Oh nah, nothing crazy, just Auto parts driver and shuttle driver. Easy money while I go back to school since I don’t plan on staying there. Wish I could do something cool with cars though.
Detroit Auto Show news coverage starting to filter out to places like Jalopnik. Some of my favorite announcements so far would be the return of the Ford Ranger for 2019, the Bullitt Mustang (also 2019) and the new Jetta (which is now MQB based and has a much, much better interior).
Yeah the Jetta is nice and being based on the mqb platform is good. I wonder if the GLI version will use the same engine as the gti since the regular Jetta is using a 1.5liter turbo. The Passat GT is also kinda nice with its vr6.
The Ranger is pretty sweet as well.
The Ranger is pretty sweet as well.
So far it's been a bit of a bust for me. Passat GT is interesting, and I strangely enough kind of like the new Silverado front end (provided it's in a darker color.)
Glad to hear Acura will have a V6T. That should really help with the differentiation between it and Honda.
RDX has a great interior but continues the trend of being a fugly CUV. I want to be interested in the Ranger but it looks too much like a car for my tastes. Let's see what else pops up.

The "death" of the driving experience as a commodity will come soon ...

Yeah, that grille is on some serious "My car can eat a whole watermelon" type stuff. Rest of it looks a lot better than the old one though, although I'm not sure how the styling will play with old folks.
Still better than your average Lexus.

Wow, a GT500 announcement too!
The new Bullitt looks great...
But even more interesting, the original Bullitt Mustang from the 1968 film has been uncovered to pave the way for the introduction of the new car:
This article is definitely worth a read. The man who bought the car in the early 70s used it as a daily driver for years, and even turned down an offer to buy the car from Steve McQueen himself.

By Adam Go To PostPeople still supporting VW after all they did?I wouldn't say "support" as that might be too strong of a word. I hope they have learned their lesson and I see some reasons to think they want to win back consumer trust. The new 6 year 72,000 mile warranty is certainly a step in the right direction.
By Bandit1 Go To PostWow, a GT500 announcement too! What a fantastic article. I had no idea. Someone in this neck of the woods has one of the last Bullitt editions (2008?) and I drool a little every time I see and hear it. Something about that debadged look with that paint combo just does it for me. I wonder how limited this new one will be.

I guess. But it must be nice to have billions and get away with murder.
AFAIK VW never killed anyone, just did some scummy stuff to sidestep environmental regulations. They’ve got a less than stellar reliability record, though. But then the modern definition of bad reliability is an order of magnitude better than just 10 years ago
Did you huff diesel recently? Lmao.
VW's emission scandal hasn't killed anybody and it won't... the worst it can ever do is reduce the lifespan of somebody by maybe a couple of days.
Now Takata on the other hand... yeah, some new cars still have Takata airbags in them which is crazy imo.

By matmanx1 Go To PostBeing the enthusiast that I am I (like most of you, probably) spend a lot of time thinking about, reading about, watching videos of and daydreaming about cars...And that brings me to this question for anyone who cares to answer and has put some thought in to it; what does your "wishlist" vehicle look like? What's your ideal "next" car?
By zfzmikey Go To PostGood topic Matman.
I think it's pretty much impossible to get the perfect car. For me, the two (or three if you're a family/couple) car approach is the way to go. Utility vehicle, wife's vehicle, and my vehicle.
Great topic, Matmanx, and I agree with ZFzmikey. I don't think I could choose just one perfect car, but in today's environment, having a car for different needs is probably best.
I'm thinking two or three cars for a family will be great. One for utility, one for the spouse, one for my own enjoyment. I have no real preference for the utility or spouse car except for reliability and good enough comfort/luxury. If practicality is a big factor, then anything Toyota/Lexus like the new Toyota Camry or Lexus ES/GS series. If money wasn't a big issue, Porsche Macan. If I can just go all out, Bentley Bentyga for utlility and Rolls Royce Wraith for the spouse. For my own personal enjoyment, if practicality were an issue, then Mazda MX-5 ND. If I have enough money, Porsche 911 GT3 Touring Package or at least a Porsche 911 from 2012-2016 for the naturally aspirated engine without turbos. If money were not an issue, either a Porsche Carrera GT or Aston Martin DBS from 2016.
...I guess after all that, the list eventually became cars I wanted to drive. The most realistic ideal next car for me is probably a 911 from the 991.1 generation since I love the sound of the engine, ride quality, steering feel, and the pleasure of driving it. The backseats will be fine for emergencies or kids if/when I have them.
Congrats to Bubbaz as well. Toyota is awesome, I actually love their cars and their racing presence. They do what they do exceptionally well. That's not even taking into account their Lexus performance and sports cars like the RC-F, LFA, or LC500.
Also, I forgot my password for the longest time. I just recently found it and logged on. I miss listening to people here. NeoGAF/ResetERA isn't the same without the AutoGAF members.
The ideal car for me right now would be something along these lines:
RWD/RWD bias
2 doors - Im tall so having the B pillars further back seems great
6+ cylinders
Plug in hybrid
Proper gearbox - manual or dual-clutch
Affordable ;)
Something like a hybrid Mustang along these lines would be great, having that distint classic design coupled with future tech.

Somehow I missed the fact that Hyundai is giving us a "Veloster N" which is basically the mechanicals out of the i30 N from Europe but with the Veloster sheetmetal. On one hand I'm glad we're getting another "N" car (the other being the Kia Stinger) but on the other hand I would have rather had the i30 N just like Europe gets it, in hot hatch form.
The styling on the Veloster is just odd and that name certainly doesnt do it any favors. I'm still glad we're getting it though.

