The pricing being all over the place makes it painful, but once you buy a XX80 class card, it’s hard to justify upgrading to anything below a XX80 card in the future
There's no going back with any of this shit. Only thing that can stop me is financial ruin. Forever a slave to technology.

Spent the morning looking at OLED ultrawide monitors. Hurts my brain that they’re so cheap compared to the Acer X27 I bought 6 years ago. I paid £1750 for that back in the day, I could get a 65 inch OLED TV for that money now. Or two 34 inch 21:9 OLEDs.
Currently looking at the Samsung G8 OLED 34 inch and LG 45GR95QE 45 inch.
Anyone know anything glaringly wrong with either? ZABBBBBO?!
Leaning towards the Samsung at £910. The LG is £1090, and I’m not sure 3440x1440 will look too hot on a 45 inch screen.

Apple tax is incredible, and there are people that will pay this.
Vision Pro - 256 GB - $3499 ($291.68 for 12 months)
Vision Pro - 512 GB - $3699 ($308.25 for 12 months)

By HottestGrapes Go To PostThink this is the one for me, unless something massively better comes out for the same £900-£950.All I know about the G8 is that Samsung are a bit wishy-washy when it comes to burn-in warranty, while the Alienware counterpart gets you a proper 3 year burn-in protection. I think it's a bit of an awkward time to be looking at 1st gen OLED ultawides with 3rd gen QD-OLED and MLA WOLED 21:9 panels right around the corner. Unless you can get it for a substantial discount ... which apparently you can't, if that's still the price.
In 3 months time you'll be looking at considerably better ultrawide monitors that will go for 1100-1300€. I'd wait a bit longer.
Agreed on the 45" variants. 3440x1440 is fine at 34", but that's the upper limit. It's really weird how everyone skipped 3840x1600 and went straight from 1440p to 5120x2160 ultrawides.

Realistically, I could do with buying a new couch and a better TV for the living room, so I might have to sit on it for a few months.
Still gonna keep my eye out for the G8, if it has a bigger discount I'd rather go with saving a bit. Penitence for spending too much on the early 4K/144hz monitors in my past life.
By JesalR Go To PostThe Alienware is down to £670 on Dell
At this price it's a no brainer, 240hz be damned. What's got you so interested in the G8, Vapes? Surely not the smart features?
I mean, it's 10hz.
I hear you on the Amazon purchase, but if the DWF can really be had for 300 'beths less ... it's either that or wait for 240hz models imo.
1st gen QD-OLED panels seem to be significantly more susceptible to burn-in than WOLEDs as well, so that 3 year warranty could definitely come in handy. In the (un)fortunate case your monitor develops an issue, say in a year or two, they might even upgrade you to one of the new ones.

I had a stuck pixel and Dell sent me a replacement. Since it was over a year into owning it, I don't think I would have gotten anything from Amazon
Also, separately, if you happen to have an Amex, they've got a £100 cashback on a £750 spend at Dell

Done more research on the OLED ultrawide monitors. They have fucking fans in them?!
So the Alienware Freesync model is the cheapest, the MSI model is fairly identical. The Samsung G8 apparently has the quietest fan, has/had issues with HDR on AMD cards and is also the most expensive.
Cheapest the G8 had been is £800.
The new models soon to release, are they fanless or is that unknown at this point?

I would guess they'll still have fans.
I haven't ever heard it in the two Alienware Freesync models I have, but apparently some people get coil whine. More prevalent in the GSync model too.

I have trust issues with active cooling on monitors thanks to the Acer X27. That seemed fine at first too, barely audible on my first few weeks with it in the winter of 2018.
Then it got slightly louder over time, and a lot louder in the summer. After a couple years it was louder than my PC at the time.
A pain to clean out the dust too because the VESA mount covered most of it he fan area.

