Cute read and happy Canada Day, m8s. Couldn't tell you the moment I "felt" Canadian, since I came here from a young age and grew up here and never really felt like anything else. Definitely feel like a lot of people get into something like hockey to feel Canadian, like my parents, who are incredibly into the Toronto Maple Leafs, as a kind of touchstone for the local culture. I follow the team just as closely but I don't really have that connection like they do, where their fandom is intertwined with a sense of patriotism and feeling absorbed into the local culture.
Canada itself is a relatively new country and being a settler state with people coming in all over the world, its sense of nationalism needs to be invented and is fundamentally different compared to places like Germany, France, the UK, Japan, etc. The country has been described as the first "post-national" state and I find that to be a pretty poignant description.

Came here 06 June 91, damn greatest place on planet mother fucking earth. It's wild how good we have it here but yes, the winters are a bitch, so if you got cash you can change the weather with a little Mexico, Miami or California trip here and there.
Remember going to school in Toronto, gowing up in Jane/Finch. Watching Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour, Mats Sundin and Felix Potin. Remember knowing every single stat for the Leafs like a machine, I was a huge fan until the '95 (?) lock outs. Remember staying up late watching the '92 World Series with the Blue Jays winning.
What I love the most about Canada is how welcoming it has been, and how everyone can call it their home. You want to take ownership of it, you want it to be your home.
Happy Canada Day!
PS: I remember being new to Canada, barely knowing how to say hello, and one of my school friends father picked us all up and took us to the theaters, my first movie was the Mario Brothers - I was amazed seeing the big screen lol.

I have a hard time believing Canada's that great when Canadian poster @Perfect Blue keeps posting about how great Dutch infrastructure and urban planning is

Biden has been toast for months now. He's finished, there is no path to recovery for him.
I kow the stock market is not the economy, and I know it's disconnected from real economy (especially lately) but when the stock market started to tank it was obvious to me where we were headed; high inflationary period with continued supply issues, causing further inflation with gas prices not coming down due to demand and the war.
It's always the economy. Period. When someone is paying 100$ more for gas using the same car going the same distance, well, they feel that. Not to mention house prices, groceries, etc etc.
Imagine if the democrats got their way and trillions more were dropped? It would have caused a double digit inflation environment, think what a double digit inflation would have done to the psychology of the economy. Total catastrophe... Real scary stuff tbh.
And finally, now with hiring freezes and job cuts, we're headed straight into a recession but the Feds will have us believe otherwise.
Yeah, Biden is done and dusted... And I haven't even mentioned the dozens of other shit going on at the same time.

its a combination of a lot of things not just the economy - which was headed in this direction regardless.
The job thing too is like.... where and you getting this stuff lol

The general public, on both sides, doesn’t see this at all lol
It's many things for sure but economy is king. People don't care who is in charge or what's causing it, they just know they feel poorer.
You haven't heard of any layoffs or hiring freezes? It's happening in the tech industry for sure. VCs for example aren't funding companies if said companies aren't freezing hires or cutting fat right now.

I don't know if you've realized yet, but pretty much everyone has acknowledged your regurgitation of talking points from the bottom rung of us political coverage for a while now lol
There's the coverage of certain stuff, and then there's the reality of it in relation to everything else. The tech industry thing in particular is a whole mesh of bs. That didn't just now turn into the wild west man

End of the term was already knee deep into Afghanistan AND Iraq.
Not to mention a bunch of dumb shit was already happening.
You wouldn't believe the shock from Democrats that he got reelected.

Bush's approval rating in blue. He was still riding the coattails of 9/11 by 2004.
Noone was giving him the 9/11 pass by that point cause Iraq was already going sideways and got worse in his second term
By reilo Go To PostNoone was giving him the 9/11 pass by that point cause Iraq was already going sideways and got worse in his second termHow does the Iraq war getting worse during his second term affect the 2004 election?

By reilo Go To PostIt was already bad in his first termNo I wasn't.

The Iraq war was shitty in his first term hence the plummeting approval rating. But without 9/11, his approval rating would have decreased during his first term anyway (not as severely) and by 2004, it would have been less. This is my prediction:
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe his approval rating would have been consistent the entire time
By FortuneFaded Go To PostNo I wasn't.K. Thanks for the graphs.
