By blackace Go To PostHow so? The ToS is very forgiving imoAs a rule I don't like censorship of any kind. Red flags go off in my head saying communism/facism 🤷 if what he did was illegal then that is domain of the government not the job of some faceless entity to decide what's ok for peoples consumption.

Red flags go off in my head saying communism/facism 🤷 if what he did was illegal then that is domain of the government not the job of some faceless entity to decide what's ok for peoples consumption.Sorry, man. It's not censorship to say a guy doesn't have a place on your private platform when he incites and propagates hateful conspiracy theories which have in the past lead to actual incidents. Frankly, it's cowardly that they let him have an outlet on their site for as they did. They have more of an obligation to the general public to stop things like pizzagate from spreading than they do protecting lunatics under the guise of free speech.
Frankly, Twitter doesn't do nearly enough to police their platform, so if you're all about "free speech," dawg, they got you covered by continuing to allow white nationalists, Russians infiltrating our elections, hate speech, etc.
That's fine man I'm not trying to change your mind. I personally don't like it as it's goes against what I believe in.
I mean fine but weren't Americans just bitching about these platforms influnencing politics? That much power is dangerous.
By Lunatic Go To PostI mean fine but weren't Americans just bitching about these platforms influnencing politics? That much power is dangerous. It isnt. You have a problem with infowars pushing out dangerous lies, with Twitter opting an algorithm making it easier for those who believe his lies continue to be trapped into a bubble where they only see what they want to see.
There's nothing wrong with censorship when the party you censor is actively using fear to line his pockets, and isn't ashamed to admit it.
edit: Hell, what we are talking about is equivalent to a ban on a messageboard for violating the TOS.
^pretty sure alex jones said there the democrats were going to start a civil war on july 4th or something lol
in many countries, that's terrorist talk ijs
i think the government removing portions of literature or outright banning it is more along the lines of true censorship. this is an independent platform evaluating what its priorities are and what's best for its users and deciding to enact a change of policy

Censorship and free speech don't extend to private forums. Companies can make any kind of call they want as it relates to what you can say or how you're allowed to use their service. My job can fire me for something I post on social media and that's not a civil rights violation, either.
Alex Jones doesn't deserve a platform. He spreads dangerous lies and inspired people to show up to a pizza parlor with a gun. He gets people to send nasty, hateful messages to the parents of dead children saying there was no shooting and their children were actors. In what universe should this guy get any air time anywhere?
There are times when I can see censorship even being a must for public safety in spite of the can of worms. We're seeing fucking shit like Measles outbreaks because of anti vax fuckery. Measles can kill. And if it doesn't, permanent damage.
I can't ever get behind the "I hate censorship/free speech bro" argument when it's about privately owned platforms/companies.

Yeah the amendment doesn't even apply when people cry out about it but even beyond that the so called "tests" of it are people like Alex jones really? Meanwhile you got whistleblowers and all kinds of people going to jail for legit leaks in the interests of public safety. Give a shit about the conspiracy peddling fuckheads brehs.

Guys I'm not saying your interpretation is wrong, in fact it may be right I'm just saying personally, at my core it goes against what I believe in.
By Lunatic Go To PostI mean legally yeah but as a concept it is troubling considering the power of the plaform. How's it different from how we would handle it here? Size of platform?
By Lunatic Go To PostGuys I'm not saying your interpretation is wrong, in fact it may be right I'm just saying personally, at my core it goes against what I believe in.all i can say is define your line a bit then i guess?
because again - alex jones could *easily* be defined as a terrorist/usurper in pretttttttty much any other country in the world. if a private company decides that's no longer okay under their umbrella, then simply removing his access to their services really can't be labeled as censorship. he can still yell from any other hilltop out there

By FermentedFungi Go To PostBanning someone from a privately owned site is the most capitalistic thing there is.I agree and there should be some other service to step up to fill this niche. Unfortunately Twitter is currently the the only real service that has that reach. Also these corporations actively work to prevent other startups from gaining a foothold. Crony capitalism is stifling innovation in America.

Also ... I hope all the red x’s boycott twitter in support of Jones. Would be so nice
Yeah I'm going to have to say the government can and should and does already step in when it comes to "freedom of speech" before it becomes action against the state or individuals. It's why they get up the ass of cults when they start amassing weapons and talking about doomsday prophecies.

You're contradicting yourself there my man. Do read on Alex Jones, his lies and how they have affected people. What he does is nefarious, and it's not like he believes in it either. He's doing it for money.
Edit: I found this from BBC
What had Jones said on Twitter?
Mr Jones mostly uses his Twitter account to share content and videos from InfoWars with his 850,000 followers, and promotes conspiracy theories against liberals, Muslims and migrants.
In July, he said that Democrats planned to launch a civil war on 4 July or US Independence Day
Last year, he tweeted that Muslims in England were demanding that the Queen either convert to Islam or leave the country. However, the CNN clip Infowars based its article on dates back to 2009 and features a group led by radical preacher Anjem Choudary, who by 2017 was already serving a five-and-a-half-year sentence for inviting support for the Islamic State group (IS)
He has previously said that "transgenderism" is a CIA "plan to depopulate humanity" and that the "normalisation of mental illness" is an "evil paedophile plot to sexualise and destroy children"
In 2013, he described then-President Barack Obama as the "global head of al-Qaeda", and later accused him of arming IS
