im managing up to 16TB of data for some films i work on at times.
diehard, i just bought a t7500 2x Xeon 5680s on Ebay, recommend me controller and HDDs breh. :)
do you really need fast sequential data? Raid 0 in the real world will do almost nothing for anything limited by IOPS. I would at least try to get an SSD for scratch video files.
Hardware RAID controllers with cache and a BBU are super expensive, but fortunately people get rid of older ones from used servers for really low prices on eBay. Get one with SAS and use a breakout cable to connect SATA drives. I'll recommend one if you let me know more about what you are doing.
How concerned are you about data integrity and redundancy? To get 16TB you would have to stripe a decent amount of drives and multiple drives in RAID0 is just asking to lose all data. RAID5 suffers from the "write hole" and a RAID6 needs a RAID controller with cache and preferably a BBU.
Lemme know more about what you want and your budget and i can recommend some drives.

My condolences.
I do get to build some pretty awesome SAN's. Also i'm the vSphere admin cause its a fairly small company (500 people).

Talk to me when you've got over six 10TB hard drives of "data".
Who in the fuck do I complain to about the lack of AAA Android flagships at the 4.7 inch range without five-year-old-kid resolution. FOH with 720p in 2016.
I need at least 1080p, 430 PPI, and 520 nits of brightness to even consider a device with a solid software update trajectory not longer than four months post Nexus launch.

i'm not too worried about losing data as the HDD i receive from clients and producers are copies.
I do have SSD for scratch, and OS on a separate SSD.
as for a SAS with a breakout cable, can you recommend one?
im think geting 2x6TB 7200RPMs HDDs to start with.

its the standard RAID card for the T7500

do you know the chipset on that controller? you have to be careful with some of those older ones because they will only support 2TB drives. The card has to support READ16/WRITE16 in order for it to address larger than 2TB drives. If its an LSI controller you will need something at least starting in the 2000 series, LSI supplies the controller to lots of people. Here is a list of cards with their chipset. https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/lsi-raid-controller-and-hba-complete-listing-plus-oem-models.599/
This is essentially still a "modern" controller that is new in box http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-IN-BOX-LSI-Logic-MegaRAID-9240-8i-8-port-SAS-SATA-RAID-Controller-LSI00200-/321478095673?hash=item4ad9967339:g:U3QAAOSwgQ9VuxYc Grab a SFF8087 to SATA forward breakout cable and you are good, ebay has them for like 6-10 bucks, monoprice has new ones for $15.
Since you are only doing RAID0 and want sequential speeds, neither cache or a battery will do you much good.
For drives, either pick your favorite brand of 7200RPM drive or forget the SATA and grab a couple Seagate ST4000NM0023 SAS drives, Amazon sellers have them for $160.

By Retro Go To PostWhy tho?
I never understood the mentality behind hoarding digital content
If for some odd reason your internet connection goes out due to a disaster then you have enough content to power through the downtime. I've got 8 gigs of epub web novels. Let that sink in for a second.
I have netflix but I don't need it until I go through all of the files on my computer. It's more of a luxury than a necessity. Message boards keep me up on the hottest shows that I need to "purchase".
I asked elsewhere but want seconds opinions. This is my current setup and I want to upgrade pretty much everything except the case and the graphic card. I will also keep my harddrives but get a 1tb SSD. Anyting worth keeping (like PSU?).
Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz 6MB S-1155
Intel DP67BGB3 ATX S-1155
8GB DDR3 1600MHz Kingston HyperX (4x2GB)
GTX970 (only thing together with more space I've upgraded from when I bought it)
Cooler Master HAF 922 u/PSU
750W Corsair TX CMPSU-750TXEU 140mm
1TB Samsung 7200rpm 32MB SATA2

I'm not saying don't download anything. I don't really like streaming much myself.
but I mean unless you preparing for a 20 year power outage it just seems excessive to download that much shit lol
and you paying for netflix on top of it all? bruh...

Yeah Netflix is redundant as I've used it a grand total of 5 times in 17 months. I'm good with "purchasing" select shows a week, downloading podcasts, and surfing the web. It's how I've survived over a decade without cable... well back then there weren't podcasts and netflix but I made do.
Can someone hand me a cookie for cutting the cord before it became the cool thing to do? I conceptualized an Apple TV in 2007 before the content channels were available too but no one gets credit unless the patents and paperwork goes through. *sighs wistfully*

This was what I was also mostly in doubt over, if it would be worth anything upgrading. I will keep it. Thanks.
What is there to look out for in 4k TVs aside from the resolution?

Better safe than sorry.
I ended up buying a monitor to plug my MacBook Pro 2015 into since I mainly use it at home. I found an Asus VX228H on sale for $159, then ended up buying a mouse (Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX 2) and a keyboard (Logitech K380). Already knew what I was getting with the Anywhere Mouse MX 2 but the K380 keyboard surprised me. It's awesome, wireless and works on up to 3 devices and runs in triple A batteries, supposed to last 2 years on those.
Having dual monitors at my office ruined me, I much prefer it now over the smaller laptop screen.

Haz: How is the monitor with Apple stuff?
I'm going to have to get a MBP for work soon, will be wanting to use 2 full sized monitors with it, but really don't want to pay for 2 x apple cinema displays. Cause that shit is EXPENSIVE.

It was pretty painless actually. I have a 2015 MBP, so I just used HDMI to HDMI. If you have an older MBP without HDMI, then you'd need an adapter to plug in via VGA/Display Port (I presume, didn't look into this option).
This is what my setup ended up looking like:
Plus, here's the link to the monitor. I picked it up form Best Buy Canada, so it's likely cheaper in the US.

I've just heard a lot from people that apple had purposefully left some "features" out of external monitor support that weren't using the full thunderbolt port (just using it as a display port) and even the HDMI port.
Stuff like, no font smoothing.

I just really wanted a bigger display.
Particularly if your mac has a retina screen.
Seems the way that fonts are rendered / designed for the retina display makes them looks ... messy on non-retina displays.
And it's got nothing to do with the monitor being bad, usually it's a apple software thing.
I upgraded to what I wrote up there, except ended up going with a 500gb ssd, instead of one tb. What a fucking difference, loving it.
Oh yeah, getting an SSD might be like the most cost-effective upgrade on one's experience .. since like ever.
I used to have one of the very early ones, 128gb. It was good for a while, but after a few years it started crapping up the whole system with freezes and what not. So had a few years without one which was rough going back to.
I've got 2 SSDs
A 160GB Intel that I got when I built back in summer of 2011. I think it was damn near 300 at the time, and a 750GB Samsung Evo. Also have a 2 TB HDD.
Eventually I wanna just go SSD in my entire rig. May do it when I do a refresh this year.
Also I didn't know diehard was a storage admin. I think he would die if he saw the amount our HPC environment has.

ive actually not been too hype for any more SSD--so long as my OS and browsers are on it I've been pretty much good on loading times in games
