By zfzmikey Go To PostPeople can say this and that to rationalize, but ultimately, it's because I6 engines sound waaaaaaaaaaaay better. And they're inherently more balanced. Silky smooth power + sexy sound = win.Which is why it's so disappointing that the latest M3/M4 just sounds so dreadful.
And this, in a nutshell is why the E53 wins Detroit Auto Show for me. Turbo inline 6 is back, with a mild hybrid system to sort turbo lag. Should be pretty great. Hopefully it sounds good too.
Well, I guess there is still controversy about VW / Porsche ownership even to car aficionados.
🤔
Hm, anyone tint their car in Cali? My Z is not tinted and I'm wondering how dark I can go legally.

You can go lower most likely, it's basically a "fix-it" ticket if you get caught. I think my car is 30% or 35% and I think that looks just fine.
I got 50 up front and 15 in the back with a 5% strip on the windshield. Never been pulled over because of it. Yeah, just a fix it ticket.

Thats the holding group, Porsche(eg the cars) is a part of the VAG group. So basically Volkswagen owns Porsche but Volkswagen is owned by a holding group also called Porsche.

Fuck I guess that is putting off my purchase. Though I'm hoping that isn't the headlight styling. If it is I will shift my purchase over to a m340i or the amg version of the new merc aclass
By reilo Go To PostWell, they're mostly doing it for cost-effectiveness, since the world is moving away from V8s and to smaller engines, it's easier to assemble an I6 on the same assembly as an I4 (it's not exactly adding 2 extra cylinders, but you get the idea).
But more importantly, Mercedes (and BMW) have a long standing history of building I6 engines and they are fantastic. This is the added benefit of Mercedes going back to their roots.
Modular engine building is exactly why they're doing this actually. So you're right. You take a 2.0L I4, add 2 cylinders to it @ 500cc each, you have a 3.0L. Take that same 2.0L add a bank of cylinders to it, you get a 4.0L V8.

It doesn't work quite that way.
"The substantial investment in Volkswagen left Porsche with huge financial burden with its debts accumulating up to 13 billion euros by 2009.[79] Porsche would get emergency infusion of about a billion dollars from Volkswagen.[80] In July 2012, Volkswagen completed takeover of Porsche ending the 4 year saga and formed an integrated automotive group with Porsche. Porsche AG would become the 10th brand of Volkswagen. The holding company Porsche SE owns 31 percent shares of Volkswagen AG while maintaining its 50.7 percent of voting rights in the company.[81]"
Porsche as the sole entity own 31% of VAG, and that's with a $1B cash infusion loaned to them by VW, btw. They have 51% of voting rights, but not ownership. Huge difference. So no, Porsche does not own VW. And because they are a subsidiary, VW can cut them off and sell them if they choose to.
And why they have majority voting rights:
"In July 2012, it was announced that Volkswagen AG was taking over the Porsche AG automotive company completely, which bears the same name, but is only a subsidiary of Porsche SE.[26][37] In June 2013, Qatar Holdings, through the Qatar Investment Authority, sold its 10% holding in Porsche SE back to the founding family, giving them 100% voting rights in the holding company.[38] Porsche SE currently owns 50.73% of the voting rights in Volkswagen AG as the largest (controlling) shareholder."

It basically does everything well so even though it's the least expensive vehicle that I am currently planning on testing I still expect it to put in a strong showing. It might be one of those situations where, once I take a hard look at everything, I decide that it's enough car and that I really don't need to spend a lot more to get everything I want.
By AlphaSnacks Go To PostIt doesn't work quite that way. Thanks for the clarification, Alpha. I thought I remembered it being something like this but didn't have the time to really dig in to it this week. Suffice it to say, VW and Porsche have a close and complicated relationship.