Anecdotal, but I haven't heard my brother complain about fan noise once in the past 12 months. DWF owner.
I'm pretty sure I heard or read someone commenting on how at least some of the newer models ditched the fan.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a fanless NAS/HTPC I can use to run a bunch of virtualized stuff on and has a couple 10 Gbe NICs in it? Closest I've found so far is this guy:
https://www.asustor.com/en/product?p_id=79
Gonna be used to test a bunch of security products, probably run a firewall and backups.
Incredible price but 2.5 Gbe doesn't cut it and neither does the CPU really.

Other than build it yourself? No, not really. And you are going to want fans for the storage, most likely.
That much stuff and fanless is high requirement.
If it exists it would probably labeled as an "industrial PC". Supposedly the SolidRun V3000 can have what you are wanting. I don't see 10gbe as an option on ones from the company I'm familiar with (OnLogic).
If fanless isn't really a requirement maybe look at this guy: https://www.servethehome.com/minisforum-ms-01-review-the-10gbe-with-pcie-slot-mini-pc-intel/
building a mini-ITX computer in fanless case might be the way to go though

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at. Space is somewhat at a premium and it'd have to sit in my living room. Fanless isn't a 100% requirement but I suspect I'm attempting to build something of a unicorn here. All this is thanks to me finally getting 3 gig fiber internet I can expand to 8 if I want to. Finally makes sense to go 10Gbe to a server and run NAS/backups/VMs off it. But getting it built is kinda interesting.

Is there not a closet or side room to put the server in?
e: also, i'm not sure if there are many passively cooled 10Gbe switches... keep in mind that it is 4x2.5Gbe joined together so there is also a latency penalty that might be a little unexpected. not a big enough one to worry about in 99.999% of use cases, though.

Not if I want to plug it in 10 Gbe there isn't. It's a very old house with lathe and plaster walls too so fishing cat6 anywhere... would not be all that feasible without some serious demoing AKA not worth the effort. Gotta go in the entertainment center with all the consoles. I mean, I can run it through my Wifi 6e router but... why?
You can get 10 gig switches fanless now. I have a 5 port one that works fine and that's more than enough ports for what I want.

By diehard Go To PostEh?Sorry, I think I was confusing some implementations of 10GBase-T (???) with all 10G connections. Iirc, some switches internally combine four lanes of 2.5G to create a 10G port. But I am also going off half-tempered forum postings and YouTube videos.
Cat knocked the bloody external HDD off the top of my computer while it was spinning 😞.
It's still working but the scratching noise is a death rattle so I'm going to get as much off it as I can before it gives up completely
Anyone have a recommendation for a 4TB nvme? I already have an enclosure

Avoid QLC if you are going to be writing to it a lot or writing large files. Otherwise, you should be good. Samsung, TeamGroup, WD, etc all make decent drives now. It’s a commoditized tech so just get a name brand with a decent warranty and you’ll be happy.
For specific recommendations, I see the Crucial P5 Plus (might be called the T500 now), Samsung 980/990, and the Western Digital Black 770 and 850X mentioned a good bit.
E: since this is going into an enclosure, I wonder if a drive with onboard memory/dram might be beneficial? I’m not particularly certain on this
I can't remember who was asking about 10G stuff, but servethehope reviewed some affordable options for add-in cards: https://www.servethehome.com/qfly-10gbase-t-marvell-aqc113-adapter-mini-review/
Got a 4tb Samsung to replace the 2tb external drive. Got the important stuff off the old drive but can't get my 100% legally obtained movie collection.

There are others, but Asus Azoth, Keychron K2 Pro, Keychron Q1 Pro, and Redragon K649 are all available at Microcenter, which has a DIY keyboard section now. I think you are still close to one where you are at.

Oh the joys of having a physical computer shop to browse and buy from. Something completely alien for most pf us in the UK.
The last time I saw a GPU in a shop, a Game store in Liverpool were selling a GTX 570 for £300 new. In 2015.

I find it amusing that AMD stays committed to keeping their software like FSR open source when it continually benefits Nvidia customers more than AMD.
FSR3 mods being Nvidia RTX GPU only is a great example.
