It's pretty outdated as the UI is probably a decade old. It supports iPhone integration and bluetooth just fine, but the navigation system is clunky and unclear. They had a refreshed system for the '16MY cars that's much cleaner and more responsive, plus they are adding CarPlay and Android Auto support with a retrofit. Gotta find out if I qualify.
I like the red stitching. I wish my Audi had the red stitching as that was one of the few options I did not get. Speaking of the Audi I asked for a trade appraisal on it today from one of my local Porsche dealerships. I feel like a bit of a traitor (maybe that's not the right word) because it's such a special car but I'm getting more convinced it's just not the right car for me and my situation.
The internet sales manager from the Porsche dealership and I had a geeky conversation on the phone about how good the motor was in the TTRS and RS3 and he said he had been shopping for an RS3 and therefore had a few questions. You could tell he was a real car guy. Anyway, we'll see what happens.

TTRS to Macan? That's a pretty weird transition. What about the RS makes it not a good fit? The size?
By zfzmikey Go To PostTTRS to Macan? That's a pretty weird transition. What about the RS makes it not a good fit? The size?In one way it's weird, in another way it isn't. The TTRS is basically a hot hatch and the Macan is Porsche's version of a hot hatch, intentionally or not. And I'm actually fine with the size of the TTRS. I have no gripes about the size.
Main gripe: transmission programming. In comfort or auto it wants to get into top gear as soon as possible and with light throttle application (which is mostly what I am doing if I am driving normally) it pulls power / timing and really slurs the shift. It reminds me of someone shifting a manual car quite slowly and carefully. You have to have the accelerator at 25% (not exact but somewhere around there) throttle or higher in order to get a crisp, quick shift. This behavior persists even when shifting manually and it drives me crazy.
Secondary gripe: Single large turbo means not much is happening below about 3500rpm. Combined with the transmission programming it makes the car feel quite lethargic unless you are keeping your foot into it and shifting manually. Consequently, driving like a lead-footed jerk is the only way to really have fun with the car. (Ideally I want a car that is fun and engaging even when driven normally / just puttering around)
Minor gripes: Alcantara steering wheel. No subwoofer / weird mid-bass boominess from the B&O system. 20" wheels with 30 ratio tires is too little rubber for my neck of the woods.
I don't honestly know if the Macan is a good fit or not. I've been primarily a sports car owner for more than a decade now and as good as the Macan GTS is will I find it too big and not sharp enough? I really don't know. I'm very curious to just drive it around in normal mode and see how it behaves because all of my previous experience with it has been on the track in Sport + mode. If the default PDK behavior is irritating then I might just decide that I need to go back to a manual for the car that I drive most often.
And on that note I do know that this same dealership has a 2018 CPO 911 Carrera base with the 7M/T at a great price (less than 10 grand difference in price between the Macan GTS and the Carrera) and I have already spoken to the sales manager about it as well. Depending on what they offer me on my trade today I may be taking a trip to see them as early as tomorrow.

It may turn out that neither one is really the answer that I have been looking for but I am going to give them both a serious look.
That new interior is fucking quality.
At the heart of every 911 is a rear-mounted flat-six engine. These days, in every model save for the GT3 and GT3 RS, the engine is assisted by a pair of turbochargers. The 2020 Carrera S and all-wheel-drive Carrera 4S use an updated version of the 3.0-liter flat six from the 991.2. The engine makes 443 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque, up 23 horsepower and 22 pound-feet over the outgoing model. Improvements include larger turbos, a new intercooler and new injectors. Standard equipment includes a new eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission (one more than the 991). A manual will be offered sometime later for those who still prefer to row their own.0-60 in 3.3 seconds for a Carrera S lol
Extra power means improved performance. With the PDK, a Carrera S Coupe hits 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The Carrera 4S drops that by a tenth. That's 0.4 seconds quicker than the outgoing model. Cars with the optional Sport Chrono package are even quicker, with 0-to-60 times dropping to 3.3 seconds in the Carrera S and 3.2 seconds in the Carrera 4S. The Carrera S has a top speed of 191 mph, with the 4S topping out at 190.
911 looking more and more like a GT car. Not really a knock, everything gets bigger over time.
The Macan is a very capable car, but like any very capable and comfortable car, you'll acclimate to it and it will be just like anything else on normal commuting trips. Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy to have one as a winter beater and general commute car. But I can't see a world where getting in it every day makes you smile for years.