My goal was to buy a mk8 gti but my current vw is still fun enough for me to drive it until it dies on me. Realistically I’m still 2-3 years away from my next vehicle purchase and there’s some great options out there within my budget.
I love that they muse that the E63 AMG makes 700hp lol
The damn thing did a 11.3s 1/4 mile at 4500lbs, and it also was 0.1s (you read that right) slower than a Cayman GTR (still reading it correctly) around the figure 8, wtf

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry with 255,000 miles as my daily driver that I'm actually more proud of than any other car I've had in my garage.
If people update their profile pics, I will too. I'm especially curious about that Sonata.

no, because they have more interesting stuff.
Autocar has learned that the decision has been taken to replace it, despite the tougher market for luxury saloons in the face of the rising popularity of luxury SUVs. However, it is being replaced not with a like-for-like model but with one that reinvents the very idea of a luxury saloon as an electric car and can act as a high-tech flagship for Jaguar.
Turning the XJ into an electric car is a bold move, but the model has always been an innovative one for Jaguar, not least its two most recent iterations. The X350-generation XJ, launched in 2003, was the first aluminium car from Jaguar and the X351, introduced in 2009 and still on sale now, completely broke away from the design themes that had largely followed the XJ since its 1968 launch. Reinventing the model as an EV, Jaguar argues, is the best way of keeping it relevant as the industry experiences an unprecedented level of change related to electrification.
Despite its close relationship to a model from Jaguar’s sister company Land Rover, the XJ will retain a sleek saloon profile, albeit with a switch from a four-door layout to a five-door.https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2019-jaguar-xj-be-reborn-high-tech-electric-flagship

Looks like Jaguar is gonna beat everyone to the all-electric platform punch and go directly at Tesla before BMW, Audi, or even Mercedes could.

Also, can the new Forester Hurry up and get here.
By giririsss Go To PostThey need to their sales are terrible. They're small but their recent output has been extremely well received and they've been growing at a near 25% YOY clip the last few years, which is great for them. Once the E-Pace and I-Pace hit full steam on the market (January and March, respectively), and this All Electric XJ come out, they should see some more growth. 2018 and 2019 should be a big year for them.
By reilo Go To Posthttps://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2019-jaguar-xj-be-reborn-high-tech-electric-flagshipGood for them. They have been doing some good stuff lately but that move would really help to set the XJ apart and put it up there with the Model S and Mission E. If they execute it as well as they did the F Pace then I could see it being very successful for them.
wow wtf

I hope Jaguar continues its upward trend as well. I think 2019-2020 once their electrified plans hit full steam. I absolutely love their sedans and sports cars. It brightens up my day whenever I see one on the highway while trudging to and from work. I think Alpha had some great pictures in the old GAF thread that were absolutely amazing. His car just passes on looks alone and looks like its moving while parked. We need more cars on the road like it.
I'm actually pro Jag as well. They've done a tremendous job of resuscitating themselves over the last few years and I absolutely want to see that continue because they have unique products that fill the niche a lot of other manufacturers seem to have forgotten about. Cough BMW cough
Say what you want about my GLK350, but it's damn near silent at highway speeds, super comfortable in stop and go, relatively quick and has a kick ass stereo in it. My complaints are extremely few. Better highway gas mileage, that's it.

Had a chance to test drive a 2018 M3 in Yas Marina Blue, 6MT, Competition Package.
Brakes are a bit touchy, steering still is worse than E90, but definitely better than the earlier F80s. To be honest, it felt like a modern M5. More like a fairly large powerhouse that was nicely planted and confidence inspiring than a true sports car.
Yas Marina Blue is easily one of my current fav colors though. So good in person.
(still wouldn't buy one new though, so many other better choices at that price)

Thanks.
And yeah, despite the car being 6 years old now, it gets more than its fair share of compliments whenever I have it parked curbside by a some outdoor dining.
My favorite compliment from last week: "I'd take that Jaguar over this Maserati anytime. Even if the Maserati was free."
The Masi was a Ghibli S. LMAO.
Honorable mention: "That looks Italian." *walks to the back* "XKR? Oh, there's the Jaguar badge. Wow, that's something to look at in the garage..."
I usually just sit there and keep eating, and not gloat. Things like that...every time the idea of selling the car crosses my mind, it's gone usually within a second. It's by far the best car I've ever owned, and the only thing that could replace it would be nothing short of a...Porsche GT3 6MT.

Again, that's just a gorgeous car. I know there are newer and more modern cars, but I rarely see your car. The last time I saw one was like 7 months ago for a concour tour around Napa Valley with other sports/super/exotic cars. Before that? A Jaguar dealership a year before that. So I say there's a reason it captures peoples' attention. It's beautiful and rare. I've seen more Aston Martin Vantages and DB9's in the Bay Area than your car.
For what it's worth, as much as I love a Porsche 991 GT3 (and I've seen my fair share on track and autocrossing)... your car is more special. Hopefully you can hold onto it for a while longer until a better car comes along.
