Put a bunch of shit on autopay but also check mint every damn day. Fuck establishments that have like 3 different fuckin' names, scared myself more than once about a charge here and there.
When a payment is listed on your bank statement as something like GIBRALTAR HOLDINGS or Jersey PLC
End up instantly forgetting what I've paid for over the last month, and straining to remember what I've spent that particular amount of money on by process of elimination.

By diehard Go To PostMy parents had to "balance their checkbook". The horror.I never learned what this means
By Not Go To PostI never learned what this meansYou don't have a website to know how much money is in your account so you have to manually add and subtract checks to keep track of your balance. Spend $39 at the grocery store? Write it down. End of the month comes around you need to do some math.
By Not Go To PostGoddamnYou kinda want to make sure you have the money
I just assumed you could idk, call the bank or something
By Kibner Go To PostA promissory note.so basically an IOU note?
i've seen them in movies but never knew how they worked.
By DiPro Go To Postso basically an IOU note?Yeah, except the funds come directly from your bank account.

This is the best diagram of what one looks like in my quick searching:
If you are familiar with what a debit card is (as opposed to a credit card), it is the paper version of that.
e: when you write a check, there is a carbon copy right behind it so that you have a copy. This is useful when balancing the checkbook as it gives you a record of purchases. There is also a page in the back of the book that looks like a spreadsheet and is used to keep track of all purchases and deposits so that everything is in one spot, making it easier to spot check. That has to be done manually and is prone to error since you basically have to duplicate the information in the carbon copy.
By DiPro Go To Postyou can give these to anyone and they can get the money you write on it?Yes you could cash it at the bank it is written on or at your bank with 1-3 day processing time. You would typically have to cash it within 6 months. The saying "the cheque bounced" means not Non-Suffiecient Funds or NSF which would mean the bank will refuse to pay because the individual who wrote the cheque had insufficient funds. Fun times back in the day when that happened.
weird af but kinda cool.
My parents used to use them all the time. Main reason people used them was that the money doesn't come out of your account instantly as Lunatic says.
Also, here's a terrible kid's comedy about the so-called "blank check": https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109287/
By bud Go To Posti have never written or cashed a check. Some places only take cash or check for small purchase amounts because they don't have processing fees (or are much lower compared to credit/debit cards).
this happens in america outside of the movies?
Only time I've ever had anything to do with a cheque was when the manager at my work experience sent me to cash one in down the road.
By LabouredPatriot Go To PostSure, if by terrible you mean EXCELLENT.Loved this movie as a kid.

Only ever cashed government cheques and that was before I set up direct deposit lol.
Heard stories of people paying with cheques at grocery stores. So strange to me.

i remember being a cashier at the grocery store back in the day. in my bag, setting the store records for fastest cashier . not even looking at the scanner, but letting the sound create a rhythm. a good vibe
then you'd also have that one old person come through, pull out the check book, take forever to write it out, make sure they properly tore it from the book, and then you had to run it through the separate check machine. just killed the whole mood
the worst

The last few pages have been wild. I have absolutely everything automated here in the UK. Rent, phone, electricity, water, insurance, even my CCs. Not had an issue once in my life.
What's the actual fear for everyone who's doing it manually?

Only thing I do manually is the water bill
Do the rent directly through the bank so I don't think they can surprise us with rent increases.

-i like "seeing" and entering in the value of what i'm paying for

Old people always use checks at the grocery store. Usually you’ll see them in a checkout lane all by themselves because everyone avoids that lane.
My first mobile phone contract came with rebates in the forms of periodic cheques lol.
Anyone still use paying-in books? Ballache as a teen trying to get my money into a bank

Yeah I'm still not sure if this is just sarcasm taken way far.
I'm literally depositing 2 checks today...
By Dr Espi Go To PostOld people always use checks at the grocery store. Usually you’ll see them in a checkout lane all by themselves because everyone avoids that lane.does the store get the money instantly or do they have to hope the check doesn't bounce?
here old people all pay with cash and they have to give the exact amount which means they'll search for the right coins in their wallet for 5 minutes until the cashier gets annoyed and just dumps all the cash on the counter and counts it for them.
my grandma just hands them the wallet now and let them figure it out. still annoying but saves time.

By DiPro Go To Postnice. It was wonderful and I only wish more people were able to experience it because only eight people (four girls, four boys) each year at my college got the same deal.
They paid for housing (an apartment, not a dorm), utilities (except internet), food, tuition, and books. And also gave me some extra spending money.

Got a full scholarship for school/board/etc. Fairly easy to get in my country if you have grades above Bs and are a citizen.

Not had an issue once in my life. Before shit like Mint and mobile apps existed it was the primary main log of payment going out to utilities, maintenance, taxes, etc. It's also a hold over for some people to control exactly when payments go out since here in the US we have to pay a primo for shit like Health Insurance.

when you've been paycheck to paycheck before, automated bill pay shenanigans and delayed check cashing has 100% fucked your life up before
By DY_nasty Go To Postwhen you've been paycheck to paycheck before, automated bill pay shenanigans and delayed check cashing has 100% fucked your life up beforeAnd this was pre-consumer protection acts where overdraft fees left you in a perpetual state of negative balance.
I got my debit card when I was 16 and to this day I'm trying to figure out why anyone ever used checks when debit cards existed.
Hell here in the states wells fargo and other banks have even noticed who doesn't pay attention to their shit and signed people up for accounts, loans and programs they didn't even ask for. People just assume some automated payment went up and don't even call that shit out. They get their autopayment set up and don't even look at it again.
