinson giving absolute powerhouse performances. The film is also extremely hilarious too.
Need to see it again when it releases, but rest assured, Eggers is one hell of a talent, following on from The Witch.

review of the year i reckon
I saw and enjoyed the joker today, but the main thing I want to talk about was possibly the worst trailer I've ever seen, for a film called Countdown. It's about an app that shows when you will die, standard horror premise but everything about the trailer was so abysmal for the entire time I thought it was going to turn into one of those "Don't let phones ruin your cinema experience!" adverts.
But no, it's a real film and someone decided to give it some money and release it even though its the stupidest everything that ever existed

It's worth it to get to the ending.

Back to form?
aside from Aladdin and that shit he did with Madonna I don't think he really fell off...he just kept getting weirder and weirder for most. I was kinda eh on man from uncle for awhile but I like it now. His King Arthur movie ain't terrible either but its weird. Revolver is weird. RocknRolla is weird.
Speaking of tom cruise, that bit in joker when de niro introduces the action movie guest and he’s called ethan chase
lmao
lmao

True enough, although a) TDK’s comparisons to Heat I always find quite inaccurate and b) Winter Soldier being called anything close to a political thriller is hilarious

hard to disagree
i watched Aladdin the other day
it was alright and i want to bum the monkey
then i tried watching toy story 4 but got kind of bored, and ended up playing fire emblem instead.

Say what you will about the characters or casting but I still feel like Burton nailed that kind of snowglobe atmosphere and dark but campy mood better than all the new shit.

Sleepy Hollow one of my favorite movies. Watch it every year. When it comes to fantasy with a dash of horror & camp no one does better.

the heist scenes (among other ones) felt quite similar when i first saw it, and i didn't even know at the time that nolan had said he was inspired by it.
By Laboured Go To PostWhew, Midsommar was freaking gud.
downloading this right now.
I really didn't like Joker. I felt very conflicted about whether to feel sorry for a mass-murdering psychopath (!) or if I was supposed to 'cheer' for him because he inspired a movement and a cult. The film clearly asks us to 'cheer' for Joker and that's extremely disturbing/dangerous to me.
Phoenix was good and did what he could with the role, a better director and writer could have put more of a character on the page though. Tbh, I really don't know why this film needed to exist in the first place. All the Batman lore really pulled me out of the film too. I would have greatly preferred if it was its own thing and not connected to anything else. Just felt completely unfocused.

Agreed so hard with this, it's extremely dangerous unlike your other favorite shows like breaking bad and sopranos. I absolutely refuse to watch this film on principal. All it does is glorify the "lone wolf white male" archetype. It gives incels and and nazis a hero figure for them to look up to. It is absolutely disgusting and is NOT the movie that we need right now. Who the fuck thought this would be a good idea in our current political climate? The number one terrorist threat in the US right now is a white male.

you should probably stop watching r-rated movies...
By bud Go To Postyou should probably stop watching r-rated movies…I love you Budrick.
By bud Go To Postyou should probably stop watching r-rated movies…theres a difference between media like breaking bad or wolf of wall street where the main characters are portrayed as unhinged and delusional and joker where you are kinda supposed to cheer when the main character starts killing people because we live in a society
It doesn't set out to do it, it sounds like, but maybe it's just the deathblow we need to this morbid fascination with edgelords.
Everyone who loves breaking bad are cheering for Walt and hating skylar cause she gets in the way of him being a terrible person. Let's not pretend otherwise.
And I think that's alright.

im not arguing that joker is harmful or whatever. I'm of the opinion that a large part of breaking bad's audience are dumb and think Walt did nothing wrong and that he's the good guy
I was cheering for the guy who looked like Andreas Cornelius. Meth Damon or whatever. But he was also a terrible dude
Honestly a large part of BB's audience are young dumbfucks so there's that too. Sometimes you gotta remember what spaces you're in. Much of the internet is young and male, so that's the skew you're going to have on media. Fuck I feel old.
