By Willkiller Go To PostWhich is sad, but completely fair. I don't think it's an insane opinion to say at least in the late 90s early 00s that Newcastle were a very popular team for football fans around the country. That certainly disappeared to an extent over time but I think a lot of sympathy remained that perhaps didn't really exist for other clubs that were going through difficult periods. That I'd imagine has largely vanished now with yeah a "fuck Newcastle" position, which I get.
I mean I'd feel the same if another club had been taken over by the same people, but that's just how it is, the reason I can't just walk away from Newcastle is very complex but basically boils down to a very deep emotional connection I've had with the club all my life.
Sportswashing is an incredibly effective tool.
I completely understand that. United are owned by Trump donors. It’s easier for me to separate that because it’s United, I guess, but it’s still not the extent it is with you lot.
I’d like to think I could walk away from United if they were bought as a sportswashing exercise, but it’s easier said than done.
Just FYI, I always had a soft spot for Newcastle because of my mum’s side. Seen them at St James a few times, seen them away once or twice. Went to Kluivert’s debut. Got Bobby Robson’s autograph.
But fuck ‘em.
But fuck ‘em.
By n8 dogg Go To PostYep yep yepIt's fascinating actually when you stop and look at the history of English football prior to Abramovich's takeover and you can split up the characteristics of his ownership into two main halves 1) foreign ownership and 2) exorbitant spending. Both in isolation aren't exactly new - first PL foreign owner came in 1997 with Fulham and English clubs spending bigly to win the league also isn't new - such as Blackburn in 94/95.
Think Chelsea got more heat, lol. I guess they were first.
But I think Abramovich is notable for essentially creating and perfecting a kind of business model and template for other foreign investors to come in and opened the floodgates to this particular business model. It's still debated what reasons precisely Abramovich bought the club - whether that be sports washing (kind of doubt this myself since no one knew him before the purchase) or to launder his money into some kind of legitimate enterprise and/or protect himself from the Russian state.
Then you've got City and PSG that take what was already there to an entirely new level - now you have state-owned companies fuelled by sovereign wealth reaching to nearly a trillion dollars worth of assets buying up clubs. Looking at it in terms of football, Abramovich and Fulham 1997 were probably equally significant to this but arguably it's even more important to look at how Britain in general has been selling itself out for decades. The professional and finance, law, and consulting classes are gladly helping all manner of shady characters in the world - whether that be buying football clubs or purchasing multi-million dollar houses in posh neighbourhoods in London. The amount of dirty money flowing in and out of the City each day is staggering. They don't call it Laundon for no reason lol.
By n8 dogg Go To Postwho calls it laundonI think that was the nickname they use to make fun of the money laundering going on there or maybe I made it up I can’t remember

Seeing some links with Darwin Nunez. Really not sure on that. Seen a lot of football analytics Twitter saying the player he most reminds them of is a less polished Lukaku. A better athlete maybe, but has an erratic first touch and is poor at linking up with his midfielders and other runners. A lot of promising attacks die with him. He's also out performing his XG by quite a margin this season so it's not clear that he'll even be a guarantee of goals as a poacher.
But there are positives to his games. He's a good striker of the ball and his athleticism is genuinely very impressive. If ETH really wants him as his striker then clearly he feels he can improve his areas of weakness.

I'm saying there could be better ways to spend money than on young striker having his first good season. Especially when United's scouting and assessment of players has been so poor.
It's not being picky, but rather wanting to be sure that we don't fuck up another huge transfer.

By Willkiller Go To PostIsn't he a Leeds fan, but obv his Dad played for City he obviously likes themI think he probably is a bit of both. He was in City's Norwegian supporter group until 2020 when he left since he was always getting bugged about joining the club. He's gone to the Carabao Cup final before, some other games, etc.
This is getting pretty dicey for Sunderland.. but oh man, almost got on to the end of that loose ball.