My Miata, as noisy as it was and even with the driving position that never quite worked for me, was always engaging. If I got the 911 I would have to spend some extra coin and dynamat the wheel wells and under the carpets. I like exhaust and engine noise but am less enamored with road and tire noise but thankfully that is a problem with a fairly easy solution.

I think the Audi went a little bit too far in terms of refinement which goes back to my earlier comment about not being all that fun unless you are hammering on it. There's a sweet spot there and that's what I'm looking for.
By reilo Go To PostI like everything but that center screen and console. The shifter in particular looks a bit Prius like. The center screen and dash line looks very Lexus like which is classy but not (to me, anyway) sporty.
That new interior is fucking quality.
0-60 in 3.3 seconds for a Carrera S lol
Edit - I just noticed the most earthshattering change and it isn't the screen, console or dash. It's the cup holder at the back of the center console! No more swing out cup holders!
The GT Concept’s guts are a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery pack paired with two motors, one to each axle, making for an all-wheel drive layout. Audi claims it can bolt from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, hit 124 mph in a little over 12 seconds, and maxes out at a responsible 149 mph top speed
Yea, that's already been confirmed that the two are co-developed by Porsche and Audi.
I still can't believe how many brand new Model Ss I see with mis-aligned body panels. It's staggering, really.

By AlphaSnacks Go To PostNew 911 interior looks awesome. Great looking car. Can't believe how stupid fast they've become.Speaking of 911's, I drove one today. The 2018 I linked previously which was a base Carrera with the 7 speed stick. I liked it but I didn't fall in love with it. The best thing about it to me was torque shove all across the rev range in a motor that still likes to rev out to 7 grand plus. Snapping off a gear shift and revving it out could be habit forming although I would probably like shorter gearing like in the Carrera T if I were going to own one.
It was a nice car but felt less substantial than the TTRS and was much louder at speed (tons of road noise, even with the 19" wheel option) and of course the interior was a step back from the TTRS also (though still nice).
The Macan GTS however, that one spoke to me. It somehow finds the sweet spot and blends in a great driving car with a quiet and smooth ride (unless you turn on the sport exhaust and then it sounds aggressive). It feels substantial yet changes directions quickly and with agility. I said it back in the day when I first drove a Macan GTS at the Experience Center that I can't wrap my mind around how Porsche made a nearly 4500 pound crossover handle and feel like that. It's not 911 levels of sportscar but it clearly carries the same "feel" and DNA in a much more comfortable and usable configuration. So I bought it! Below are a couple of photos and the original build sheet.
I think it's fun even when just cruising along or driving slowly. I should have just bought one of these to begin with but I talked myself out of it. Oh well. I saved over 10 thousand off the new sticker plus got the 2 additional years of CPO warranty by purchasing it now so it's all good.
Thanks! Just judging from my co-workers reactions today it is 100% better than the TTRS at initiating rides and conversations. Literally everyone I work with has wanted to poke around it, sit inside it, talk about it or go for a ride in it (it's a small firm, but still). Whereas with the Audi they noticed it and commented on it with this they seem to be drawn to it much more. None of them are car people so its likely the difference between a small, brightly colored sports car and a more normal looking but classy SUV/crossover with the Porsche badge, but still!
And I will say I didn't expect the Porsche PCM to be as good or as user friendly as I have found it. I'm figuring things out much more quickly than I did with the Virtual Cockpit. I think Audi's tech is more powerful and better looking but the Porsche is no slouch and, so far, more intuitive.

Looking at mini's with the gf as she will have to replace her nearly decade one very shortly. Neat little cars, but I don't think I would enjoy owning one.
Still, this is making me anxious for my Cayman to come in. I'm getting kinda nervous about it for some reason. Lol
I looked up all the options just to confirm that I ordered what I wanted (I did). Can't wait to get it and just experience that ride and manual transmission.

Congrats on the Macan!
One thing I've learned from buying 2 cars is that you always gotta go with what you want. Buyer's remorse sucks and is difficult to deal with since cars are expensive and their value goes down immediately.

