Orange County isn't cheap. I'm curious what kind of a pay cut I would have to take to get to Texas.

The too big to fail bank I work for Wells Fargo would be 10% less in Dallas or Houston as compared to LA and 20% less as compared to San Francisco.

By Apollo Go To PostJoin me on the mid-century-is-the-best-design-era train.
Mid Century design is "modern" though kinda
Kinda. Most apartments (even the ones in that video) don't really adhere to 100% utilitarian principles and kind of just follow a pattern where they keep surfaces and layouts simple. There's much more to mid-century modern design besides getting rid of crown molding that gives it a healthy character that apartments like the above just lack.
By Fenderputty Go To PostMid Century design is "modern" though kinda
Not really. Modern design has less colors especially in home decor.

Gonna redo my bedroom next month, picked out this frame and bedding:
Also got some blackboard wallpaper for one of my walls that I will decorate with, and finally put up some art work that I purchased years ago but never framed. Need to figure out a good console/dresser to accent with, but I am thinking it'll be more of a console so I can have books and such on it. Probably will look to have some clean sliding shades for the window as the drapes that the place came with are bad.

Don't be insulting, this is obvious: http://www.dwr.com/dining-dinnerware/heller-dinnerware-set/1075.html
I'm into craftsman and built ins. I like not having to put a shit ton of furniture in a room just to store shit. Once they started going the way of no built ins ugh. Far as non-architectural I've just got photographs up that people would find boring but it's something. Also tapestries in various spots. Love me some tapestries. I inherited some mission style craftsman furniture I'm pretty partial to.

Granted, I don't store much in there because it's so thin, but it's next to the toilet and I put stuff like air-fresheners, q-tips, and toilet paper there. Frees up room in the closet (not visible in the picture) and under the sink for towels, hamper, extra supplies, blow dryer, more facial hair care stuff, etc.
The door at the bottom part is really just a fancy access panel to the pipes behind the bath/shower.

I suppose. I think would still argue modern design pulls heavily from mid century. Including the colors as accents, even if it's more muted overall. The clean lines and wood look of both time periods are pulling from Frank Loyd Wrights era, at least from a layman's perspective.

I love craftsman homes, just not what I personally want as my own if that makes sense. There's a bunch in so cal though. Unfortunately they all need new electrical and plumbing so like F that noise.

Also,
If i were to move to the USA, housing prices would be a huge factor in where i accepted a job. I could deal with Texas heat, but I can't be surrounded by biggots / racists. And Texas seems to house a lot of stupid, and stupid that dumbs down its school system. But the cost of housing out there is just amazing. Houses that cost 1.5M here, cost less than what my apartment is worth.
Cali is impossible to buy a house in. And after almost 10 years of apartment living, I'm looking for a house. I also do enjoy being near the beach.
NY would be fun if i were 20, but no real desire for that fight for space now.
I'm also not a fan of shitty public transport, and that seems pretty staple in america.

If there even is public transportation.
e: There's only so much I can do with my house as it was originally built as a hunting camp like forty or fifty years ago, then was lifted up on 10 foot tall cinder blocks and had an expansion and wrap-around porch added on. I would basically need to build a new house entirely if I wanted something really nice because none of it is built to any standard, either. Even the expansion uses different standards than the rest.

Where's your actual lot of land? Where is it in relation to civilization? Is it close to utilities or would you need a well / septic / generator / solar systems?

The major cities in Texas are blue and liberal. Houston had a gay female mayor and now we have a black mayor.
It's when you get away from decent size cities that you run more into some of that, and Texas is huge.
By Fenderputty Go To PostI love craftsman homes, just not what I personally want as my own if that makes sense. There's a bunch in so cal though. Unfortunately they all need new electrical and plumbing so like F that noise.Yeah it's what happens with Craftsmans because they're old, lead pipes, knob and tube. They're built with good bones though and sturdy. A ton will need foundation repairs as well cause again, OLD. Also sometimes the closet space and bathrooms is just yikes. But they have a lot of character. My current place the living room looks a lot like this one. Except more books, pottery and urns on those shelves.
Wouldn't mind getting a contractor to put some built ins in the dining room though. But at least it's got a nice bench.
By Fenderputty Go To PostWhere's your actual lot of land? Where is it in relation to civilization? Is it close to utilities or would you need a well / septic / generator / solar systems? Is this question intended for me? I'll answer it as if it is cuz y not?
Yeah, my lot of land is about a 15 mile drive to the nearest Wal-Mart, if that gives you an indication of how far out from civilization it is. I rarely need to go into town, though, because there is a pharmacy, vet, restaurants (mexican, steak, two seafood.... and a subway), gas station, car wash, and a good sized corner store that is well-stocked for groceries.
IIRC, the house is about 900 sq ft (two bed, one bath, open floor living room + dining room + kitchen) and the lot is about four times that size. River on one end and highway on the other with neighbors on each side. No fences, but it isn't exactly a neighborhood so no home owner's association.
Yeah, water, power, and internet (fiber, even!) are all routed out here. I have a septic tank under the ground on the property.
There is a completely empty lot I inherited about six miles away that is at least twice the size of my current lot but it isn't on the river and it hasn't been developed, at all. If I ever start a family, I probably will build on it, though, as this place is too small to comfortably house two parents and a kid.

You should just call the elites "Chad" from now on so they know why you're gunning for them

This is the lot I was wondering about. You told us at the meet up about it a little. Still, it sounds close enough to civ that bringing utilities into the lot won't be that hard.
It would be a dream of mine to design and build a house from the ground up.