Going back to my big topic about the "ideal" car or cars I actually have a couple of ideas. The first one and the one I am investigating most strongly is to put all of my eggs in one basket, so to speak, and spend all or most of my budget on one great car that I can pretty much do everything with. In this scenario I might or might not need to keep the GX470 and would most certainly be selling or trading the MX-5. The Macan and the RS3 both fall into this category.
The second option would be to definitely keep the GX470 for utility / nasty weather days (like today when we got a half inch of snow and ice making it downright slippery out there) and pick up a true sports car like a 718 Cayman or M2 or maybe even an F-Type. Right now this one is a little bit less appealing to me simply because I would still be spending a lot of money on a car that would have to stay at home on some days, depending on the weather and other things. And that seems a shame although maybe it's something that I just need to get over and stop worrying about.
Finally I have also considered picking up something like a Golf R for a new, fun daily and then spending the rest of my budget on an older, used Porsche. I've always had soft spot for the 968 and the 928 and of course a 996 911 or first gen Cayman would also be worth considering. I would just have to be careful about not investing into a money pit.
Anyway, those are the thoughts for now but I'm still at the stage where it's all subject to change. We'll see what happens.

Owning a Porsche is what made me soften up on VW for sure. My Cayman is a rolling work of art, both in looks and how it drives. Granted, I still consider them to be basically completely different companies.
I definitely went with the SUV for hauling stuff (GLK350) and sports car for hauling ass (981 Cayman) route, and it's been good so far, but then it's only been a couple weeks. There are definitely times when I like having a comfortable, unobtrusive brick although every time I jump in the Cayman it's like the heavens have parted.

Nah, you're not being a hypocrite. VW and Porsche, while under the same family company, are completely different companies with different design and corporate philosophies.
Speaking of Porsche, here's a fairly cool, fairly short video about the last of the analog Porsche's; the 968, the 993 911 and the first gen Boxster. I love the 968 in this video and the wheels on that 911 are incredible. https://youtu.be/Y7hD5UElih8
Porsche actually owns the group. To say different design is somewhat disengenous as every Porsche looks like a squashed Beetle.

This will definitely derail into a heated conversation, so I'll just leave it at "I'll have to disagree".
To be fair, despite everything VW has done and gone through in the last several years, I still like some of their car designs. I still like the Golf GTI and Power Beetles. I even like their newer car designs like the Arteon.
I didn't even know bout their 6 year 72,000 mile warranty until someone mentioned it in this thread. I hope they can win back consumer trust in due time.
Porsche doesn't work in that type of silo, though. The two sides definitely share a ton of technology (and at times platforms) with each other's brands. The Macan utilizes VW's MLB/MLP platform which is shared across the different brands, but that's where the similarities start and end.
So if you like what Porsche does, there's not much reason to dislike what VW does, certain things not-withstanding.
EDIT: To clarify though, the MLB/MLP platform is mostly utilized between Audi and Porsche with some VW and other brand exceptions.

Yeah, it's because I drove a loaner Cayenne that I softened on VW/Audi, because there's a ton of shared tech there. On the other hand, my Cayman is in no way, shape or form a VW. Totally different things. And that's all I'm going to get into comparisons to a Beetle.

This isn't even exclusive to porsche/vw.
Dont the seat Leon, golf and a3 use exactly same engine?
Everybody shares architecture now. Lower end BMWs are sitting on Mini Cooper platforms, as many should know.
Jaguars are basically the current XF shrunk down to XE and modified for F-Pace. But that chassis, the X260, is an evolution of the X351 chassis from the current XJ. Next gen XJ will likely be dubbed the X360. Whereas, the F-Type is an evolution of my XKR's X150 platform, now called X152.

Did anyone find anything interesting or drooling over after the Detroit Auto Show? I didn't really find anything that spoke to me. I like the Mustang Bullitt, but that's all that stood out to me.
Geneva Auto Show is when shit will get real - Toyota is expected to reveal the Supra finally. And NY should be great too.
Now...I wonder when the fuck Nissan will unveil a new Z. I genuinely don't think they have one running. No mules have been spotted or anything.

The GTR and Z are both old as the hills at this point and we haven't heard any rumblings of worthy replacements for either of them. On the Infiniti side you have the Q cars, which show some promise, but otherwise it's pretty bleak for those of us who were fans of the old Z cars and NISMO in general.

By Lunatic Go To PostPorsche actually owns the group. To say different design is somewhat disengenous as every Porsche looks like a squashed Beetle.Actually that is incorrect. Porsche tried to take over VW Group and failed several years back. Porsche is part of the VW Group but does not own a controlling interest in it. They do share technologies but Porsche also has a lot of their own tech (the boxer motors they use are entirely their own, for example) and their "pure" sports cars the (718 twins and the 911 as well as the upcoming Mission E Electric) are entirely Porsche developed and built with almost no shared tech.
As far as looking like a squashed beetle goes, well, you are entitled to your opinion and I will leave it at that.
You sure lad?

Mercedes-Benz told a roundtable of journalists this week that the company would be dropping V6 engines in favor of inline-sixes.
By reilo Go To PostWhat's the difference between the two?
Well, they're mostly doing it for cost-effectiveness, since the world is moving away from V8s and to smaller engines, it's easier to assemble an I6 on the same assembly as an I4 (it's not exactly adding 2 extra cylinders, but you get the idea).
But more importantly, Mercedes (and BMW) have a long standing history of building I6 engines and they are fantastic. This is the added benefit of Mercedes going back to their roots.
