By data Go To PostI got my debit card when I was 16 and to this day I'm trying to figure out why anyone ever used checks when debit cards existed.Because the checkbook when done right contains a log of your purchases and give some people a solid idea of what they're spending without having to check a website.
By i can get you a toe Go To PostHell here in the states wells fargo and other banks have even noticed who doesn't pay attention to their shit and signed people up for accounts, loans and programs they didn't even ask for. People just assume some automated payment went up and don't even call that shit out. They get their autopayment set up and don't even look at it again.dumb shit like hitting me for room and board early when my student loan cash, in the same package, hit late - just to fuck students twice
By reilo Go To PostDid that debit card even contain your own paycheck or was it a joint account with your parents?lol
some of us had distant relatives paying utilities on our name while in middle school
We used to have something called Proton, which was a debit card lite. You put some money on it ( I think max 50 β¬ ) and then you could pay with that.
It died after a few years but my grandmother loved using it because it didn't require a pin. Just slide it and OK.

By DY_nasty Go To Postwhen you've been paycheck to paycheck before, automated bill pay shenanigans and delayed check cashing has 100% fucked your life up beforeYes.
I had a kids debit card at 8-ish. It had some kind of cartoon on it. Felt like the coolest thing ever to use an ATM.
By reilo Go To PostDid that debit card even contain your own paycheck or was it a joint account with your parents?I've never had any kind of access to my parents accounts. My bank had some debit card for minors. I think it had some kind of limits on it, but I just wanted to buy stuff online, and it let me do that.
The thing that most blew my mind in the states was when I tried to pay with a credit card at a restaurant and dude had to take my card to the back of the place to pay. Confused tf out of me when he asked me for my card, like y'all didn't have those little handheld terminals that get brought to your seat? Granted this was 2013 and in Florida, but still.
Most places still take it to the back to run it
Ruby Tuesday and those kinds of chains have the table swipe thing though

handheld sets didn't really get common until like 2017 I think
they're still kinda an after thought too. "do the money shit elsewhere" is kinda preferred at dining
I see it at strip clubs and bars more than restaurants now that I think about it

Auto pay talk:
Got an added $280 on my rent this month, because for some reason the system added a month to month charge despite me never being month to month . Went down to talk to them "oh yeah that's weird, it shouldn't do that. You've never been month to month. Let me reach out to my manager"
This is why I do not auto pay

By bud Go To Posti have never written or cashed a check.I received a check per mail a couple of years ago from a class action lawsuit. I think it was for pricefixing RAM in sixth gen consoles or something. Was maybe $15 in total.
this happens in america outside of the movies?
My bank has no way to cash checks :lol

By post-sy Go To PostNot even in an app? There's not a single bank left in the Netherlands that accepts checks. I had never seen one in person up until that American check showed up in my mail. It's just not a thing.
in america, can you use your bank app to send a payment request to someone else?
probably asking a dumb question here. no bully.

Is your venmo wallet seperate from your bank account or does it directly go to your bank account when someone sends you money?
By /bacon Go To PostIs your venmo wallet seperate from your bank account or does it directly go to your bank account when someone sends you money?
ahh, that's a good one, yeah.
over here, it's deposited directly into your bank account.
venmo probably requires you to make a separate account like paypal.

By i can get you a toe Go To PostBacon confusing me, there has to be a way to deposit checks that's insanity.
most banks already stopped doing it last year.
ing stopped doing it starting from january 1st.
i had to google this because no one really uses cheques here, haha.
By i can get you a toe Go To PostBacon confusing me, there has to be a way to deposit checks that's insanity. There are roughly 40.000 US expats living in the Netherlands and overseas US citizens all received those Corona checks, three in total.
To deposit those checks you need to either do it in the US or open a bank account in Belgium and deposit it there lol.
By Pedja Go To PostSo is auto-pay just a direct debit or something else?Mine go against my credit card with the exception of my car note and credit card payments, which are paid with my checking account.
By domino Go To PostI really thought yall were playing in here not knowing about checksβ¦Right? What the hell
It's still how I get paid AND pay my rent every month. Europe is another planet