Definitely. What worked out in my favor is that I had gotten such a good deal on the initial purchase price of the TTRS that my trade in allowance was close (but not quite) what I owed on it. They also came down a little bit on the sale price of the Macan, so that also helped. Usually at less than 6 months into ownership of a new car I would be massively upside down in terms of what I still owed versus the trade value but in this one case it worked out decently well. Still, it's not something I would recommend doing.
My biggest regret was actually the two grand I spent at the detailer getting the Xpel and ceramic protection done but I lucked out in that this Macan already has the frontal clear bra which is really the most critical spot to have the ppf. I'll have the ceramic coating applied at some point just because it makes cleaning the car so much easier but I am not in a hurry and that will be much cheaper.
By AlphaSnacks Go To PostKinda a little sad Mat sold the TTRS
Yeah, it is a special car and very unique. In my time of ownership I saw exactly one other TTRS one day while on I-75 going the opposite direction. It also sounds like nothing else on the road. If I could have afforded both the Macan and the TTRS I would have kept it and used it as it was intended - like a true sports car. I sincerely hope it will go to a good home.
Wow, lots of amazing stuff in here lately.
That F-Type R is a work of art, like all of them are. And I'm of course a big fan of the Macan. I'd either own one of those or a GLC63 if I was a single car person. Sometimes I think that might be a better route but it's hard to say. Either direction you have to make compromises unless you're stupid rich, and I'm well off but not there yet.
Of course, I want my next purchase to be electric. They're definitely getting there on the usability factor but you'd definitely still need to own a house to make it worthwhile. The Taycan and E-Tron GT are both damn sexy in concept form and 200 miles of range in 20 minutes is plenty if the infrastructure can catch up but that's also a ways off.
Eventually, maybe a PHEV SUV (if they make one with 60-70 miles of range) and an electric sports car? Hard to say exactly how to do such things.
I got to ride around in a Model 3 the other day. Seems to drive really well and the rolling acceleration is awesome but the interior is cheap as heck outside the seats and the center display. Not for me but I definitely get the appeal.

Incoming photo dump. The Macan is handsome but it definitely looks better in motion and in person than it does in pics. That being said...
From the outside and in this color combination it's definitely a bit of a stealth fighter in grays and blacks. My wife has already referred to it as "Smokey" (actually what she said was "he's smokey and you're the bandit for buying it" - haha) so maybe that name will stick.
I took it for a proper shakedown today on some of my favorite roads and it easily handles all of the tough spots carrying all of the speed that I could reasonably want. It does feel larger than the TTRS but it's also really easy to place and the chassis is more playful with the added benefit of superior visibility and the most comfortable sport seats that I have yet experienced.

The Plainfield Police, in conjunction with the Will County States Attorney’s Office, began an extensive investigation in mid-August after possible criminal activity related to the dangerous operation of motor vehicles was discovered on social media.
The investigation led to the issuance of 7seven arrest warrants for Paul R. Powell, 35, of the 24000 block of Prairie Grove Drive, Plainfield, IL. Powell was arrested this morning without incident. Powell was charged with: 15 counts of street racing and one count of child endangerment.
Powell’s bond was set at $400,000, and Powell was transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

I wonder how disingenuous the price list on the Tesla website will be now. "ONLY $52,000*
*base price $65,000 with $13,000 value in feeling superior than other people, also free obnoxious customized plates
I'm typically against a large number of subsidies, but I've heard some pretty convincing arguments as to why EVs should continue to get them.
The best is really evident when you think about it. Combustion engine cars do get subsidies in the form of externalized cost of operating the vehicle. The damage/pollution caused by operating it is not accounted for in the cost of the vehicle.
It'd be neat if we could put a rough figure on that, but that seems like it'd be impossible.

EV's are one thing but what really needs the investment is the infrastructure. I hope the Taycan is wildly successful (and I heard today that Porsche's CEO has already stated they are increasing their production numbers based on strong pre-orders) and that it and other vehicles like it will spur spending and development of an EV friendly grid.
We had 220v outlets installed in the garage when we built it in anticipation of an eventual electric or hybrid vehicle but even if we had one now we're rural enough that it still might be an issue in terms of range and charger availability depending on where we were going.
I look forward to the day when EV's are prevalent enough that even small towns and rural areas will have charging stations just like we have mom and pop gas stations now.

GoPro footage of a drive in the Macan yesterday. The audio is better than I expected (that little mic in the GoPro is a champ) but unfortunately the video quality is washed out at some points due to the bright sunshine. Cayman is getting so close now and I am just as excited as can be. Especially after seeing all those pictures and the video of matman's Macan.
Briefly looked up some insurance quotes and I will probably be switching from State Farm. A quick look at Progressive has me paying only an extra $900 per year to add the Cayman to my existing car. Too bad I'm a big dummy and just finished paying for six months of insurance on my Sonata so it will be more work for me to do comparisons to save the most money and hopefully not have to duplicate insurance.

Pretty much exactly my thoughts on EVs. I've sorta accepted ICE is going away but electric needs to be as ubiquitous as gas stations before it can really take off. There's areas in Texas where I'd rather not get caught with a dead car lol.
