Unemployment a questionable metric when wages are crap, hours cut, and benefits shit.
And anyway it's not on pace with the cost of living especially rent.

I'd meant to ask earlier, so thanks for reminding me, but rising rent is indicative of NIMBY-ism everywhere, right?
By Random Ass Username Go To PostUnemployment a questionable metric when wages are crap, hours cut, and benefits shit.

I mean it's just a metric. It's not questionable though. The feds wouldn't base their monetary policy off of it if it was just noise. You can have low unemployment and still have other metrics be bad ...
Inequality (wage gap), quality of life (hours), benefits (private or public) etc are all metrics used in the social progress index I linked to last page. We sacrifice these things for GDP growth. It's what shapes our economic goals and policy. Trump's up there stumping for 3%-5% for example. He slashes environmental regulation, cuts taxes all so he can try to claim a faster GDP growth than the previous admin. That tax cut will only worsen inequality though, and the regulation slashing hurts health.
Instead, if we as a nation started caring about the social progress index, we might force policy that sacrifices potential growth for a more happy populace. Y'all should be poo poo'ing GDP. Growth infects our stock market and drives business policy as well as public. Growth above all else really is the issue.
Watch the Ted Talks. I think you would enjoy it.

Probably regional. Rent really rose a ton across the board in 2008 and beyond because everyone who lost their home had to start renting. All the properties that were sold of short were bought up by investors to rent in the new market. Prices increase and now the cost of a down payment isn't manageable, especially with new rent prices.
Basically ... it's not just one reason. NIMBYism is a major issue though and places like Sf suffer big time from it.
By Smoke Dogg Go To PostI'd meant to ask earlier, so thanks for reminding me, but rising rent is indicative of NIMBY-ism everywhere, right? It's a combination of a lot of things but certainly no less helped by people who don't want affordable housing in their area. Crazy rent is more indicative of how badly (and really racism) we've managed urban spheres, all parts of the cities becoming rich people playgrounds. Property values rise so does property taxes, rent then goes up. Wages definitely don't rise with them especially in service industries. Places like SF are really fucked because of how locked up it is. Nowhere to expand, most land accounted for. And what does go up just becomes condos for the wealthy.
NIMBYism has become a pretty damn good barometer if a city can and will provide affordable housing in order to control rent in its area. Hell, even idiots in Portland that live in high-rise property built in the past 15 years (think Pearl, South Waterfront) are protesting against newer mixed-use high-rises being built adjacent to them because "it will ruin their views" and "lower their property value". It's idiotic, it's classist and racist, and its people that have it good wanting to maintain a status quo that keeps it good for them.
So, yeah, fuck NIMBYs.

This... is pretty amazing... it sounds like investors have sound reasoning to keep engineering market crashes and government bailouts... the country is literally broken, omg?

Parents in general? ha. That’s why we have gun control right? There’s been 45 days in 2018 so far and we’ve had 13 school shootings. That’s almost 1 every 3 days
Edit i read wrong, weve had 18. So almost one every two days

Speaking of schools, Frontline on PBS last night covered the administrations current gang crackdown policy on MS-13. They focused on Suffolk County, New York (Long Island) for this piece.
Authorities have scooped up and detained over 400 unaccompanied minors and deported 40 so far. These are brown boys who have committed offenses like writing the number 13 on their notebooks or have been seen around areas where gang members are known to linger. You know, typical criminal activity. Pretty eye opening stuff that's worth a watch.

What the fuck does Russia's economic status have to do with their ability to fuck with us from afar via technological means?
I ain't even arguing that anyway. If dems are overplaying Russia, you're sure as fuck downplaying it. At a minimum the Russia shit highlights major security concerns, which we're happily not addressing at all or even acknowledging, that could have impacts on future elections and national security. I would take umbrage about Russia's effects on the election but really don't feel like rehashing that shit.
Either way I think a general numbing to daily mass shooting is understandable.

high security concerns like what? they can't even keep their foot on ukraine because they can't afford to feed their soldiers there. and as for as cyber threats go, they're getting lapped by private and state groups all over the world - but most importantly, its not them those outside threats that are the concern, its the fact the fact that US cyber security has been and continues to be far behind the pace of everyone else.

Stormy Daniels is no longer bound by a non-disclosure contract after Mr Trump's lawyer admitted he paid her, manager Gina Rodriguez says.
Mr Trump's personal lawyer confirmed in a statement to media he privately paid Ms Daniels $130,000 (£95,000) in 2016.
Ms Rodriguez says that acknowledgement allows her client to speak freely.
"Everything is off now, and Stormy is going to tell her story," Ms Rodriguez told the Associated Press on Wednesday.
The Russia story is worth investigating insofar as if a country with such crude methods could sow so much confusion and discord in our politics, what would a more sophisticated attack look like? Would we even know?
So in a roundabout way you’re taking about the same thing.

http://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/census-counts-25502-unoccupied-homes-in-vancouver-more-than-double-the-estimate-by-city-hall
The latest census numbers for 2016 show there were 25,502 unoccupied or empty housing units in the City of Vancouver. For the uninformed Vancouver CA has some of the highest rent in the world.
That’s 15 per cent higher than recorded during the last census in 2011.
Urban planner Andy Yan of Simon Fraser University’s City Program compared census data for Vancouver over several decades to see how the percentage of “unoccupied” units or ones “occupied solely by foreign residents and/or temporary present residents on Census Day” has doubled during that time. In 1986, it was four percent. In 2016, it rose to 8.2 per cent.
“Exact definitions and measures have changed slightly over 30 years and patterns should be interpreted as directional,” Yan writes in a report, also released Wednesday.
For Vancouver, the direction is up. The city far outstrips other municipalities with 25,502 units that are unoccupied or owned by temporary or foreign residents. Yan said most of these were concentrated in three areas: Coal Harbour, Marine Gateway and Joyce-Collingwood. Surrey came in second at 11,195, Burnaby at 5,829 and Richmond at 4,021.
and that's not even getting into corporate espionage. i don't get why people think that's not more damaging than tampering with a voting box or throwing ballerinas at old white guys
Cities literally having to put "you can't airbnb this" into new development or sales of homes because we have created a system in which housing isn't a fundamental right but an investment with little to no regulation on ownership or usage and it's choking people out of residing where anywhere close to where they work. In parts of the Bay Area people commute in from the Central Valley because rent has hiked up so much.

https://sf.curbed.com/2018/1/26/16936328/toll-authority-bridge-price-hike
On Wednesday, the 21-member Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) unanimously approved raising rates on all Bay Area bridges except the Golden Gate Bridge (which BATA does not oversee) by 2022, which would result in a $9 fee for the Bay Bridge and $8 crossings for all other regional spans.
However, the new tolls will not go into effect unless voters in all Bay Area counties approve the hike in the June election.
The original authors of the measure say that it will generate some $4.5 billion toward funding transit projects across the region (possibly including finally extending BART to San Jose), but it remains to be seen whether or not voters will approve of using funds from daily drivers to fuel other forms of commuting.
I agree with DY. The Russia stuff, while pretty damn bad, get’s way too much airtime.
