Small Soldiers is on Amazon Prime. Always wanted to see it as a kid. First scene has Dennis Leary, David Cross, and Jay Mohr in it. I've never seen a more unholy band of actors at one time.

well, Snoke is underdeveloped by design I think in TLJ; he's served up in TFA as a cheap Emperor clone, and Rian Johnson realised that, using his character as motivation and development for Kylo more than anything else. I think that works massively in the film's favour. Obviously JJ can't do without his big bad so is returning to the Palpatine well.
Palpatine was planned from the beginning lol
LF has been working off of Lucas’ notes and outlines this entire time. His plan had always been Palpy in SW9 as the bad guy.
Probably clone or cyborg
not going to lie, i really want to watch that lion kings movie. the original is the first i remember seeing at the cinema, must have been 4 at the time, and i was scared shitless about Scar afterwards

Cap 1 is written better than TLJ. It's enjoyable but the idea that it needs to be propped up for validity is crazy. I didn't even hate on suddenly kamikaze, Jesus Leia, casino hijinx, prop snoke, cranky Luke, kill the past, issa mutiny, desertion fren, #bothsides, ground death star, kreia force bonds, wasted phasma, etc - but it's there and it's all terrible lol

MCU or star wars, at the end of the day both is still pure unadulterated shit.
By n8 dogg Go To PostRLM are alt right trash dogs
Shit on marvel unprompted but star wars is powerful filmmaking 😂 is this what happens when phoenixdark isn't around?
Both have the potential to be powerful filmmaking. I said it last week - the world’s biggest cultural zeitgeist movies should aim to be more than disposable popcorn flicks. This is something Black Panther succeeds at; despite the average action which dominates its second half, it absolutely is about more than that, and that makes it an interesting film. So too is GOTG 2, which I don’t really like much but appreciate for its storytelling (and the story it chooses to tell). Same too for Ragnarok. I didn’t fall hook, line and sinker for its comedy like lots seemed to, but the fact its unabashedly about colonialism is super interesting.
You mentioned Cap 1. What that movie really gets right is in its first half depiction of Cap. That whole ‘you can be more than you may appear, fight for something bigger than yourself, sacrifice others’ etc. The messaging of that film is on point, despite fairly average execution, so it ends up being successful.
TLJ is about ‘saving who we love’. About ‘failure being the greatest teacher’. About ‘forgetting the past and forging your own destiny’. And, in my opinion (again, I have no desire to change your mind), it nails those themes, themes which make Star Wars accessible and universal, themes which contributed to it being the biggest fuckin’ franchise around. IV and V are very much about similar things to VIII, whereas something like VII (much as I enjoyed it) or Infinity War is all surface-level texture. There is absolutely no weight or substance to Infinity War. It exists to tell a comic book story adaptation and that’s it. It doesn’t deepen character. It doesn’t explore themes. It doesn’t have a message.
Now we could argue all day about our opinion on whether those messages are rote or trite or cliched or infantile, or whether blockbusters need to be about anything, or whether TLJ is successful or not in what it tries to do, whether it’s less successful than Infinity War in that regard (you could probably argue IW is more successful in its intentions; I always hold Step Brothers or Fast Five up as shining examples of fulfilling their purpose and intent, and The Revenant as completely botching its own). But they are absolutely not the same kind of movie.
In terms of Marvel films actually having something beyond texture:
Black Panther, Ragnarok, GOTG 2 (things to say, irrespective of execution) > Winter Soldier, Civil War (pretends it has something to say but actually doesn’t) > Infinity War (doesn’t even try to have something to say).
The Last Jedi does have something to say. Forget your opinion on its quality. It is not the same kind of film as 80% of the MCU.

This tangent that blockbusters need to be about something or attempt to be is the BS validity grasping I was talking about lol
People can simply say they *like* MCU movies and its a comment that can't even be ignored. But the dumb stuff I just listed off that happens in TLJ that requires the audience to squint and bend over backwards to accept/tolerate is juelzed on (while suddenly victim hood is established too 🙄) and at the same time it's achuuaally all part of what makes it so wonderful.
And I actually like the new star wars flix. But cmon. This is approaching gaf levels of stannery

I think TLJ is superb filmmaking. Good acting. Good visuals. Good story. Good character work. Good editing. Good score. Good shit at being about more than just fighting and explosions. Everything I want out of a film, it does to some degree. Nor do I think anything you said above (save maybe jesus Leia, which I think is the worst thing the film does by some degree) is ‘dumb stuff’. Again, subjectivity.
“I cannot stop reading this lol” just speaks to your cynicism and lack of adventure, m8. Blockbusters can (probably should) be about more than bang bang shoot shoot.
Bored of this conversation now. I love the movie. Some of y’all love John Wick and Speed Racer and shit. I think they’re super wrong, but each to his own fam.

Films that explicitly do not take themselves seriously?

That's just ridiculous and if it's from some higher perch then even moreso. Waifu wars have more merit.
They don’t take themselves seriously. That’s fine. That’s their intent. I just don’t think they’re very good movies. Most my posts here are actually passing comment on films, instead of just trashing others’ opinions. I’m fine with people disagreeing with my opinions. Just amusing how reductive the disagreements are. Jesal the other day engaged. That was nice.
It’s just funny how I say ‘TLJ is good’ and then a million posts are like ‘no its shit’ and then i say ‘I think it’s good because of x and y’ and then you post ‘ur opinion is terrible’

I think almost every post you have ever made in my time here is the equivalent of “well, actually” mansplaining contrarian macho bravado cocksnot, but I don’t call you out on it every time you do it because you won’t change nor do I have the intent to see you change. You do you, baby. You do you.

It's crazy how this starts on how you hypocritically prop up star wars while jumping on MCU films for the same stuff turns into
"mansplaining contrarian macho bravado cocksnot"
Clearly I'm hitting a nerve here

Never understand why Star Wars gets so much attention in any direction positive or negative, it's a serial, a typical hero's journey, a fairly binary "these dudes good, these dudes bad" with a bunch of shit thrown in for younger audiences too*.

I know N8 disagrees but I really think it comes down to some sort of level of interest in the subject matter, there is no way star wars arnt on the same tier as MCU.
Only thing SW does better is visuals and audio.

Not even talking about the story. Star Wars movies are way above the MCU from a technical stand point. The cinematography and sound design in TLJ is better than any thing in the MCU
You’ve proven time and time again you dont know anything about filmmaking so you should sit this one out.
